Faith of Christ’ in Nineteenth-Century Pauline Scholarship
The Journal of Theological Studies, NS, Vol. 66, Pt 1, April 2015 ‘EXEGETICAL AMNESIA’ AND PISSIS VQISSOT: THE ‘FAITH OF CHRIST’ IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY PAULINE SCHOLARSHIP BENJAMIN SCHLIESSER University of Zurich [email protected] Abstract Contemporary scholarship holds, almost unanimously, that Johannes Haußleiter was the first to suggest that Paul’s expression p0sti" Vristou~ should be interpreted as the ‘faith(fulness) of Christ’. His article of 1891 is said to have initiated the ongoing debate, now more current than ever. Such an assessment of the controversy’s origins, however, cannot be main- tained. Beginning already in the 1820s a surprisingly rich and nuanced discussion of the ambivalent Pauline phrase can be seen. Then, a number of scholars from rather different theological camps already con- sidered and favoured the subjective genitive. The present study seeks to recover the semantic, grammatical, syntactical, and theological aspects put forward in this past (and ‘lost’) exegetical literature. Such retrospection, while not weighing the pros and cons for the subjective or the objective interpretation, helps put into perspective the arguments and responses in the present debate. Then and now, scholars’ contextualization of their readings is in keeping with their respective diverse theological and philo- sophical frames of reference. I. Presidential Address 1904-1984, Karl Rahner, Theologian
PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS 1904-1984, KARL RAHNER, THEOLOGIAN During this past winter as I began remote preparations for my talk I read all the presidential addresses since the first. Although our society was conceived in Washington in 1945 and came to birth in New York in 1946, the first formal presidential address did not occur until 1953 at the eighth meeting when Monsignor John Fearns of Dunwoodie spoke of the theological productivity of Pope Pius XII. A presidential address does not then pertain to the esse of our Society, some might say not even to its bene esse. The addresses differed notably in length from seven pages to thirty-five, the longest that of Lawrence J. Riley prepared for 1960, a text that would have taken him two hours to deliver. Their literary genres varied considerably: a position paper on a subject dear to the president's heart; a report on the progress and future of the Society; or a comment on the state of theology. At least three of the presidents went on to become bishops, though I doubt that their addresses contributed much to that honor. At first my plan was to compare Catholic theology in the years 1904 and 1984, since 1904 was the year of birth for John Courtney Murray, Yves Congar, Bernard Lonergan, and Karl Rahner. I began reading what various theological journals were publishing that year. As the weeks advanced and my research progressed, I paused on March 5 to commemorate the eightieth birthday of Karl Rahner. When I heard the news from Innsbruck that Rahner had passed into eternal life on March 30, I decided then to devote this address to his life and work. -

SCRIPTURE AND THE CHRISTIAN ETHIC Within the scope of this convention, called as it is to consider the question "Is there a Catholic theology?" it is imperative that we ethi- cists and moral theologians raise the question "Is there a Catholic moral theology?" A general response to this question will be the subject of Charles Curran's communication to this convention tomorrow. Conse- quently I have chosen to restrict the scope of my presentation to a consideration of a narrower issue, namely that of the use of the Scrip- tures in the formulation of a Catholic and/or Christian ethic. The question that lies before us for our general consideration is, in fact, a double question. On the one hand, we might well ask, "Is there a Catholic moral theology?" and thereby raise the issue of pluralism In moral theology. On the other hand, we can ask "Is there a Catholic moral theology?" and thereby inquire whether or not there is a specifi- cally religious (i.e. Catholic or Christian) dimension which can be brought to bear upon ethical questions. It is obvious to all of us that there is a factual pluralism in Catholic moral theology.1 There is not now nor has there ever been a single Catholic moral theology. Not even during those centuries when natural law methodology was enjoying its heyday nor during those more recent times when Catholic moral think- ing was largely influenced by magisterial statements and the formula- tions of Canon Law was there a single Catholic answer to any but the most obvious ethical questions, and even then we were confronted by more moderate opinions, pastoral judgments, the limitation of human freedom, and the subjectivity of the human conscience as the consensus opinion was brought to bear upon a specific case. -
Im Spiegel Der Zeit
IM SPIEGEL DER ZEIT Theologie als Zeugnis Weg und Vermächtnis Heinrich Schliers Am 26. Dezember 1978 ist in Bonn Heinrich Schlier gestorben. Auf dem Toten- gedenken ist ein kurzer Text abgedruckt, den der Verstorbene wohl selbst verfaßt hat und in dem er Einblick gewährt in sein letztes Selbstverständnis - es enthül- lend und verhüllend zugleich. Der Text trägt die Überschrift •Was ich bin". Die Antwort erfolgt in vier Strophen. Die ersten drei enthalten das Eingeständnis des Fragmentarischen, das jedes menschliche Leben und in einer sehr bestimmten Weise auch das Leben dessen, der sich da eröffnet, bestimmt und begrenzt. Sie sprechen freilich auch von dem Licht der Hoffnung, das der Glaube in dieses Leben hineingetragen hat. Die drei Strophen haben den Wortlaut: Ich bin nicht ein Gläubiger, aber ich möchte es sein, damit die liebliche, fruchtbare Wahrheit sich öffne. Ich bin nicht ein Priester, aber ich trage Leid um vieles, ich trage viele - im Leid. Ich bin nicht ein Heiliger, aber ich möchte es sein. Wenn nur das Kreuz nicht wäre! Doch wo ist Heiligkeit, wenn nicht in ihm? Eine vierte Strophe schließt sich an. Sie setzt mit der jetzt in Frageform gefaßten Wiederholung der Überschrift ein, also: Was bin ich? Offensichtlich ist mit dem bis dahin Gesagten das Entscheidende noch nicht ausge- sprochen worden. Dies nun erscheint in zwei knappen antwortenden Sätzen: Gott sieht mich. Ich bin sein Augenblick. Der so spricht, weiß im Glauben, daß das Geheimnis seines Lebens bei Gott ver- borgen und geborgen ist. Im Spiegel der Zeit 61 Diese Letztaussagen bleiben zurückbezogen auf einen konkreten Lebensweg. Was diesen im einzelnen und in seiner Vielfalt ausmachte, ist wohl nur den unmit- telbaren Weggenossen Heinrich Schliers bekannt. -

1 Erik Peterson's concept of eschatology Alf Christophersen, Munich Especially during the Weimar Republic Erik Peterson (1890-1960) was one of the most influential Theologians. Based on a short introduction into Peterson’s turbulent biography (he converted from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism in 1930) and an integration into the exegetical discussion of his time the paper presents Peterson’s commentary on the Epistle to the Romans (published in 1997) – with a focus on Peterson’s differentiated concept of eschatology. I. In 1891 already, as the thirteenth point in his doctoral thesis, Ernst Troeltsch stated: “as far as it is recommendable under any circumstances to systemize the Christian beliefs, eschatology must be the centre of all relationships.”1 In his programmatic essay “The Beginnings of Christian Theology,” the Tübingen New Testament scholar Ernst Käsemann spoke of apocalyptic as the “mother of all Christian theology.”2 He found the centre of original Christian apocalyptic relating to John’s Revelation and the synoptic gospels, in “the accession to the throne of heaven by God and by his Christ as the eschatological Son of Man - an event which can also be characterized as proof of the righteousness of God.”3 The central motif of post-Easter apocalyptic is not the teaching of retribution but “the hope of the manifestation of the Son of Man on his way to his enthronement.”4 Käsemann, in his characterisation of the rank of apocalyptic, focused on a decidedly historical theology, and in this context, he proposed “that it was apocalyptic which first made historical thinking possible within Christendom.”5 Historical thinking, based on the foundation of canonical and extra-canonical scriptures, he claimed, was the prerequisite for theology. -

Biblical Studies THESE THINGS ARE WRITTEN. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE RELIGIOUS IDEAS OF THE BIBLE. By James M. Efird. John Knox Press, Abanta, 1978. 169 pages. Paper. $4.95. James Efird, who is currently Associate Professor of Biblical Languages and Interpretation at Duke Divinity School, has endeavored to meet the needs of academic and religous communities to furnish an introduction to the religious thought of the Bible. The former Director of Academic Affairs presents for the reader the fruits of his scholarship to enlighten current and historical issues in modem Biblical studies. The presuppositions which underly this volume are those of the various forms of the historical-critical method. The entire literature, as well as the views of con- servative Biblical scholarship, is ignored. Efird especially considers the chronological development of the religious ideas of the Bible. Thus he covers the Pentateuch, the development of the Old Testament, the conquest and the king- dom, the prophets, and the post-exilic period. Then Efird focuses on the New Testament, its background as well as the rise of the apocalyptic writings. Bibliu- graphies are given at the end of each chapter to encourage further study. With few exceptions all books suggested for further reading advocate the historical- critical approach to Scripture and even the few he recommends (Bruce and Ladd) have made concessions to a negative form of higher criticism. -

PRESENTATION CHRISTIAN CONVICTION AND CULTURAL ACCOMODATION North Carolina Council of Churches Greensboro, North Carolina February 21, 2011 THE BARMEN DECLARATION (by Bob Osborn) The Barmen Declaration The Declaration was published in May, 1934, by the Confessing Synod of the German Evvangelical (Protestant) church that is, the Reformed, Lutheran and United churches, meeting in the Reformed church of Barmen. The occasion was a critical, threatening division of the church brought about by the German Christian faction within the church. It was drafted by a theological committee appointed by the churches. It consisted of two Lutheran pastors, a Lutheran professor and one Reformed professor, Swiss Professor Karl Barth, of Bonn University. During the nap time of the committee meeting, after lunch, when the others were sleeping, Karl Barth drafted the Declaration. In most respects it is a fine statement of Barth=s theology. At the same time, it brings together concerns of both the Reformed and Lutheran churches, but above all it addresses the problems posed by the German Christians that were threatening the church. In effect it sets forth a doctrine of the church. It has been adopted by Reformed churches throughout the world as a confession of their faith. Lutherans, on the other hand who really acknowledge only one confession, the Augsburg Confession, regarded it as a Declaration of the Confessing Church only for the particular time that it was drafted, that is during the Nazi era. It should be noticed that it did not directly address the political situation, that is Nazism. It spoke to the reality of the of the day only indirectly as it spoke to the church. -

Jarausch) In the decades following World War II, German Protestants worked to transform their religious tradition. While this tradition had been previously characterized by rigidly hierarchical institutional structures, strong nationalist leanings, and authoritarian political tendencies, the experiences of dictatorship and defeat caused many Protestants to question their earlier beliefs. Motivated by the desire to overcome the burden of the Nazi past and by the opportunity to play a major role in postwar rebuilding efforts, several groups within the churches worked to reform Protestant social and political attitudes. As a result of their efforts, the churches came to play an important role in the ultimate success and stability of West German democracy. This study examines this transformation at the meetings of the German Protestant Kirchentag, one of the largest and most diverse postwar gatherings of Protestant laity. After situating the Kirchentag within the theological and political debates of the immediate postwar years, it focuses on changing understandings of the role of the church in society, the pluralization of Protestant political attitudes, and the shift from national to international self-understandings within the churches.
