M. C. A. (Young Men's Christian Association), the A. S. C. R. (the Christian Student Association, Romania) and the U. N. S. C. R. (Christian Students’ National Union of Romania); it is a period marked by growing tensions among members of the U. N. S. C. R., the radicalization of the relationships among young people from various Christian national student movements, who will gradually discover irreconcilable incompatibilities. The sources of documentation are national archives and the press of those times. Alexandru Teodorescu (alias Sandu Tudor), the central figure of this paper, also fits in the picture of a generation engaged in the chase to discover the eschatological dimension of their time. The fractures between the two organizations stemming from ideas (the differences between the Christian dogmas promoted by the Y. M. C. A and the orthodox church) and social context (a distinct response to radicalized student movements) are also reflected in the evolution of Sandu Tudor’s perception of the relationships among the A. Between Denial and "Comparative Trivialization": Holocaust Negationism in Post-Communist East Central Europe Michael Shafir Motto: They used to pour millet on graves or poppy seeds To feed the dead who would come disguised as birds. I put this book here for you, who once lived So that you should visit us no more Czeslaw Milosz Introduction* Holocaust denial in post-Communist East Central Europe is a fact. And, like most facts, its shades are many. Sometimes, denial comes in explicit forms – visible and universally-aggressive. At other times, however, it is implicit rather than explicit, particularistic rather than universal, defensive rather than aggressive. And between these two poles, the spectrum is large enough to allow for a large variety of forms, some of which may escape the eye of all but the most versatile connoisseurs of country-specific history, culture, or immediate political environment. In other words, Holocaust denial in the region ranges from sheer emulation of negationism elsewhere in the world to regional-specific forms of collective defense of national "historic memory" and to merely banal, indeed sometime cynical, attempts at the utilitarian exploitation of an immediate political context.1 The paradox of Holocaust negation in East Central Europe is that, alas, this is neither "good" nor "bad" for the Jews.2 But it is an important part of the * I would like to acknowledge the support of the J. and O. To that end, I will examine civil society invigoration by assessing the effect of interest organisations on policy-making at the governmental level, and the internal democracy of civil society organisations. The key claim is that despite previously diverging communist structures in Hungary, Poland and Romania, there is a convergence among these three countries in the aftermath of their transition to democracy as related to the invigoration of civil society. This claim rests on two empirical observations and one theoretical argument: (1) elitism is widely embedded in political and civil spheres; (2) patron-client forms of relationship between the state and the civil society organisations weaken the institutionalisation of policy-making. As a result, there is a gap between the general and specific aspects of institutionalisation of democracy at the levels of both the political system and civil society. The theoretical argument is that the country-specific historical legacies from the communist period have only a secondary impact on the invigoration of civil society in the period of democratic consolidation. -

While living in exile, they form or join new communities. They also work to determine their role and relation to their host and home countries. This study focuses on the activities and culture of Romanian exiles in the West from 1974 to 1988. These were the years that the United States granted Most- Favored-Nation status to Nicolae Ceaușescu’s Romania. During this time, American foreign policy ranged from détente to differentiation. The culture of Romanian exiles during the Cold War developed into working to combat communism and lessen Romanian suffering, as well as serving as the voice of and preserving democratic Romania. Exiles never gave up hope that communism could be overthrown. When it became evident that their political activities could not achieve regime change, a group of Romanian exiles decided to diversify their goals. This included focusing on humanitarian aid and preserving Romanian democratic traditions. They allied with the neoconservative wing of the U.S. Congress that originated in the Democratic Party to focus more on humanitarian victories, raise awareness in the West of what they considered to be the truth about Romania, and find means to provide a threat to or weaken Ceaușescu. -

The parish priest there was Teodor Popescu. The Stork’s Nest had been his father-in-law’s church and Popescu became parish priest after the latter’s death. His sermons attracted large numbers of people who flocked to hear him preach. Popescu’s preaching emphasized the urgency of personal conversion and the idea of justification by faith. Popescu’s pamphlet How to Bring Souls to Christ (1924) explained that human suffering is a result of sin’s impact on the world, and that every one of his readers was a sinner. But sinners need not despair, he wrote, because Jesus Christ died for our sins. ‘And so the question is: how will you face the end? Saved or unsaved? Regardless, the Saviour could come again today or tomorrow. Find out. He asks nothing of you except to believe and you’ll be saved through grace.’1 Few other Orthodox preachers of the day talked about a one-time conversion in this way and few insisted that people decide to follow Jesus lest an unexpected death might send them to hell. -

-ARSENIE BOCA- Este considerat de mulţi credincioşi drept „ultimul sfânt al românilor“. Duhovnicul Arsenie Boca şi-a dus viaţa printre fapte considerate miracole de cei care le-au văzut şi vorbe cu tâlc, balansându-se între renumele profetic şi durerile simţite în temniţele comuniste. „Într-o zi, oamenii i s-au plâns: «Părinte, nu mai avem nisip de construcţie, ce ne facem? Numa dacă s-ar abate râul ăsta din loc, am mai putea găsi ceva nisip...». Părintele s-a dus în deal, pe apă, la vreo douăzeci de metri, şi s-a lăsat în genunchi. A făcut rugăciunea câteva ore. Şi, vă jur!, asta am văzut-o cu ochii mei, spre seară, apa a intrat în pământ şi a ieşit puţin mai încolo, lăsând la suprafaţă un nisip fin, strălucitor ca argintul. Muncitorii s-au închinat cu toţii, speriaţi, nevenindu-le să-şi creadă ochilor. «Rugaţi-vă, postiţi şi veţi putea şi voi!», le- a spus tuturor.“ Astfel de istorii, precum cea spusă de muncitorii care lucraseră la refacerea mănăstirii din localitate, puteau fi auzite, la Prislop, pe 28 noiembrie 1989. Atunci, toţi cei prezenţi acolo, proveniţi din toate zonele ţării, înfriguraţi de la vremea de afară şi extenuaţi de lipsurile unui regim politic ce mai avea de supravieţuit mai puţin de o lună, participau la ceva mai mult decât o înmormântare. Senzaţia era că România a pierdut un sfânt, o persoană în relaţie directă cu divinul, un făcător de minuni. Din sicriu, trupul lui Arsenie Boca trăda perioadele lungi de interogatorii, anchete şi întemniţări, al căror subiect fusese încă din anii 1950.
