Nestled in the heart of Virginia’s famed , historic Staunton is a revitalization success story. Its dynamic downtown features a special blend of small-town hospitality and big-city amenities. The city boasts nationally recognized performing arts venues, historic attractions and a lively grassroots music scene. Hundreds of restored Victorian-era buildings house an eclectic mix of independently owned shops and restaurants.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation touts Staunton’s “dynamic downtown, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, and strong commitment to historic preservation and revitalization.” The walkable city boasts six historic districts. Staunton is ideally located for quick and easy excursions to nearby areas that show- case the best of Virginia’s natural resources and attractions, such as the , Natural Bridge, and Civil War battlefi elds.

Staunton is one of the oldest cities west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 1732, Scots-Irish settler John Lewis and his family became the fi rst Europeans to settle in the area, and a Courthouse for Augusta County was built here in 1745. Lots and streets were laid out in 1747 for the town of Staunton (pronounced STAN-ton), named after Lady Rebecca Staunton, the wife of Colonial Governor William Gooch. Strategically located at the intersection of the Great Wagon Road and early roads to the west, Staunton developed as a major center for trade. This was greatly enhanced with the arrival in 1854 of the Virginia Central Railroad. This railroad would later play a key role during the Civil War when the Shenandoah Valley served as the “Breadbasket of the Confederacy.” Because Staunton remained largely unscathed during the Civil War, it retains one of Virginia’s fi nest collections of authentic 19th century architecture.

Plan for a leisurely shopping excursion downtown, which is lined with hundreds of Victorian buildings. Appealing storefronts house specialty shops, bookstores, art galleries, restaurants and performance venues. Almost all the stores in downtown are independently owned. Gift shops, home accessory stores and art galleries form the backbone of downtown, while antique stores, specialty food shops and clothing boutiques offer fabulous fi nds. Downtown also offers wellness options like salons, spas and yoga studios as well as more traditional offerings like outdoor outfi tters and bike shops. PETER AASLESTAD Children will delight in some of the region’s fi nest toy and hobby shops, especially if you cap off their shopping adventure with a treat from a homemade ice cream shop. Parents can recharge with an espresso from any of our corner coffee shops. Downtown parking is readily available with a mix of street, garage and surface parking lots. For those exploring outside the historic district, the city offers a myriad of larger retailers to meet all your shopping needs. PETER AASLESTAD JEAN BOYD
