In 1884 at a conference of the Federated Trades and Labour Unions of the United States and Canada, in the United States, the conference decided to launch an intensive campaign for an eight hour working day that would "culminate in widespread struggles on the 1st May 1886". Demonstrations were held across the United States and Canada on the 1st May 1886. In Chicago over 30,000 workers went on strike and over 80,000 took part in demonstrations to mark the struggle for the eight hour day. Two days later on the 3rd May striking workers met outside the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company. Chicago police fired on the workers, killing four and wounding many others. Chicago anarchists organised a protest meeting at Haymarket Square for the next evening. The rally was non-violent, as the rally was breaking up police charged the demonstrators. Someone threw a bomb at the police lines, killing one police officer. The police panicked firing indiscriminately into the crowd and at each other. Seven police and four demonstrators were killed and over one hundred police and demonstrators were wounded.
