SURVEY REPORT 2 SUGUT FOREST RESERVE

INTRODUCTION

The Trusan Sugut Forest Reserve covering about 8,680 ha was gazetted as a Class I Protection Forest in November 2014. The Sabah Forestry Department in currently in the process of preparing a forest management plan (FMP) for Trusan Sugut. With the principal goal of management being biodiversity conservation, a bird survey was commissioned by the Sabah Forestry Department. The second part of the field survey was carried out over a 5-day period, from 11th − 15th December 2015. Four persons were involved in this field survey (Plate 1).

FIELD METHODS Sampling Field sampling points were determined on a map based on forest type and then located on the ground with the use of a GPS. Field recording followed the protocol outlined in Appendix A. data for each point is recorded onto a datasheet (Appendix B). Recording of was also carried out while traveling between points (Appendix C).

One hundred eighty four (184) bird species were recorded over a 5-day period, nine of which were Bornean endemics.

Conclusion 184 species of birds recorded including 9 endemic is a great representation for 5 days survey work. This survey is more by 25 species compared to previous survey despite of smoggy condition from the forest fires across Paitan area and burning site from Palm oil plantation expansion by villagers along Sugut River. However, in not affected area, large numbers of trees are in flowers contributed to good abundant of and nectar dependent birds. Total species from the two surveys is 212 species of bird for Trusan Sugut and 10 species of Bornean endemic discovered so far;

Bornean ground-cuckoo, Bornean Falconet or Bornean Bristlehead is still yet to be discovered.
