2018-2019 Bluestone Festival p 3 Welcome to the 23rd Annual Bluestone Festival

This is the 23rd Bluestone Blues Festival . The name of ‘Bluestone’ came from the walls of the Inverleigh Hotel where our first Festival was held in 1996. It was an amazing event that is still talked about today and the music from that Bluestone is still played. It brings back memories of some- thing special. Since then, Bluestone has continued to present top blues music, a fun atmosphere and good memories to the many thousands who have attended over the years. Bluestone has two aims—to showcase local blues talent and to bring blues players to an appreciative audience in the Geelong region. This year we have some top local tal- ent — Blue Heat (sorry Warrnambool, they’re based here now!) and Wayne Jury 4. From further afield we have Dollar 20 Blues Band, Simon Kinny-Lewis, P J O’Brien Band. We also have the two bands going to the International Blues Challenge: Rhythm X Revival and The McNaMarr Project. Check them, and the others, on pages 6 - 8. We aim to enjoy the blues and ensure it continues on. All the best for 2019 to our members, sponsors, friends and family, now for the music! Julie Fletcher SHBC President A Few Friendly Reminders You must keep your wristband on at all times. If you do not have your wristband on, you will not be able to be served food or drinks and will not be admitted into the festival area. There’s a limited range of hot food available at the food area, thanks to Bannockburn Li- ons Club. There are also hot and cold drinks including beer, spirits, soft drinks and iced water for sale. There is a total ban on open fires and BBQs because of the extreme fire danger, as the district is very dry. This also includes fireworks, as these can be very disturbing to local livestock. Also, remember to butt out cigarettes properly. Parents, please keep an eye on your children. We don’t want them getting into trouble or spoiling the occasion for others. Strictly no fires, no glass, no BYO and no dogs. Please try to keep the area clean and dispose of all your rubbish and cans in the correct, marked bins supplied for this purpose and remove any campsite rubbish when leaving.. If you need first aid due to accident or medical condition, the first aid area is near the food and drinks area (see back page map). If you need any other help or want information about the club, Sleepy Hollow Blues Club Committee members will try to help you. Look for the people with the blue Committee tags. The last reminder is to have fun and enjoy the Festival. Don’t drive home if you have had too much to drink, sleep the night. There is plenty of camping area. IN CASE OF FIRE OR OTHER EMERGENCY PLEASE MOVE DIRECTLY TO THE OVAL

Dollar 20 Blues Band The Dollar 20 Blues Band formed in 2010 from a humble beginning in an asbestos clad shed next to a freeway in Melbourne’s north. The band’s name came during the first practice session when a group of kids listening from a nearby park pushed a pocket full of small change through the holes in the shed’s cracked and broken walls. One dollar twenty in small change: not a huge paying first gig, but a good sign right from the very start. The band has gone on to bigger things since then but the unpretentious beginnings remain intrinsic to their music. Their music varies from a wide range of originals to traditional and classic blues tunes, the result is an assortment of hip -shaking, foot tapping, and head rocking blues and roots. The wealth of musical experience is astounding and seemingly endless. Band mem- bers have paid their dues within Australia’s music scene and bring a new and fresh approach to music that effortlessly crosses all boundaries and generations. After several changes in the original line -up the band now has a strong heritage from The Giants, with three original ex -Giants mem- bers in guitarist and harp player Bill Featherstone, keyboardist Martin Coogan and bass player Stuart McElvenny. Added to these three players are drummer Graham Barr and guitarist Paul Madden. The result is that the Dollar 20 Blues Band now has four great vocalists and a shared mission to bring their music to as many blues fans as possible. The result is that the Dollar 20 Blues Band now has four great vocalists and a shared mission to bring their music to as many blues fans as possible.

Simon Kinny-Lewis Band Simon Kinny -Lewis is one of the new breed of blues guitarists making his mark world- wide. He takes the audience with him on a seismic journey of compelling blues guitar – along with a voice that (guitarist Toto, Michael Jackson, Ringo Starr) de- scribes as being similar to American blues star Joe Bonnamassa. Simon’s Melbourne band is comprised of Winston Galea (drums),Liam Kealy (keys) and Peter Neagoe (bass). Simon’s own original brand of contemporary blues and rock has created a loyal fan -base of guitar enthusiasts around the globe. He has performed and recorded with highly regard- ed musicians such as Chris Cain, Anton Davidyants, Nate Ginsberg (Herbie Hancock’s band), Christian Howes, Dwayne Pate (Robben Ford Band), Simeon Cain (Henry Rollins Band) and many more. He has produced five albums to date with his most recent “Catfish” reaching #1 on Blues and Roots Airplay Charts. (Simon’s first acoustic album that also fea- tures Australian harmonica great Chris Wilson). The new album “Bad Whiskey” is due for release in July 2018 and includes a spe- cial guest appearance from Brett Garsed on slide guitar. ( Band). 2017 ended on a high note with a string of shows in California with US Blues legend Chris Cain after Chris invited Simon to visit the US. June 2018 saw the band return to the Golden State for more shows, a recording session in San Jose, plus an appearance at The 20th Julian Blues Festival near San Diego.

Catfish Voodoo Consisting of "Wailin'" Aaron Gillett (harmonica), Julian James (vocals, guitar), Benny "Chicken -Shack" Gerrard (drums), "Juke -Joint" Jordan Hyde (bass) and Luke "Mad Dog" Miller (guitar), Catfish Voodoo keeps their sound deeply rooted in the early 1950’s Chicago -blues scene. Their sets consist of their own material and original takes of classic blues songs such as; Mojo Workin’, Smokestack Lightnin’, and a high energy, crowd pleasing version of the John Lee Hooker classic, Boogie Chillun’. They are known for playing their barrel -house blues set through many of Melbourne’s premier live music venues such as the Espy, Revolver, St. Andrews Hotel, Cornish Arms, Royal Standard Hotel (for the MBAS), Radcliffes (Echuca -Moama Winter Blues Festival) and a show at the Avoca Cup country races as the live band for the day, as well as playing many private functions and local events. Catfish Voodoo has a high energy, low -down boogie sound. Staying true to the masters of classic Chicago blues, Catfish Voodoo’s live shows and studio work are sure to delight and impress even the most discerning blues enthusiast. Catfish Voodoo released their 6 track EP “....down the road” in 2010, and followed up with a self titled LP in August 2011, both to favourable reviews and healthy local radio play. In 2016 they released a live album, “Live at Way out West Blues Club.”

Blue Heat Blue Heat is an exciting band from Warrnambool, led by guitarist, singer and song- writer Marco Goldsmith. They are one of the hottest blues bands on the Australian scene, with a big strong sound and an all -original repertoire. They played their debut gig at the 1991 Balla- rat Blues Festival. In 1995 Marco Goldsmith won Best Male Artist and their first album “Marooned” won ‘Australian Blues Album of the Year'. In 1996, their sec- ond album “Irresistible Behaviour” (remastered 2011 with bonus tracks) also won the award whilst Blue Heat won the 'Australian Blues Band of the Year'. In May 1997, they achieved nationwide acclaim after a memorable night supporting B.B. King. Blue Heat is a guaranteed festival highlight. After performing for more than 20 years, members from the original Marco Goldsmith’s Blue Heat road -tested a 5 piece line -up in 2013 and it rocked! They were so happy in fact that they decided to proceed in that for- mat. Blue Heat is: Barry Galbraith (drums) Graeme Galbraith (bass) Marco Goldsmith (guitar, vocals) Brad Harrison (sax, vocals) Paul Lemke (trombone, backing vocals) The juggernaut which is Blue Heat delivers world -class Rhythm and Blues.

Louis King and the Liars Klub Louis King was born Tommy McEwan and grew up in Glas- gow, Scotland, raised on a diet of Motown, Soul and blues before moving to Australia as a teenager in 1972. He has performed at all the major festivals in the country, including the East Coast Festival in 5 times, as well as Bridgetown, Cairns and Broadbeach Blues festivals. Louis King has also toured Europe 5 times, performing at the prestigious Great British Blues Festival. In 2013 he again toured Europe and was a featured artist at The Screamin’ festival in Barce- lona, as well as the famous Kwadedamme Blues festival. His 5 Original CD’s have gained awards from ARIA Nominations, to ’s ‘Album of the Year’. Louis’s songs Have been covered by artists, Including New Orleans favourite son Rockin’ Doopsie Junior and The Flattrackers, and even Doug Mulray! They have also been included in the soundtrack of a Hollywood movie and ‘Underbelly’ The band has been the featured support act for B.B King, Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan and Screamin’ J Hawkins. His music is a dangerous mix of Blues and Rockabilly songwriting with a stage act that is a mixture of an outback roadhouse and a Glasgow Pub fight!

Wayne Jury 4 The Wayne Jury 4 are essentially a blues band, but like the personal- ities in the band the idea of being pigeonholed is about as much fun as having a Tasmanian devil in your sleeping bag. They obviously enjoy playing together, despite not doing that a lot. They feed off each other’s energy and share a synergy that is infectious. “We just want to feel the energy in the music, get the best out of every song and share it with people … dance, sing and do your thing. Wayne Jury has been called on by some of Australia’s most iconic rock bands to front their gigs when they’ve been missing a lead sing- er. He has played thousands of gigs all over Australia, including opening for blues greats Robert Cray, , Canned Heat, BB King, Chris Cain, and Buddy Guy. Sandy Brady has been a professional upright and electric bassist for almost half of her life. Sandy has performed alongside many well -known blues musicians. John Parry (JP) is known as ‘Mr. Reliable’, one of the most solid, feel good drummers in the business. JP and Sandy Brady together are the ‘lockdown’ rhythm section. The groove is set and it’s ‘take no prisoners. Troy Love plays with heart and passion because he knows no other way. He can squeeze emotion out of his guitar like his life de- pended on it. Troy gives all he’s got to everything he does.

Rhythm X Revival Rhythm X Revival is an energetic rockin’ country blues band formed through songwriting and the friendship of duo John -Luke Shelley and Johnny Tesoriero. P J O’Brien Band PJ O’Brien knows how to get a Blues party started. His blistering fretwork has been turning heads from Perth to Memphis, Chicago, Austin, London, Singapore and back again. Driven by PJ’s fat and funky guitar and accompanied by his smooth, soul -filled vocals, PJ’S music is receiving widespread acclaim. 2018-2019 Bluestone Festival p 9 Camping Caution!

In 2014 Katie Broadbent was killed by her partner's best friend, 24-year-old Westmere man John Forbes, when he reversed over her tent — in which she was sleeping — at a fes- tival in Rochester. It wasn't until three hours later when her boyfriend found her body in the tent, but Forbes had no memory of what happened. The trial consequently saw Forbes, who was found to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the incident, jailed for four years over the death. The incident has given rise to calls for an investigation into how music festivals are organ- ised and executed, with special focus being paid to the way in which camping areas and arrangements are handled. At Bluestone, we need you to be aware of where you are parking your vehicle, placing your tent or swag and where those around you are setting up. People may arrive at the festival late at night. Park cars on the edge of the oval if possible . Please look around you and think!
