ABSTRACT Maude Petre is a somewhat neglected figure mentioned today chiefly in regard to her association with the Catholic Modernist, George Tyrrell. The aim of the thesis will be to strive to retrieve her from this neglect by showing that she was a significant figure in her own right with a substantial body of published work. Attention will be given in particular to her writings in the later years of her life in which little interest has hitherto been shown. The thesis will endeavour to trace her main ideas as expressed in her published works and see how they developed over the course of her long life. The issue of authority and liberty in Church and society will be highlighted as one of the dominant themes of her writing. Her life and thought will be placed in the context of her age and its many changes both in Church and society and her writings will be related to the events of her own life as recorded in her own diaries. An attempt will be made in conclusion to evaluate the wider significance of her life and thought. In considering the aims of this thesis, consideration must first be given to the wider historiographical context out of which the thesis has arisen. The Modernist movement in the Catholic Church in England in the opening years of the twentieth century has received wide attention, often placing it in the larger context of continental Catholic Modernism especially in France and Italy. Key works here would be those by Vidler (1934 and 1970), Ranchetti (1969), Reardon (1970), Loome (1979), Daly (1980) and Jodock (2000). All these contain material on the Modernist movement in England but more particular studies of this can be found in Schoenl (1982) and in the studies of the leading figures of English Catholic Modernism especially Von Hügel in Bedoyère (1951) and Barmann (1972) and Tyrrell in Sagovsky (1990). Maude Petre was a close friend of the last two and their ideas and writings were important for her. But in this wider historiography Maude Petre appears very much as a minor figure and in some studies is more or less ignored. The consensus has tended to be that of Vidler that her ‘life and thought were so closely bound up with Tyrrell’s that they could not be satisfactorily considered apart’ (1970,p.109). Up to Crews’s study of her (1984) she was given little attention in her own right. There is Walker’s obituary article (1943) where he writes as a personal friend in praiseworthy terms of her character but ignores her writings, Hamilton’s article (1967) which is largely about her book

Drawing inspiration directly from the works of John Henry Newman, this document not only affirmed the insights found in his Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), which church authorities embraced during the first decade of New- man’s life as a Catholic, but also his provocative Rambler article, “On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine” (1859), which resulted in episcopal accusations of heresy and Newman’s delation to Rome. The tension between Newman’s theory of development and his appeal for the hierarchy to consider the experience of the “faithful” ultimately centers on the “seat” of authority, and whose voices matter. A tthe height of the Know Nothing agitation in the eighteen-fifties, Apersonal and political circumstances combined to project a Phila- delphian and recent convert to Catholicism, Joseph Ripley Chandler, into a position of national prominence as a champion of his Church and defender of his fellow Catholics. Chandler was already well-known for his achievements in journalism, literature, and politics. A native of Massachusetts, he had come to Philadelphia in 1815 to work as a schoolmaster. When in 1822 he became a salaried editorial writer on the moribund Gazette of the United States, an association began that would bring the Gazette national influence as a Whig journal and Chandler, its eventual proprietor, distinction as an editor and publisher. E.P. Ober- holtzer, Philadelphia's literary historian, remarks of Chandler that "no man who ever edited a paper in Philadelphia brought greater honor to his journalist's vocation." For reasons of health Chandler sold the Gazette in 1847, but he maintained his connection with Graham's American Monthly Magazine, serving as editor in 1848-1849. He also continued to contribute to it and to other magazines the polished pieces that had already brought him some measure of literary reputation. For many years a distinguished Freemason, Chandler's speeches and writ- ings on Masonic topics were highly esteemed and widely circulated in the United States and Western Europe. Finally, Chandler's role as a long-time member of Philadelphia City Council and promoter of civic betterment had brought him the respect of his fellow citizens.' It is not difficult to understand why the Whig Committee of the Second Congressional District found him an attractive candidate for the United States Congress.

Portier, Ph.D. In its analysis of mystical body of Christ theology in the twentieth century, this dissertation identifies three major streams of mystical body theology operative in the early part of the century: the Roman, the German-Romantic, and the French-Social- Liturgical. Delineating these three streams of mystical body theology sheds light on the diversity of scholarly positions concerning the heritage of mystical body theology, on its mid twentieth-century recession, as well as on Pope Pius XII’s 1943 encyclical, Mystici Corporis Christi, which enshrined “mystical body of Christ” in Catholic magisterial teaching. Further, it links the work of Virgil Michel and Louis-Marie Chauvet, two scholars remote from each other on several fronts, in the long, winding French stream.

    ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century. IF the common feature of the vario.us forms of the modern­ ist movement in the Roman Catholic Church is, as Abbe Loisy has said, '' the desire to adapt the Catholic religion to the intellectual, moral and social needs of the present time," 1 it cannot but make a claim upon the interest of Christians who are not members of that Communion. There is no branch of the Christian Church which is not confronted in one way or another with the problem of adjusting the Christian faith to the intellectual outlook and social aspira­ tions of the age. How Christianity is to be interpreted and defended, how it is to be persuasively presented with a due regard to scientific and philosophical thought, to the results of historial science in the investigation of non-Christian religions, of the literature of the Bible, of the origin of Christianity, and of the development of the dogmas and institutions of the Church, and to the social ideals which are at work in democratic and socialistic movements-that is a problem with whose solution every Church is forced to concern itself. It is true that the problem presses itself upon the Roman Catholic Church in an exceptionally acute form.
