The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to public benefit guidance published by the Charities Commission in determining the activities undertaken by the Society. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting polices set out in note 1 to the accounts and comply with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102)). Objectives and Activities Founded in the United Kingdom in 1866, it is the world’s oldest and most respected aeronautical society. The principal objectives of the Society as set out in its Charter of Incorporation granted by letter patent of His Majesty The King George VI in 1949 are “the general advancement of Aeronautical Art, Science and Engineering and more particularly promoting that species of knowledge which distinguishes the profession of Aeronautics.” The Society strives to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in all aerospace disciplines and, as such, the qualifications endowed by the Society are internationally recognised as a professional hallmark. As a learned body, it runs an extensive conference and lecture programme which is available to the public. -

From Oak Leaves, Part 3, Summer 2002 - published by Oakwood and District Historical Society [ODHS] EARLY BIRDS OVER YORKSHIRE © By Hilary Dyson 'Entrance to Olympia Works in 1915' Very soon, in 2003, we will be celebrating 100 years of powered flight and many memories of previous flyers and their bravery in taking off into space will be recalled. The story of flying in Yorkshire might be said to have started back in the 18th century. A certain gentleman called George Cayley who lived near Scarborough took an interest in many things one of which was flying. Cayley (1773-1857) had a technical education in London and on his return to his Brompton home he set up a workshop in which he eventually produced a 5ft glider in 1804. He then spent some five years developing a prototype manual glider with 200 sq ft of wingspan. But it was to be many years later that he felt ready to test it out. The test flight didn't take place till 1848. Even then he did not risk his own life he persuaded a young boy, his name was not recorded, who was launched into the air in a series of hops over a few yards. Cayley was to be 80 years old when he tried again with the help this time of his coachman. The coachman called John Appleby was not keen to change his occupation. But Cayley was elated however when a very short flight of about 500 yards was achieved. The coachman, no doubt worried that he might be asked for a repeat performance, gave in his notice, saying that he had been hired to drive a coach not to be catapulted into the air. -

Journal of Aeronautical History Paper 2021/03 Pearcey, Newby, and the Vulcan S C Liddle Vulcan to the Sky Trust ABSTRACT In 1955 flight testing of the prototype Avro Vulcan showed that the aircraft’s buffet boundary was unacceptably close to the design cruise condition. The Vulcan’s status as one of the two definitive carrier aircraft for Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent meant that a strong connection existed between the manufacturer and appropriate governmental research institutions, in this case the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). A solution was rapidly implemented using an extended and drooped wing leading edge, designed and high-speed wind-tunnel tested by K W Newby of RAE, subsequently being fitted to the scaled test version of the Vulcan, the Avro 707A. Newby’s aerodynamic solution exploited a leading edge supersonic-expansion, isentropic compression* effect that was being investigated at the time by researchers at NPL, including H H Pearcey. The latter would come to be associated with this ‘peaky’ pressure distribution and would later credit the Vulcan implementation as a key validation of the concept, which would soon after be used to improve the cruise efficiency of early British jet transports such as the Trident, VC10, and BAC 1-11. In turn, these concepts were exploited further in the Hawker-Siddeley design for the A300B, ultimately the basis of Britain’s status as the centre of excellence for wing design in Airbus.
