“Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago. -

Lift this section out! This year marks 25 years of Blues for Byron Bay. It’s like watching a child grow up – it’s hard to believe that someone you knew as a tiny baby could possibly be an adult in what seems like a blink of an eye. But that’s how it is for Bluesfest. I remember fondly the gigs at the Piggery (Arts Factory) dancing along to the Blind Boys from Alabama singing If I had a Hammer. Which I guess, now if it were to be contemporised might be something like If I had an Allen Key. I thought the Blind Boys were in their 80s then. They must be well into their 90s – maybe even 100 – by now, and still shining on. I guess it proves that gospel is better for longevity than botox or juice fasts. So in an economic landscape that sees the big festivals struggling, one wonders why a festival, in a regional location such as Byron Bay, seems to have established such longevity and such well recognised international standing. Perhaps it’s the town of Byron and the utopian mystique it still holds; perhaps it’s the nostalgia of seeing acts that we loved when we were 20, or the thrill of seeing acts that are breaking bad right now, the soul-stirring goosebump-producing thrill of authentic blues, or the feeling of hot sweaty bodies dancing beside you. Maybe it’s that there’s something gloriously adult to do at Easter when the kids are at home having their chocolate sugar rush. -

GUIDE TO THE DEB DOYLE ARCHIVE IN THE POWERHOUSE MUSEUM Paul Wilson 2008 CONTENTS Biographical Note Series List Series Descriptions and Item Lists COLLECTED ARCHIVES BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Registration Number: 2008/53/1 Creator: Doyle, Deb Deb Doyle, née Deborah (Debbie) Eva Baer, was born on the first day of 1955, at the King George V Memorial Hospital, in Camperdown, Sydney. From age two and a half to twelve, she lived with her grandparents in Eastwood, Sydney and attended Kent Road Public School, also in Eastwood. During these early years, her parents sought to reconcile their marriage but eventually divorced in 1963, when their daughter was eight. Deb's interest in the world of popular music developed at about this time. 'Ever since the Beatles tour in June 1964, when I was nine, I'd found solace and balance in making picture books, writing poems, drawing, painting, and later, playing the recorder and listening to DJ Ward Austin's programs on Radio 2UW ("Even granny tunes her tranny to the New 'UW!").' Just after Christmas 1966, Deb and her mother moved across Sydney to a one-bedroom basement flat in Morehead Street, Redfern. After one term at Randwick Girls High School, Deb transferred to Sydney Girls High. When she was thirteen, she and her mother moved again, across the street to another one-bedroom flat in the Housing Commission's 'Kendall' block. She created the archive's earliest paintings and posters of pop artists and groups at about this time. In October 1967, Deb and her friend Cheryl went to Hyde Park to attend the Waratah Festival, where they saw the Masters' Apprentices perform their hit song 'Living in a Child's Dream'. -
