Making a Change in Inclusive Education in Albania
Making a change in inclusive education in Albania Tirana, July -December 2016 UNICEF Albania Author: Lediona Asabella 1 “My biggest dream was to go to the same school with my brother and cousin “ Student in the inclusive school “ Androkli Kostallari. Tirana “ Introduction Under the UNICEF CEE/CIS regional initiative on Inclusive education, and following the strategic directions of the Ministry of Education and Sports National Preuniversity Strategy (hereafter, MoES), UNICEF Albania has engaged with a national NGO, Institute of Public opinion Studies (hereafter ISOP), MoES, directorates of education in the districts and National Institute for Development of Education(hereafter IDE) in the planning and implementation of the initiative called “Facing the challenges of inclusive education in Albania”. The 15-months-extensive- commitment1 has resulted in a new and more comprehensive understanding of Inclusive education in Albania, in teachers provided with an ‘inner map’ to help guide them on the path towards inclusive education and in new policies related to inclusive education teaching in the country impacting the in-service and pre-service teacher training in Albania. This paper explains UNICEF Albania current work on inclusive education and offers perspectives for the period beyond 2016. The primary aim is to provide UNICEF in Albania as well as other partners interested in inclusive education with a concise description undertaken by the project interventions to undertake concrete, positive actions towards inclusion. This paper gives suggestions for future possibilities and potential limitations, for future programing for MoES and UNICEF as well as other organizations and professionals working in the field of education and inclusion. -
Fan S. Noli's Liturgical Translations Into Albanian and English
1 FAN S. NOLI’S LITURGICAL TRANSLATIONS INTO ALBANIAN AND ENGLISH By Rev. Fr. Foti Tsitsi 2 1. INTRODUCTION Fan Stylian Noli (1882-1965) published around fifty books. Half of his publications are translations of liturgical texts from Greek into Albanian and English, including musical settings in both languages, a translation of the New Testament into English for liturgical use, and a complete translation of the New Testament and the Psalms into English. In addition, Noli arranged and translated into Albanian and English two catechism books. All of this liturgical translation work of Metropolitan Archbishop Theofan Noli will be the subject of this paper, especially the ideological nuances that these translations contain. After the 1940s, hundreds of articles and books were published about Noli, and many authors are still investigating different aspects of his life and work: his language, poetry, translations of world literature, historical works, politics, etc. Noli’s Albanian translations of liturgical texts, used today in Albania and in the United States, are the only ones that exist. Even the recent liturgical publications of the Orthodox Church in Albania are mere adaptations of Noli’s original translations. His English publications of the Liturgy and the New Testament are still used by most of the Albanian Orthodox Churches in the United States and in some other parishes in different jurisdictions. While there is a large bibliography regarding Noli’s life and secular works, it is nearly impossible to find even one work pertaining to his religious publications in either Albanian or English. Furthermore, there is no work about Noli as a Metropolitan and leader of the Church in Albania and in the United States. -
American Protestantism and the Kyrias School for Girls, Albania By
Of Women, Faith, and Nation: American Protestantism and the Kyrias School For Girls, Albania by Nevila Pahumi A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Professor Pamela Ballinger, Co-Chair Professor John V.A. Fine, Co-Chair Professor Fatma Müge Göçek Professor Mary Kelley Professor Rudi Lindner Barbara Reeves-Ellington, University of Oxford © Nevila Pahumi 2016 For my family ii Acknowledgements This project has come to life thanks to the support of people on both sides of the Atlantic. It is now the time and my great pleasure to acknowledge each of them and their efforts here. My long-time advisor John Fine set me on this path. John’s recovery, ten years ago, was instrumental in directing my plans for doctoral study. My parents, like many well-intended first generation immigrants before and after them, wanted me to become a different kind of doctor. Indeed, I made a now-broken promise to my father that I would follow in my mother’s footsteps, and study medicine. But then, I was his daughter, and like him, I followed my own dream. When made, the choice was not easy. But I will always be grateful to John for the years of unmatched guidance and support. In graduate school, I had the great fortune to study with outstanding teacher-scholars. It is my committee members whom I thank first and foremost: Pamela Ballinger, John Fine, Rudi Lindner, Müge Göcek, Mary Kelley, and Barbara Reeves-Ellington. -

DOI: https://doi.org/10.24197/her.22.2020.383-413 Abstract: This paper outlines the importance of translation activity for the Albanian culture beginning from the earliest period, as a driving force and forerunner of the Albanian National Awakening and identity, to the latest developments related to the quantity of translations, as well as their quality, peacebuilding in Kosovo and the use of translation for subversive propaganda. Translation, along with religion and masterpieces of world literature, brought different alphabetic scripts, many foreign words and, despite the adversarial approach by the Church and ruling authorities, contributed to the codification efforts, language purification and the coining of new words. Common expressions and folklore were collected and found their way into translated texts, now serving as grounds to call for retranslation. Keywords: Translation, national awareness, folklore, standardisation, tolerance. Resumen: Este artículo trata de describir la importancia de la actividad de traducción para la cultura albanesa desde el primer período, como fuerza impulsora y precursora del despertar nacional y la identidad albanesa, hasta los últimos desarrollos relacionados con la calidad y cantidad de la traducción, la construcción de la paz en Kosovo y el uso de la traducción como propaganda subversiva. -

August 2013 e-ISSN: 1857-8187 p-ISSN: 1857-8179 Research paper Linguistics Keywords: monolingual dictionaries, Short Description of Albanian Lexicography bilingual dictionaries, headword, lexicography, development. University of Tirana. Faculty of Foreign Languages Ergys Bezhani English Department Abstract This paper aims at providing a short description on the historical development of the Albanian lexicography. At the very beginning there were some very simple bilingual dictionaries which mainly served to the day to day communication of Albanian citizens in the USA. At a later stage were published some more professional monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. The development of lexicography as a separate branch helped these compilers in increasing the quality and the expectations of their works. The first very important dictionary of the Albanian lexicography is the monolingual “Albanian Dictionary” compiled by Kostandin Kristoforidhi. This dictionary was followed by some other publications, which with the passing of time, were improved from the lexicological point of view. The bank of headwords was carefully chosen by the respective authors, by reflecting the continuous development of the Albanian language during the years. For the learners of foreign languages bilingual dictionaries are more useful than the monolingual ones. The work of Stuart Mann “A Historical Albanian-English Dictionary” is of a later date, when the Albanian language had many bilingual dictionaries. This paper analyses it into a more detailed approach. Headings Taking into consideration that the lexicology, as a branch, was properly developed only during the last decades of the XX century. Bearing in mind that the majority of bilingual dictionaries, in all Indo-European languages, were English-Latin, French-Latin, German-Latin, Albanian could not have been an exception. -
