Introduction As a first approximation, the caesura can be conceived of as a distinguished word boundary (in short : WB) whose location in the verse instance depends on the underlying pattern of the verse design. Let us consider, e.g., the case of the French Alexandrine : (1) XXXXXX XXXXXX Each verse instance that corresponds to the underlying pattern (1) contains two « subverses » ending with a « break syllable ». If lines (2-3) instantiate (1), they will respectively divide as follows : (2) (a) Je suis comme le ROI # d’un pays pluviEUX (classical) (b) Je suis comme la REI- ne # d’un pays lointain (non-classical) This allows us to define the notion of a caesura in straightforward terms :1 (3) WB #i is a caesura (in the verse instance under consideration) if, and only if : (i) #i follows the nucleus N of a non-final break syllable ; (ii) #i is not separated from N by any other WB. In the analyses given under (2), the caesura is represented by a double cross. We will call « hemistich » any sequence of words which is delimited either by one caesura and the verse beginning or end, or by two caesuras.2 Obviously, subverses and hemistichs do not necessarily coincide. In order to capture the various relations that may hold between them, we need further refinements. As a first step, we will characterize the conditions under which a WB is « associated with » a given metrical syllable in a verse instance : (4) WB #i is « associated with » metrical syllable σ (in the verse instance under consideration) if, and only if : (i) #i follows the nucleus N of σ ; (ii) #i is not separated from N by any other WB ; 3 (iii) #i is not separated from N by the nucleus of any other metrical syllable. 1 For the sake of simplicity, we will neglect the intricate problems raised by word groups that include clitics or appositives (see e.g. Devine & Stephens 1994). 2 Thus, contrary to what is suggested by etymology, a verse instance may contain more than two « hemistichs ». 3 Under certain conditions, contacts between word-final and word-initial vowels give rise either to metrical elision (i.e. to the erasure of the first vowel : V#V → Ø#V) or to metrical prodelision (i.e. to the erasure of the second vowel : V#V 2 Notice that, for a WB to be associated with a syllable, it is not required that this WB should follow the whole syllable. For example, in this dactylic hexameter :4 (5) w\ pavter hJmevtere Kronivdh, u{pate kreiovntwn (HOM. Il. VIII, 31) h ɔ| #1 pa|te|r #2 ɛ|me|te|re #3 k|kro|ni|dɛ| #4 y|pa|te #5 k|krej|jon|tɔn WBs #1, #2 and #4 are respectively associated with the syllables /ɔ/, /te/ and /dɛ/ ; as for WBs #3 and #5, they follow the final nucleus /e/ of hJmevtere or u{pate while being associated with the syllable /rek/ or /tek/ that results from the gemination of the initial /k/ of Kronivdh or kreiovntwn by virtue of regressive resyllabification (Allen 1973 : 210-220 ; Devine & Stephens 1994 : 39, 243-251 ; Dominicy 2002 : 332-334). Consequently, it is possible for a caesura to be associated with a syllable, i.e. to follow a given nucleus, without necessarily following the whole syllable under consideration ; as we will see below, WB #3 is the (« penthemimeral ») caesura of line (5). This is the reason why clause (i) of definition (4) has been formulated so as not to rule out such configurations. Definition (4) allows us to distinguish between two types of caesuras : a caesura is « synthetical » if, and only if, it is associated with the corresponding break syllable ; otherwise, it is « analytical ». For example, we have a synthetical caesura in (2a) but an analytical caesura in (2b) (Dominicy & Nasta 1993). 2. The Caesura in the Dactylic Hexameter and the Iambic Trimeter This approach runs into serious difficulties when applied to the metrical forms of Latin and Ancient Greek. Let us consider, e.g., the two major verse designs of Ancient Greek, viz. the dactylic hexameter of the Homeric corpus and the iambic trimeter of drama (tragedy or comedy). Each of them contain six feet consisting of two (metrical) positions. A position surfaces, in the verse instance, either as one syllabe — heavy (–) or light (∪) — or as a « pyrrhic » sequence of two sub-positions, i.e. two light syllables (∪∪). The possible locations of the caesura are indicated in (6-8) by double crosses whose different sizes figure the relative frequencies of the various configurations available (positions are numbered from 1 to 12, and subpositions by adding the letter « a », resp. « b », to the number of the corresponding position) : → V#Ø), so that the preference for metrical elision or prodelision will be relevant to WB associations in numerous examples. On this issue, see e.g. Descroix (1931 : 255-257) and De Neubourg (1986 : 95-96, 118-119). 4 In the phonological transcriptions of Greek, accentual diacritics are omitted and syllabic division is indicated by vertical lines. Nu. 141 ; ± 13%) ∪ ∪ ∪ ∪ – – – # ∪ – ∪ – ∪ – In order to rely on a precise terminology, we first have to determine the conditions under which a WB will to said to be « associated with » a given (sub)position — in short : (s)P — of the verse : (9) WB #i is « associated with » (sub)position (s)P (in the verse instance under consideration) if, and only if, #i is associated with the last syllable which (partially or totally) fills (s)P. The caesura of the dactylic hexameter is associated with P5 (« penthemimeral » caesura), P7 (« hephthemimeral » caesura) or sP5a (« trochaic » caesura).5 In the tragic trimeter, the 5 We consider (contra van Raalte 1986 : 82) that the hephthemimeral caesura, though very infrequent, was and remained easily identifiable owing to its repeated use in such specific contexts as Homeric formulaic lines (Lehrs 1882 : 387-413), oracular poems (Parke & Wormell 1956) and Orphic Hymns (Quandt 1955). 4 « penthemimeral » caesura is associated with P5 and the « hephthemimeral » caesura with P7 ; in the comic trimeter, there is a third possibility, viz. the medial caesura associated with P6. In spite of such surface variations, some data suggest that speakers perceived both the dactylic hexameter and the iambic trimeter as instantiating a complex verse design where each subverse consists of three (dactylic or iambic) feet, i.e. of three pairs SW or WS consisting of a strong and a weak position. Aristotle (Metaph. 1093a) reports that Pythagoreans analyzed the dactylic hexameter according to a 9:8 ratio, i.e. as three dactyls followed by two dactyls and a dissyllabic foot. Bassett (1916 ; 1919 : 347) correctly pointed out that this segmentation, which does not match any sensible division into surface hemistichs, cannot provide evidence in favour of standard views on the caesura. But if we assume that Pythagoreans referred to each underlying foot through its prototypical or compulsory surface realization (see 3.2, 4.1.1), we can interpret their analysis as an approximate description of an underlying verse design. Quintilian relied on the same abstract approach when he attempted to relate so-called « Sotadean » verses to dactylic hexameters or iambic trimeters with a penthemimeral caesura (Dominicy 2001 : 81-82 ; see also Dominicy 1999 : 354-355). 3. The Metrical Structure of the Dactylic Hexameter and the Iambic Trimeter These intuitions agree with Prince’s (1989) hypothesis that the caesura may not fall more than one (metrical) position from the « center » of the line. However, his theory fails to provide a clear or satisfactory account for several relevant data. 3.1. Positions and subpositions Schemes (7) and (8) indicate that, in the iambic trimeter, P6 can be filled with a pyrrhic sequence. One may wonder, then, why iambic trimeters do not allow the trochaic caesura. Prince puts forward two different explanations for this phenomenon. The first one, which goes back to Devine and Stephens (1975 : 414), relies on the tree structures assigned to the two verse designs in hand. In the dactylic hexameter, each weak position dominates two subpositions, so that each underlying foot (in short : F) includes three terminal nodes (10a) ; by contrast, the positions of the iambic trimeter are terminal nodes, so that subpositions do not appear in the underlying foot structure (10b) : (10) (a) F F S W (b) W S S W 5 The default principle of a one-to-one mapping between (sub)positions and metrical syllables is defeated in two cases : when a heavy syllable corresponds to a weak position of the dactylic hexameter (« contraction ») and when a pyrrhic sequence of two light syllables corresponds to a position of the iambic trimeter (« resolution »).

In chapter 6 of his Art of English Poesy, Puttenham thus attributes to poetry a fundamental role in the community: it turns discourse into public utterance, it lends memorability and authority to speech, both in the ancient and in the contemporary world: ‘And the great princes and popes and sultans would one salute and greet another – sometime in friendship and sport, sometime in earnest and enmity – by rhyming verses, and nothing seemed clerkly done but must be done in rhyme’. These reflections come after centuries of change in the English language, a change that is also reflected in the extraordinarily rich range of metres and poetic forms that develop between the medieval and early modern period in the British Isles, and that by the sixteenth century become also the object of theoretical reflection.     Editor’s Introduction: Scansion DAVID NOWELL SMITH _______________________ I would like to start from an intuition.1 This might seem an abuse of editorial privilege, and indeed might strike one as more generally tendentious: is an issue on ‘scansion’ the place for discussing one’s intuitions at all? For a start, it contravenes quite brazenly the strict separation between description and performance, lain down most powerfully by John Hollander well over half a century ago. For Hollander, a ‘descriptive’ system of scansion would aim at presenting schematically the whole ‘musical’ structure of a poem, whether this consists, in any particular case, of the prosodic features of the language in which it is written, the arrangement of elements completely foreign to that language (syllable counting in English verse for example), or even the arrangement of type on a page. A performative system of scansion, on the other hand, would present a series of rules governing a locutionary reading of a particular poem, before a real or implied audience. It would end up by describing not the poem itself, but the unstated canons of taste behind the rules. Performative systems of scansion, disguised as descriptive ones, have composed all but a few of the metrical studies of the past.     Introduction to Meter A stress or accent is the greater amount of force given to one syllable than another. English is a language in which all syllables are stressed or unstressed, and traditional poetry in English has used stress patterns as a fundamental structuring device. Meter is simply the rhythmic pattern of stresses in verse. To scan a poem means to read it for meter, an operation whose noun form is scansion. This can be tricky, for although we register and reproduce stresses in our everyday language, we are usually not aware of what we’re going. Learning to scan means making a more or less unconscious operation conscious. There are four types of meter in English: iambic, trochaic, anapestic, and dactylic. Each is named for a basic foot (usually two or three syllables with one strong stress). Iambs are feet with an unstressed syllable, followed by a stressed syllable. Only in nursery rhymes to do we tend to find totally regular meter, which has a singsong effect, Chidiock Tichborne’s poem being a notable exception. Here is a single line from Emily Dickinson that is totally regular iambic: _ / │ _ / │ _ / │ _ / My life had stood – a loaded Gun – This line serves to notify readers that the basic form of the poem will be iambic tetrameter, or four feet of iambs. The lines that follow are not so regular. Trochees are feet with a stressed syllable, followed by an unstressed syllable. If one part is missing, then the automobile shutters, sputters, collapses and dies, thus so with poetry. One of the many devices at a poet's dispos­ al is meter. Paul Fussell Jr., author of Poetic Meter and Poetic Form, gives a wonderfully succinct definition of meter: Meter is what results when the natural rhythmical movements of colloquial speech are heightened, organized, and regulated so that pattern emerges from the relative phonetic haphazard of ordinary utterance. Because it inhabits the physical form of the very words themselves, meter is the most fundamental technique of order avail­ able to the poet (Fussell 5) Meter may be the "most fundamental technique," but it is ripe with meaning.

    On Translating Homer’s Iliad Caroline Alexander Abstract: This reflective essay explores the considerations facing a translator of Homer’s work; in par- ticular, the considerations famously detailed by the Victorian poet and critic Matthew Arnold, which re- main the gold standard by which any Homeric translation is measured today. That is a task for which I have neither the time nor the courage.”1 So begins Matthew Arnold’s classic essay “On Translating Ho- mer,” the North Star by which all subsequent trans- lators of Homer have steered, and the gold stan- dard by which all translations of Homer are judged. A reader will find Arnold’s principles referenced, directly or indirectly, in the introduction to most modern translations–Richmond Lattimore’s, Rob- ert Fagles’s, Robert Fitzgerald’s, and more recently Peter Green’s. Additionally, Arnold’s discussion of these principles serves as a primer of sorts for poets and writers of any stripe, not only those audacious enough to translate Homer.     Introduction his book is for anyone who wants to read poetry with a better understanding of its craft and technique ; it is also a textbook T and crib for school and undergraduate students facing exams in practical criticism. Teaching the practical criticism of poetry at several universities, and talking to students about their previous teaching, has made me sharply aware of how little consensus there is about the subject. Some teachers do not distinguish practical critic- ism from critical theory, or regard it as a critical theory, to be taught alongside psychoanalytical, feminist, Marxist, and structuralist theor- ies ; others seem to do very little except invite discussion of ‘how it feels’ to read poem x. And as practical criticism (though not always called that) remains compulsory in most English Literature course- work and exams, at school and university, this is an unwelcome state of affairs. For students there are many consequences. Teachers at school and university may contradict one another, and too rarely put the problem of differing viewpoints and frameworks for analysis in perspective ; important aspects of the subject are omitted in the confusion, leaving otherwise more than competent students with little or no idea of what they are being asked to do. How can this be remedied without losing the richness and diversity of thought which, at its best, practical criticism can foster ? What are the basics ? How may they best be taught ? My own answer is that the basics are an understanding of and ability to judge the elements of a poet’s craft. Profoundly different as they are, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Pope, Dickinson, Eliot, Walcott, and Plath could readily converse about the techniques of which they are common masters ; few undergraduates I have encountered know much about metre beyond the terms ‘blank verse’ and ‘iambic pentameter’, much about form beyond ‘couplet’ and ‘sonnet’, or anything about rhyme more complicated than an assertion that two words do or don’t.

The empirical focus is the metrical structure of Seneca's anapaestic odes. On the basis of a detailed formal analysis, in which special attention is paid to the delimitation and internal structure of metrical periods, I argue against the dimeter colometry traditionally assumed. This conclusion in turn is based on a second, more methodological claim, namely that in establishing the colometry of an ancient piece of poetry, the modern metrician is only allowed to set apart a given string of metrical elements as a separate metron, colon or period, if this postulated metrical entity could 'aurally' be distinguished as such by the hearer.

    APPENDIX B Basic Guide to Latin Meter and Scansion Latin poetry follows a strict rhythm based on the quantity of the vowel in each syllable. Each line of poetry divides into a number of feet (analogous to the measures in music). The syllables in each foot scan as “long” or “short” according to the parameters of the meter that the poet employs. A vowel scans as “long” if (1) it is long by nature (e.g., the ablative singular ending in the first declen- sion: puellā); (2) it is a diphthong: ae (saepe), au (laudat), ei (deinde), eu (neuter), oe (poena), ui (cui); (3) it is long by position—these vowels are followed by double consonants (cantātae) or a consonantal i (Trōia), x (flexibus), or z.
