Bell 36 m o u n t a i n d i s c o v e r i e s The Cyclopean Towers The natural chimneys have aroused imaginations for two centuries. Artists, poets and gentlemen of the romantic era have added to the strangeness of this natural wonder by giving the chimneys poetic names like “Vulcan’s Forge” or by likening them to Greek and medieval architecture. For a time the name “Cyclopean Towers” was applied to the chimneys, but this was later dropped in favor of “Natural Chimneys,” which was in common local usage. Natural Chimneys is a natural rock structure and park located near Mt. Solon in Augusta County, Virginia. The rock “chimneys” formed from limestone that began to accumulate and harden into stone about 500 million years ago in the Paleozoic Era when the region was under water. Over time, enormous upward pressures of magma and widespread geologic upheaval, which created the Appala- chian Mountains, combined with erosive forces of water and destroyed weaker layers of stone. Eventually, this created the seven Natural Chimneys that tower as much as 120 feet above the pastoral terrain of the Shenandoah Valley, offering onlookers a sight unrivaled in majesty. Viewed from one angle, the formations resemble enormous chimneys stand- ing in bleak contrast to the greenery of the Valley.

    The 2002 Virginia Outdoors Plan Region 6: Central Shenandoah Planning District The Central Shenandoah Planning District was named for its geographic location in the heart of Virginia’s famous Shenandoah Valley. The district comprises Augusta, Bath, Highland, Rockbridge and Rockingham counties; the cities of Buena Vista, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton and Waynesboro; and the towns of Bridgewater, Broadway, Craigsville, Dayton, Elkton, Glasgow, Goshen, Grottoes, Monterey, Mount Crawford and Timberville. According to the 2000 Census, more than 258,750 people live in the region. For the district, this represents about a 15% increase from the 1990 census numbers. The Central Shenandoah Planning District has a total area of approximately 3,437 square miles. The Blue Ridge Mountains form the eastern boundary and the Allegheny range lies along the western part of the region. Nestled between these mountains, Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley contains beautiful and diverse landscapes of fertile farmland, rolling fields and forests. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River flows through the valley, creating one of the premier fisheries in the state, while providing opportunities for swimming, canoeing and camping. Many of the headwater streams that form the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River originate in Augusta and Highland counties. To the south, the James River cuts through the corner of Rockbridge County. Numerous streams in Augusta, Highland and Bath counties form the headwater sections of the James River system. A variety of natural and recreational resources are present in the region. Federal holdings total more than 618,170 acres, and include the Shenandoah National Park and George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
