Stanislav Byshok Alexey Kochetkov NEONAZIS & EUROMAIDAN From democracy to dictatorship [Second edition] 2014 Stanislav Byshok, Alexey Kochetkov NEONAZIS & EUROMAIDAN. From democracy to dictator- ship. [Second edi on]. “Whoever is not jumping is a Moskal” is a chant that women and men of diff erent ages who took to Kiev Independence Square in win- ter 2013-2014 repeated trying to get warm. They kept jumping and laughing, for nobody in the ‘brave new world’ of the Ukrainian revo- lu on under Stepan Bandera’s banner fancied gaining the character of a staunch enemy of Ukrainian statehood. Mass demonstra ons of “angry ci zens” in Ukraine had objec ve reasons. This was a protest against ineff ec ve and corrupt govern- ment, against police and bureaucra c abuse of power, against unclear and dead-end policies of the President and the Government. All na onal libera on movements use the popular ideas and po- li cal sen ments that dominate the society as their posi ve mani- festo. Thus, exclusively le -wing ideologies were mainstream in the Russian Empire in 1917, radical Islamism was most popular in Arab countries during the Arab spring of 2012, whereas na onalism, also radical, turned mainstream in the Ukraine of 2013-2014. The book describes the development of Ukraine’s na onal- ist groups since 1991 un l present day. It focuses on the history of the parliamentary right-wing radical Svoboda party and the non- parliamentary Right Sector movement. The authors study the ideol- ogy, psychology and methods of poli cal struggle of these structures.

We reckon among political prisoners individuals who are being persecuted in connection with the realization of their legitimate rights as well as those who are being unlawfully or disproportionately persecuted by the authorities for political reasons. We do not regard as political prisoners those individuals who used violence against the person or called for violence on the grounds of religion, nationality, race etc. All the criteria for considering individuals as political prisoners are published on our website. There are 46 names in the present list. The names of those who are being persecuted mainly in connection with the realization of their right to freedom of religion can be found in a separate list. This list is far from being complete. It includes only those individuals and cases for which we have managed to collect and analyse sufficient information for a convincing conclusion to be drawn about a politically motivated and illegal nature of their criminal prosecution.

  • Russia 2016 Human Rights Report
RUSSIA 2016 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Russian Federation has a highly centralized, authoritarian political system dominated by President Vladimir Putin. The bicameral Federal Assembly consists of a directly elected lower house (State Duma) and an appointed upper house (Federation Council), both of which lacked independence from the executive. State Duma elections during 2016 and the presidential election in 2012 were marked by accusations of government interference and manipulation of the electoral process. Security forces generally reported to civilian authorities, except in some areas of the North Caucasus. The continuing occupation and purported “annexation” of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula continued to affect the human rights situation significantly and negatively. The government continued to train, equip, and supply pro-Russian forces in eastern Ukraine, who were joined by numerous fighters from Russia. Credible observers attributed thousands of civilian deaths and injuries, as well as widespread abuses, to Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine’s Donbas region, and to Russian occupation authorities in Crimea (see the Country Reports on Human Rights for Ukraine). Authorities also conducted politically motivated arrests, detentions, and trials of Ukrainian citizens in Russia, many of whom claimed to have been tortured. Human rights groups asserted that numerous Ukrainian citizens remained in Russia as political prisoners. The most significant human rights problems were: Restrictions on Political Participation and Freedom of Expression, Assembly, and Media: Authorities restricted citizens’ ability to choose their government through free and fair elections and increasingly instituted a range of measures to suppress dissent. The government passed repressive laws and selectively employed existing ones to harass, discredit, prosecute, imprison, detain, fine, and suppress individuals and organizations critical of the government.

The goal of the study was to document gross violations of human rights in relation to illegal detention in the armed conflict area in Eastern Ukraine. This study is based on testimonies of those who had been illegally detained in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions by pro-Russian military groups. These statements were collected during monitoring visits to places of detention on the liberated territories. This study also takes into account information obtained from state authorities and open sources. The data presented here shows that there have been gross and systemic violations of human rights of detainees, including inhumane conditions and cruel treatment and tortures. On the basis of collected data, the authors of this report recommend a number of measures aimed at stopping the identified human rights violations on the territory outside of Ukraine’s control; directing the attention of international community to these issues, as well as supporting the prosecution of the perpetrators.
