Scale cartouches appear in four corners of the chart, and richly decorated coats of arms have been engraved in the interior. The chart is oriented to the west. It shows the seacoasts of Europe from Novaya Zemlya and the Gulf of Sydra in the east, and the Azores and the west coast of Greenland in the west. In the north the chart extends to the northern coast of Spitsbergen, and in the south to the Canary Islands. The eastern part of the Mediterranean id included in the North African interior. The chart is printed on parchment and coloured by a contemporary hand. The colours red and green and blue still present, other colours faded. An intriguing line in green colour, 34 cm long and about 3mm bold is running offshore the Norwegian coast all the way south of Greenland, and closely following Tara Polar Arctic Circle ! Blaeu's chart greatly influenced other Amsterdam publisher's.

    ARTICLE Australasian Hydrographic Society Early Hydrography Recognised Willem Janszoon Monument Unveiled in Canberra The last project commemorating the 400th anniversary of Australia first being charted took place recently in the leafy suburb of Griffith, within the Australian Capital Territory. On Saturday 20th October 2007, a three-in-one –launch was held: with the inauguration of the Willem Janszoon Commemorative Park, the issue of the Explorer’s Guide for a series of local walks and the unveiling of a Willem Janszoon Monument. The launch was organised by Australia On The Map (AOTM). Griffith and the surrounding suburbs, a predominantly diplomatic district, have the distinction of having nearly all the streets named after hydrographers, explorers or their ships. From Bass to Bougainville, from Van Diemen to Vancouver, from Cook to Carstensz, the list of avenues and boulevards include names such as Torres, Flinders, Moresby, La Perouse, Dalrymple, Hartog and, in all, totals some 150 streets and byways. Amongst such esteemed company, the dedication of a major park and monument in Jans​zoon’s name bares testament to his unique achievement in being the first European to chart the Australian coast, a feat he accomplished when he surveyed over 300 kilometres of Cape York in 1606. Similar to the long-awaited unveiling of the Willem de Vlamingh Monument in Perth, Western Australia, four days earlier, it has taken a long time to raise money, design and build the sculptured monument and, of course, obtain necessary sanctions and approvals. Both projects were meant to have been completed in 2006, but the end results were worth the wait.

The theme for this Challenge is Galaxies of the Local Group. I’ve written up some notes about galaxies & galaxy clusters (pp 3 & 4 of this document). Johan Brink Peter Harvey Late-October is prime time for galaxy viewing, and you’ll be exploring the James Smith best the sky has to offer. All the objects are visible in binoculars, just make sure you’re properly dark adapted to get the best view. Galaxy viewing starts right after sunset, when the centre of our own Milky Way is visible low in the west. The edge of our spiral disk is draped along the horizon, from Carina in the south to Cygnus in the north. As the night progresses the action turns north- and east-ward as Orion rises, drawing the Milky Way up with it. Before daybreak, the Milky Way spans from Perseus and Auriga in the north to Crux in the South. Meanwhile, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are in pole position for observing. The SMC is perfectly placed at the start of the evening (it culminates at 21:00 on November 30), while the LMC rises throughout the course of the night. Many hundreds of deep-sky objects are on display in the two Clouds, so come prepared! Soon after nightfall, the rich galactic fields of Sculptor and Grus are in view. Gems like Caroline’s Galaxy (NGC 253), the Black-Bottomed Galaxy (NGC 247), the Sculptor Pinwheel (NGC 300), and the String of Pearls (NGC 55) are keen to be viewed.

MILONE 4,5 (Received 2 June 2020; Accepted 20 July 2020) Draft version July 23, 2020 ABSTRACT Intrigued by the extended red-giant clump (RC) stretching across the colour–magnitude diagram of the stars in a 50×50 pc2 region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) containing the clusters NGC 1938 and NGC 1939, we have studied the stellar populations to learn about the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in this area. The extended RC is caused by a large and uneven amount of extinction across the field. Its slope reveals anomalous extinction properties, with AV =E(B-V) ' 4:3, indicating the presence of an additional grey component in the optical contributing about 30 % of the total extinction in the field and requiring big grains to be about twice as abundant as in the diffuse ISM. This appears to be consistent with the amount of big grains injected into the surrounding ISM by the about 70 SNII explosions estimated to have occurred during the lifetime of the ∼ 120 Myr old NGC 1938. Although this cluster appears today relatively small and would be hard to detect beyond the distance of M 31, with an estimated initial mass of ∼ 4800 M NGC 1938 appears to have seriously altered the extinction properties in a wide area. This has important implications for the interpretation of luminosities and masses of star-forming galaxies, both nearby and in the early universe.

We present the results of an investigation of post-Main Sequence mass loss from stars in clusters in the Magellanic Clouds, based around an imaging survey in the L′-band (3.8 µm) performed with the VLT at ESO. The data are complemented with JHKs (ESO and 2MASS) and mid-IR photometry (TIMMI2 at ESO, ISOCAM on-board ISO, and data from IRAS and MSX). The goal is to determine the influence of initial metallicity and initial mass on the mass loss and evolution during the latest stages of stellar evolution. Dust-enshrouded giants are identified by their reddened near-IR colours and thermal-IR dust excess emission. Most of these objects are Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) carbon stars in intermediate-age clusters, with progenitor masses between 1.3 and ∼5 M⊙. Red supergiants with circumstellar dust envelopes are found in young clusters, and have progenitor masses between 13 and 20 M⊙. Post-AGB objects (e.g., Planetary Nebulae) and massive stars with detached envelopes and/or hot central stars are found in several clusters. We model the spectral energy distributions of the cluster IR objects, in order to estimate their bolometric luminosities and mass-loss rates.

Baars Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie Bonn, Germany Preface The organisation and operation of URSI can be seen as a sailing trip around the world by ten boats, each representing one of the ten Commissions of URSI, that gather at three year intervals in a place on earth decided by the central overseers, the Council. At these General Assemblies the captains of the Commission ships meet with the Council to discuss the experiences of the recent period and make plans for the next. The crews of the ten boats set up their individual meetings to present the scientific discoveries of the last three years to their colleagues who could not fit on the ship and travelled to the harbour to hear the news. Occasionally, crews from more than one boat find common interest in holding joint meetings. Also, individual captains may make landfall by invitation at a suitable place for a conference on a special subject of interest. This procedure has been in place for a hundred years to great satisfaction of the URSI community and with considerable success. It is not unusual to accompany such a centennial with the publication of a book on the history of the organisation. The URSI Centenary Book, of which this chapter is a part, will do just that. But how to write a history of a journey with short highlights every three years and intermediate years of calm? In addition, the highlights, the General Assemblies, tend to be rather similar in structure and there is a danger that the story will become repetitive and rather boring.
