Baseball Game Fun! Did you know that the game of baseball can be traced back to the American Revolution (1775-1783)? According to History.com, a game that resembled baseball is said to have been developed from two English games, both which involved the use of a bat and a ball: 1. Rounders (a children’s game brought to New England by the colonists); and 2. another popular game—Cricket. During the American Revolution, there were different versions of these games played in schoolyards and college campuses all over the country. In 1845, more than 170 years ago, the New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club was founded. One of its members, Alexander Joy Cartwright, created a set of rules that were the foundation for the baseball played today! He decided upon a diamond-shaped infield, foul lines, and the three-strike rule. In addition, Cartwright got rid of the dangerous practice of tagging runners by throwing baseballs at them (Ouch!). By 1846, the Knickerbockers played their first official game, and baseball became an official sport, unique to America. And then, in 1943, the All-American Girls Baseball League (AAGBL) was created, and in nine years, more than 600 women played in the league. Within the first five years, the number of spectators in attendance at games was over 900,000! One of the most noteworthy teams in the AAGBL was the Rockford Peaches of Illinois. They were one of two teams to play in every AAGBL season, and they won the league championship in 1945, 1948, 1949 and 1950. Throughout this time, Dorothy Kamenshek, Lois Florreich, Dorothy Harrell, Carolyn Morris, Alice Pollitt, Ruth Richard, Rose Gacioch, Eleanor Callow, and Joan Berger were all named to All-Star teams.

THE NEW “OLD COUNTRY” THE KINGDOM OF YUGOSLAVIA AND THE CREATION OF A YUGOSLAV DIASPORA 1914-1951 BY ETHAN LARSON DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Maria Todorova, Chair Professor Peter Fritzsche Professor Diane Koenker Professor Ulf Brunnbauer, University of Regensburg ABSTRACT This dissertation reviews the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s attempt to instill “Yugoslav” national consciousness in its overseas population of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, as well as resistance to that same project, collectively referred to as a “Yugoslav diaspora.” Diaspora is treated as constructed phenomenon based on a transnational network between individuals and organizations, both emigrant and otherwise. In examining Yugoslav overseas nation-building, this dissertation is interested in the mechanics of diasporic networks—what catalyzes their formation, what are the roles of international organizations, and how are they influenced by the political context in the host country. The life of Louis Adamic, who was a central figure within this emerging network, provides a framework for this monograph, which begins with his arrival in the United States in 1914 and ends with his death in 1951. Each chapter spans roughly five to ten years. Chapter One (1914-1924) deals with the initial encounter between Yugoslav diplomats and emigrants. Chapter Two (1924-1929) covers the beginnings of Yugoslav overseas nation-building. Chapter Three (1929-1934) covers Yugoslavia’s shift into a royal dictatorship and the corresponding effect on its emigration policy.

Pray Ball? Reflections on the Serious Liturgical Challenge of Giving Thanks for Baseball By Mark W. Stamm, Associate Professor of Christian Worship, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University Twenty-Second Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture June 2-4, 2010 (The Scripture quotations contained herein are from the New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright © 1989, Division of Christian Education of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. Used by permission. All rights reserved.) I present this paper as liturgical scholar, ordained United Methodist minister, and baseball fan. I hold membership in the North American Academy of Liturgy and the North Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, as well as the Society for American Baseball Research. Can these distinct realms of discourse and practice have a helpful conversation, or must they remain separate? Committed practitioners have lived both realities, of course, and it takes but little effort to start a baseball conversation in any of these realms. When I began studies in the Boston University Doctor of Theology degree program in 1989, I was informed that clergy could obtain a pass to Fenway Park that would allow one to sit in any unoccupied seat; that is, when one could find an empty seat in the years following the Impossible Dream, Fisk’s homer, and the ball that dribbled under Buckner’s glove.1 More than that, my wife is an equally ardent baseball fan as well as the best scorekeeper in the family, so a pass for one ticket would have been a problem.
