Journal of Aeronautical History Paper 2021/03 Pearcey, Newby, and the Vulcan S C Liddle Vulcan to the Sky Trust ABSTRACT In 1955 flight testing of the prototype Avro Vulcan showed that the aircraft’s buffet boundary was unacceptably close to the design cruise condition. The Vulcan’s status as one of the two definitive carrier aircraft for Britain’s independent nuclear deterrent meant that a strong connection existed between the manufacturer and appropriate governmental research institutions, in this case the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). A solution was rapidly implemented using an extended and drooped wing leading edge, designed and high-speed wind-tunnel tested by K W Newby of RAE, subsequently being fitted to the scaled test version of the Vulcan, the Avro 707A. Newby’s aerodynamic solution exploited a leading edge supersonic-expansion, isentropic compression* effect that was being investigated at the time by researchers at NPL, including H H Pearcey. The latter would come to be associated with this ‘peaky’ pressure distribution and would later credit the Vulcan implementation as a key validation of the concept, which would soon after be used to improve the cruise efficiency of early British jet transports such as the Trident, VC10, and BAC 1-11. In turn, these concepts were exploited further in the Hawker-Siddeley design for the A300B, ultimately the basis of Britain’s status as the centre of excellence for wing design in Airbus. Blackburn Skua and Roc concept seemed to have failed, generally speaking. Especially the Defiant, seeing intense action during the Battle of Britain, gained more success on enemy fighters, as long as they did not expect a fighter-like aircraft to have such a deadly sting in their backs. The Blackburn Roc saw much less action than the Defiant, only a few encounters with the enemy over the channel and during the evacuation of Dunkirk have been Blackburn Skua and Roc. Obviously the Roc is a constructive offspring of the Blackburn Skua. The bent wingtips have been straightened and the belly did not need the shallow Blackburn Skua and Roc for the Skuas bomb load any more. Instead, a four gun turret was installed- the same turret which was used in the Boulton Paul Defiant, by the way. Being clearly outclassed in combat, the Roc soon was sent into the second row, being used for training or for target tug duties. My model depicts a Blackburn Roc of No. The Special Hobby kit of the Blackburn Roc nearly brought me to my limits. Literally every part had to be adapted, sanded, stretched- or had to be scratched finally. After two years of moving the SH Roc from the workbench to Blackburn Skua and Roc dustbin and back again, I am really happy I got it finally done to a passably end. The entries in this guide are arranged by company name and include a history of each company, particularly its formation and that of subsidiaries together with mergers and take-overs. Brief details of the records, the relevant accession numbers and any limitations on access are given. Where the records have been listed this is indicated. A glossary of terms specific to the subject area is also included, together with an index. Background to the Collection The Museum's archive department began collecting records in the late 1960s and targeted a number of firms. Although many of the deposits were arranged through formal approaches by the Museum to companies, a significant number were offered by company staff: a significant example is the Supermarine archive (AC 70/4) including some 50,000 drawings, which would have been burnt had an employee not contacted the Museum. The collections seem to offer a bias towards certain types of record, notably drawings and production records, rather than financial records and board minutes. -

Aircraft of the London Auxiliaries - No.1 De Havilland D.H.9A by Ian White History (the late Mike Keep) De Havilland D.H.9A J8223 of ‘A’ Flight, No.600 Squadron, Northolt, circa 1926. In 1917 with the senior staff of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) eager to counter the aeroplane bombers of German’s Imperial Army Air Service that were then raiding London and take the war to Germany’s cities, the Corps had need of an effective long-range day-bomber. Amongst the bombers available to the Flying Corps was the Aircraft Manufacturing Company’s (Airco) de Havilland D.H.4, which, whilst being a satisfactory aircraft in most respects, proved inadequate in terms of its speed, range and bomb-load. By June of that year the Air Board, a department of the War Office, had sanctioned the production of a further 700 D.H.4s with which to equip an expansion of the RFC from 108 to 200 squadrons. However, at a meeting of the Air Board on the 23rd July Sir William Weir, one of the Board’s members and the Controller of Aeronautical Supplies at the Ministry of Munitions, produced a set of drawing for an extensively modified version of the D.H.4, the D.H.9, which he claimed would be faster and have a longer range than the ‘4. Weir, thereafter, proposed the D.H.9 be adopted to fulfil the contract for the additional 700 bombers - a proposal that was subsequently reviewed and accepted by the Board. Journal of Aeronautical History Paper No. 2012/07 THE EVOLUTION OF THE BRITISH ROTORCRAFT INDUSTRY 1842-2012 Eur Ing David Gibbings C Eng., FRAeS Based on a paper originally presented to the European Rotorcraft Forum in Hamburg, September 2009. ABSTRACT This paper relates the way in which rotorcraft developed in Britain, leading to the growth of an effective design and manufacturing industry. The narrative is divided into five sections, each of which represents defining phases in UK based activity leading towards the development of the modern helicopter: 1. The Pre-Flight Period (1842-1903) This section covers British activity during the period when the objective was simply to demonstrate powered flight by any means, and where rotors might be considered to be a way of achieving this. 2. The Early Helicopter Period (1903-1926). Early attempts to build helicopters, including the work of Louise Brennan, which achieved limited success with a rotor driven by a propellers mounted on the blade tips. 3. The Pre-War Years (1926-1939) This section gives emphasis to development of the gyroplane and in particular the work of Juan de la Cierva, with his UK-based company to develop his 'Autogiro', from which the understanding of rotor dynamics and control was established, and which was to lead to the realisation of the helicopter by others. Although UK rotary wing development was driven by the gyroplane, the work carried out by the Weir Company, which was to lead to the first successful British helicopter is discussed. 4. The War Years. (1939-1945) Rotary wing activities in the UK were very limited during World War 2, restricted to the work carried out by Raoul Hafner with the Rotachute/ Rotabuggy programme and the use of autogiros for the calibration of radar.
