Dana 1847'de Brook Farm'dan ayrılıp Horace Greeley'in yö nettiği New York Tribune'üne yazı kuruluna katıldı. O günlerde devrim can çekiş mekteydi. Dana yine aynı yıl, Brook Farm'dan eski arkadaşı William HenryCahnning'in hafta lık dergisi The Spirit of the Age'de yayımlanmak üzere makale leri bir daha gözden geçirdi. Green'in boyu bir seksenin üzerindeydi. New Eng land Çalışma Reformu Ligası'ndan Ezra Heywood'la birlikte, Proudhoncu fikirleri benimseyen bir örgüt kurdu. Heywood ve 1 1 Greene'in hazırladıkları kuruluş bildirisindeki sözlerle, bu örgü tün amacı "Spekülatif tekelciliğin yasal girişimler karısında haksız çıkarlar sağlamasına yolaçan sınıf yasalarının ve olum suz alışkanlıkların kaldırılması; devletin adalet ve karşılıklılık* temelinde yeniden örgütlenmesi"ydi8.· ı 873'e gelindiğinde Greene bu liganın (üyeleri arasında Warren, Andrews ve Benjamin Tucker da vardı) başkan yar dımcılığıru yürütüyordu. On Thursday, 11 June, the 35-year old Mellor had been working on the Commercial Union Assurance offices on St Georges Terrace when he tumbled backwards, breaking his back, to die in hospital a few hours later.1 In the days that followed, the labour movement rallied to support Mellor’s family. Bakers, boot-makers, printers and tailors sent subscription lists around their workplaces;2 the donations from twenty building jobs totaled £174 9s 4d, while Mellor’s employer and associates contributed £50.3 The Kalgoorlie and Boulder Workers Association forwarded their collections with notes of appreciation for Mellor’s organising in Melbourne and Sydney.4 The Perth and Fremantle Councils provided their Town Halls without charge for benefit concerts.5 The Relief Fund realised £45 from the sale of Mellor’s house and allotment, in Burt Street, Forrest Hill, a housing estate in North Perth.6 The Fund’s trustees paid out £15 on the funeral, to which a florist donated wreaths,7 while a further 1 West Australian (WA), 10 June 1897, p. 4; the building opened in December, WA, 2 December 1897, p. 3. 2 WA, 29 June 1897, p. 4, 6 July 1897, p.

  • The Deakinite Myth Exposed Other Accounts of Constitution-Makers, Constitutions and Citizenship
The Deakinite Myth Exposed Other accounts of constitution-makers, constitutions and citizenship This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2005 Geoffrey Trenorden BA Honours (Murdoch) Declaration I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. …………………………………….. Geoffrey Trenorden ii Abstract As argued throughout this thesis, in his personification of the federal story, if not immediately in his formulation of its paternity, Deakin’s unpublished memoirs anticipated the way that federation became codified in public memory. The long and tortuous process of federation was rendered intelligible by turning it into a narrative set around a series of key events. For coherence and dramatic momentum the narrative dwelt on the activities of, and words of, several notable figures. To explain the complex issues at stake it relied on memorable metaphors, images and descriptions. Analyses of class, citizenship, or the industrial confrontations of the 1890s, are given little or no coverage in Deakinite accounts. Collectively, these accounts are told in the words of the victors, presented in the images of the victors, clothed in the prejudices and predilections of the victors, while the losers are largely excluded. Those who spoke out against or doubted the suitability of the constitution, for whatever reason, have largely been removed from the dominant accounts of constitution-making. More often than not they have been ‘character assassinated’ or held up to public ridicule by Alfred Deakin, the master narrator of the Conventions and federation movement and by his latter-day disciples.

Wisse Kelly Scott Johnson Sholem Schwarzbard: Biography of a Jewish Assassin Abstract The thesis represents the first complete academic biography of a Jewish clockmaker, warrior poet and Anarchist named Sholem Schwarzbard. Schwarzbard's experience was both typical and unique for a Jewish man of his era. It included four immigrations, two revolutions, numerous pogroms, a world war and, far less commonly, an assassination. The latter gained him fleeting international fame in 1926, when he killed the Ukrainian nationalist leader Symon Petliura in Paris in retribution for pogroms perpetrated during the Russian Civil War (1917-20). After a contentious trial, a French jury was sufficiently convinced both of Schwarzbard's sincerity as an avenger, and of Petliura's responsibility for the actions of his armies, to acquit him on all counts. Mostly forgotten by the rest of the world, the assassin has remained a divisive figure in Jewish-Ukrainian relations, leading to distorted and reductive descriptions his life.

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term.

  • Anarchism in Australia
Anarchism in Australia Bob James 2009 Contents References And Suggested Readings ............................ 6 2 At least as early as the 1840s (“Australia” having only been settled by white Europeans in 1788), the term “anarchist” was used as a slander by conservatives against their political opponents; for example, by W. C. Wentworth against Henry Parkes and J. D. Lang for speaking in favor of Aus- tralian independence from Britain. This opportunistic blackening of reputations has continued to the present day. What has also continued is that Australian attempts to express the philosophy positively have reflected other countries’ concerns or global rather than local issues. For example, the first positive public expression of the philosophy was the Melbourne Anar- chist Club (MAC) which, established in 1886, consciously reflected the Boston Anarchist Club’s approach to strategy and philosophy, having a secretary, a chairperson, speakers’ rules, and pre- pared papers which the public were invited to hear. The club was also a response to the 1884 call by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the US and Canada for a celebration of May 1, 1886 as an expression of working-class solidarity. The first MAC meeting was held on that day at the instigation of Fred Upham from Rhode Island, the two Australian-born Andrade brothers, David and William, and three other discontented members of the Australasian Secular Association (ASA) based in Melbourne. Australian labor activists had been involved in Eight Hour Day agitations since 1871 and in deliberately associating themselves with the overseas movement for May Day the MAC organiz- ers exposed their lack of involvement in local labor politics and their vulnerability to the rise or fall of distant agendas.

The Anarchist Sage/Der goen anarkhist: Rabbi Yankev Meir Zalkind and Religious Genealogies of Anarchism by Anna Elena Torres In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies (February 2019) For the online version of this article: https://ingeveb.org/articles/the-anarchist-sage-der-goen-anarkhist In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies (February 2019) THE ANARCHIST SAGE/DER GOEN ANARKHIST: RABBI YANKEV MEIR ZALKIND AND RELIGIOUS GENEALOGIES OF ANARCHISM Anna Elena Torres Abstract: This paper examines the religious anarchist thought of Rabbi Dr. Yankev Meir Zalkind, the prolific philologist, editor, Orthodox rabbi, and mentor to poet-assassin Sholem Shvartsbard. In the early twentieth century, Zalkind developed a political philosophy of anarchism from his study of Talmudic ethics, retaining the particularity of Jewish identity and cultural autonomy within a vision of life liberated from capitalism, militarism, statism, and institutional oppression. His capacious politics dissolve the binary between religious conservatism and leftist atheism, anticipating the rise of the “spiritual Left” and critiques of political secularism. Zalkind drew political inspiration from the condition of diaspora, forging a theory of anti-statism from his experiences of statelessness. Rather than retrofitting secular radicalism or “judaizing” anarchism, Zalkind articulated his anti-statism through the language and logics of Jewish scripture while fiercely opposing contemporaneous anarchist strains of atheism, universalism, and antisemitism. This paper examines a series of interwoven elements of Zalkind’s work and worldview, including his translations of the Talmud; his intense relationship with Shvartsbard, particularly their ruminations on justice and Orthodoxy; his discord with secular anarchists; his editorship of London anarchist newspapers; and his aspiration to build a Jewish anarchist society in Palestine.
