Installing Lotus Notes 6 for a New User (Mac)

Before You Begin This installation… Do You Have a Lotus Notes Account?

Minimum System Requirements

Lotus Notes 6.5.x: OS X v10.1, 128 MB Memory, 250 MB free disk space, PPC G3

Lotus Notes 6.0.2: OS 9.2, 128 MB Memory, 175 MB free disk space, PPC G3

If you do not have a Lotus Notes Account you can request one by logging onto https://adam.cc.sunysb.edu. After you have been notified by the Computer Accounts office that your account has been set up, return to the same website to download your ID file to the desktop of your Mac. Your Notes ID file is required to install Notes.

This is an example of a Notes ID file.

If you are going to install Notes at home or in another remote location be sure to copy your ID file to a USB flash drive or CD and take it with you. It is always a good idea to keep a copy of your ID file in a secure place as a backup.

Step 1: Download the Software

You can download the software from the DoIT web site,softweb at http://softweb.cc.sunysb.edu

• Under the heading Email & Telnet select Lotus Notes • Select Notes 6.0.2 if you are using Mac OS version 9.1 or 9.2 • Select Notes 6.5.x (x will vary depending on what the latest version is) if you are using Mac OS X. • Save the Notes download file to your desktop.

1 of 18 Note: If you are using as your web browser, you must open Safari Preferences and uncheck the box Open “safe” after downloading, before attempting to download the Notes file.

The resultant file will have an .hqx suffix and will be similar to this.

Double-click the file icon on your desktop to launch Stuffit Expander, which will expand the downloaded file to create the Lotus Notes (shown below).

A CD containing Lotus Notes and other software can also be purchased from the Seawolves Market for a nominal charge.

Step 2: Install Lotus Notes

Double-click the Install Lotus Notes icon. The window pictured below will appear.

Click Continue.

Click Continue.

Click Agree.

Click Continue.

Click Quit to complete the installation.

Locate the Lotus Notes application icon (your hard drive-> Applications->Lotus Notes) and drag it to your Dock to create a Dock .

Step 3: Establish a Network Connection

If you are on a broadband network (i.e., your office, cable modem, DSL), be sure that your network connection is in place and properly functioning (it’s functioning if you can access the internet). If your location has a dialup connection to the Internet, you must establish the dialup connection before continuing with the Lotus Notes setup.

Step 4: Launch Notes 6 for the First Time

Click the Notes icon in your Dock, or double-click the Notes icon in the Lotus Notes folder.

Click New Setup.

Click Next.

In the Your name box enter your first and last name, as listed in the SUNYSB Address Book.

In the Domino server name box, enter notes.cc.sunysb.edu.

Make sure that I want to connect to a Domino Server is checked.

Click Next.

Installing Your ID File

If your ID file is on a CD or other external media, insert the media now. Click the Browse button. This will bring you to the Enter New User Id File Name dialog box.

In this example, the ID file has been saved on the desktop. Click the file yourname.id to select it and then click the Open button. This will bring you back to the Lotus Notes Client Configuration dialog box.

Note that the path to your ID file has been inserted in the File Name field. Click the Next button.

Click the Yes button to save your ID file to the Notes data directory on your Mac.

Enter your Notes password and click the OK button.

Make sure that no items are checked on this page. Click the Next button.

Click OK.

If your name does not contain a cross certificate for this Organization, this screen will appear.

Click Yes.

Choose No thanks, just give me the defaults.

Click the Mail icon to open your Mail database.

The About the Mail Database screen will be displayed.

Click the window close icon (small circle to the left of About Your Name – Design).

Once your inbox is visible, click the Actions menu and choose Improve Security.

15 of 18 Step 6: Some Final Settings

In order to ensure that you can correctly send Microsoft Word attachments to others who may not be using Lotus Notes, it is necessary to change several settings in your Lotus Notes Office Location Document. This step will explain how to make the changes.

Click on the arrow to the right of the icon labeled Office in the lower left corner of the Lotus Notes inbox window.

A popup menu will appear.

Select the last menu item – Edit Current.

16 of 18 Your Location document (example shown below) is opened as a result of the previous selection.

Click on the Mail tab, click on the arrow to the right of “Format for addressed to internet addresses: ”, and select Notes Rich Text Format.

17 of 18 Click on the Advanced tab and then click on the MIME tab.

Click on the arrow to the right of “Outbound attachment conversion: “ and select AppleDouble (Base64 only).

18 of 18 Lastly, we will select the browser that is launched when you click on a link in an email message. To do this click on the Internet Browser tab.

Click on the arrow to the right of Internet browser, and select Other from the popup menu.

Click on the flashlight icon and navigator to your favorite browser on your hard drive. In this illustration Safari has been selected.

Click the Save & Close icon at the top left in the window.

Congratulations! This completes your Lotus Notes setup.
