Memorial Day

May 25

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY ACTIVITY?

Augusta County Parks and Recreation has every intention for all offered activities to take place, especially considering the time investment that staff has made in planning. Unfortunately, sometimes excellent offerings have to be canceled because participants wait until the last minute to register. Each activity needs a minimum number of participants in order to run. So if an activity looks interesting or fun, don’t hesitate — register today!

CANCELLATION HOTLINE

You can get the most recent and up to date activity cancellations, postponements and scheduled make-ups due 540-245-5727 | www.augustarec.com to uncooperative weather conditions and forecast by calling 540-294-4219.

REGISTRATION

Participants must register before the start of all programs; you are not considered registered for a program unless payment is made in full. Augusta County Parks and Recreation’s programs have a minimum and maximum number of participants. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first paid basis until a program is full. Once a program is full, ACPR may take names for a waiting list but does not guarantee anyone on a waiting list acceptance into a program. ACPR reserves the right to cancel a program due to lack of enrollment. In such a case, enrollees will be promptly notified of the cancellation. You may register online, by mail, by phone, or in person at our office.

PAYMENT

Payment in full is due at the time of registration, unless the specific activity/trip/program description outlines an otherwise approved payment schedule that includes an initial deposit. You may pay by check, cash, Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Please do not send cash with mail in registrations. All checks and money orders are payable to Augusta County Parks and Recreation or ACPR. A $30 return check fee is charged for all returned checks.

ONLINE REGISTRATION TIPS

You may register for our programs online using WebTrac. Go to www.augustarec.com and click on “Online Registration”. This will take you to our online registration system.

Once you get to WebTrac follow these steps:

REFUNDS & CANCELLATIONS

Full refunds will be given if Augusta County Parks and Recreation cancels a class, program, trip, etc. With any registration cancellation, a $10 cancellation fee will be retained (or the full fee if less than $10).

For activity and class programs (non-trips), refunds will be given up until 5 business days prior to when a program begins, minus the $10 cancellation fee. If pre-purchases have been made, these costs will also be deducted from the refund. No refunds will be approved after this date unless special circumstances warrant.

For all trip programs, no refunds will be given, unless your space on the trip can be filled. If a waiting list exists, ACPR will contact those on the waiting list to try to fill the space(s). If no waiting list exists OR those on the waiting list no longer want to participate in the trip, it will be the responsibility of the participant to resell their space(s) on the trip. In many cases, the department must make pre-purchases; therefore, this refund policy is not flexible. Note that the $10 cancellation fee will apply, even if the space is filled.

Refund checks will be mailed within 2-4 weeks for transactions made by check or cash. Refunds will be applied to credit cards for transactions made by credit card. If there is an existing household balance due for other programs/activities, the refund will be directly applied as a credit to that balance. Refund requests must be submitted on the Refund Appeal Form available from our office or on our website. Please mail completed Refund Appeal Form to Augusta County Parks and Recreation at P.O. Box 590, Verona VA 24482, fax to (540)245- 5732 or email to [email protected]. Refund Appeal Form must be received in our office within 10 business days of the initial inquiry in order to be considered.

36 Augusta County Parks & Recreation | Spring 2020 www.augustarec.com | 540-245-5727 37 AUGUSTA COUNTY FIRE & RESCUE OUTDOOR SAFETY

Ready for some outdoor exercise and adventure? Here are a few pointers. • Winter’s inactive muscles can take only so much strain. Don’t overdo it — build up slowly so you don’t have strains that can put you out of commission for some time. • It may look appealing, but don’t wander on frozen rivers and lakes in the spring. The ice is beginning to thaw, and you never know just how thin the ice really is. • Spring’s extra rain and thawing snow can cause normally safe rivers, streams, and creeks to turn treacherous. Even standing on banks can be risky as they can be undercut by rushing water and give in under your weight. • Springtime is also severe weather time. If the skies look threatening, check to see if a storm watch or warning has been issued before you initiate outdoor activities. If you’re already outside and thunderstorms threaten, go immediately into a building or enclosed vehicle. For tornadoes, go to the nearest safe structure, or the basement or interior first- floor room of your home. If there’s no time to follow these precautions, take cover in a

540-245-5600 | www.AugustaCountyVA.gov ditch or depression in the ground. • Ready to do some home repairs? On average, about 145,000 people visit the emergency room each year, because of ladder mishaps. • It’s also a great time to replace your smoke detector batteries, make sure your fire extin- guishers are placed in proper locations around your home, and ensure you have a work- ing flashlight and battery-powered radio for spring storms. By taking the right precautions when warmer weather beckons, you and those around you can enjoy a safer, healthier spring.
