JANE BABITTS and TOBY FAGENSON enjoyed a trip to Italy in August. The weather was very hot, but the trip was marvelous. January is an eventful month for CLARICE KJERULFF’s family. Her niece, LISA, will be graduated from N.Y.U. film school. Another niece, MEI LING (Lisa’s sister), will be married in Melbourne, Florida. The ceremony will be held on the beach. Clarice will fly to Florida for the occasion accompanied by JERRY EPSTEIN. Then, in Febru- ary, Clarice will be off on a business trip to . Congratulations, Lisa and Mei Ling and bon voyage, Clarice and Jerry. HARVEY CORT and I are getting to know Harvey’s newest grandchild. MEREDITH FAY CORT was born on September 10th; her proud parents are JULIE and DANIEL CORT. Meredith has definite musical preferences. She likes it when I sing one par- ticular song to her, but cries if I switch to a different song. SHEILA EWALL enjoyed herself at a cousin’s bat mitzvah celebration in November. A happy, healthy, prosperous and musical 2007 to everyone! If you have news to share, please contact me at 372 Central Park West, #15B, New York, NY 10025; 212-663-6309.

Fall Weekend 2006 Report It was a first for FMSNY. The Society held its Fall Weekend not at a camp, but at a hotel. No beds to make or strip. Private baths. Menus with choices! There was no reason to go outside except to see the beautiful Catskill scenery. Inside there was music—marvelous music. The featured performers were Dick Swain, master of Pennsylvania songs and Philadelphia history, Dick and Carmen Gilman, married 48 years, with a song and story for each one of them, and Mary Flower, guitar player extraordinaire. The featured performers were complemented by the ex- cellent workshops presented by our club members: Anne Price and Steve Suffet pre- sented labor songs, Takako Nagumo introduced us to Japanese children’s songs with context, Sol Weber contributed sentimental songs, Evy Mayer and Jean Farnworth sang songs accompanied by harp and ukulele, Harry Baya led gospel songs on (when else?) Sunday morning. In addition, Mary Flower led a finger-picking workshop, Dick led the perennial dance band in their practice session to prepare for the Saturday night square dance, called by Dick and Carmen. Dick Swain held a workshop on Pennsylvania songs. David Kleiman showed two episodes from Pete Seeger’s Rainbow Quest, The Stanley Brothers and the Clinch Mountain Boys with the inimitable Cousin Emmy playing the banjo (in spike heels!) as well as her mouth and a rubber glove, Quite a sight—and sound—that rubber-glove solo. Also in that episode, there is a Doc Watson who seems impossibly young. On Sunday morning, he showed Roscoe Holcomb; the DVD also has Johnny Cash and Jean Redpath. Pinewoods weekends would not be complete without the camper concert. This one had so many of us signed up that there wasn’t time for all of us—they had to exclude the people who were giving workshops! However, even without them, the room was full of happy performers, from Millicent Brown’s piece on the pleasures of teaching English Continued on page 8 - 6 - Folk Music Society of New York, Inc. / New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club Presents Jeff Warner Friday 12 January 2007, 7:30 p.m.

At the Community Church 40 E. 35 St between Park & Madison, Manhattan. Hear the latest news from the distant past, as Jeff Warner takes you on a musical trip through North Carolina, the lumber camps of the Adirondacks, or the whaling ports of New England. Accompanying himself on guitar, banjo, or concertina or singing a cappella, Jeff shares his delight in the old songs with humor and charm. Audiences around the world have enjoyed his rollicking performances. Bring your friends and family and be prepared to sing along.

- 7 - Fall Weekend 2006 Report Continued from page 6 as a Second Language to Barbara Hoffman’s wonderful war protest song to the tradi- tional harmonies of the No Name Yet Gospel Choir. Marvelous as the planned entertainment was (and it was), the unplanned jams were spectacular. There were at least five places for informal jamming. I don’t know how long they lasted—I staggered off to my room after 1 AM each night and the groups I was listening to were still going strong. As Jean Farnworth said, happily, “This music is like a warm blanket surrounding me.” Memories of that blanket of sound will keep me warm until the Winter Weekend! —Jean Halpern
