Making its first appearance at auction, Composition Nord - Art Constructif (pictured above, estimate $1,500,000 - 2,000,000), has been in the same private European collection for the past 55 years. It has been exhibited occasionally in prominent exhibitions and biennials, including the Venice Biennale XXVII in 1956 and the Bienal de São Paulo in 1959, as well as at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa in 1970. The artist is currently the focus of a major retrospective exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, on view through mid-February 2016. Created while the artist lived in Paris at the height of his career, Composition Nord (oil on board laid on Masonite, 31 ¼ x 23 5/8 in, signed and dated ’31) serves as a virtual blueprint for understanding Torres- García’s theory of “Universal Constructivism,” his idiosyncratic vision of art.     Exhibition: Fire under the Ashes. From Picasso to Basquiat 5 May – 28 August 2005 Organized by: Institut Valencià d’Art Modern IVAM Curator: Kosme de Barañano ________________ The exhibition is based on the review of primitive art, or children’s art, carried out by numerous artists since Surrealism, which shaped the iconography of avant-garde art, both in Europe and in America, with respect to the human figure, the face and graffiti, in Constructivism, Art Brut, Informalism and the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. The selection of works in the exhibition traces the evolution and development of that imagery – that fire – in modern art through the work of such acclaimed artists as Jean Dubuffet, Michel Haas, Germaine Richier, Gaston Chaissac, Pablo Picasso, Joaquín Torres-García and Jean-Michel Basquiat. To accompany the show, the IVAM has published a catalogue, illustrated with colour reproductions of the items exhibited, together with texts by the curator of the exhibition, Kosme de Barañano, and the poets Jaime Siles and Guillermo Carnero. The title of the exhibition comes from some words quoted by Jan Krugier when recalling a visit to Rothko: “Rothko struck me as having something shamanistic about him – there was a truth in him that he had to express. I remember going to see him once 1 late at night in his studio in New York.     67 Universal Constructivism and Politics: Torres-García in Conversation with Siqueiros Gianmarco Visconti This essay seeks to extend the discussion of 20th-century Modernism in a Latin American context by juxtaposing the work of Uruguay's Joaquín Torres-García with the radical leftist politics of the Mexican Muralist movement. As part of this argument, the difference between textual and visual language is discussed as well as the role of monuments in the creation of history and cultural identity. Finally, it concludes with a brief talk on the visual culture of Fascist Italy and the issue of mapping as it pertains to nationalistic sentiment. Being one of the most aggressive artists of the Mexican muralist movement, David Alfaro Siqueiros was able to capture many of the social and political concerns weighing on the minds of the Latin American art community during the 1920s and 30s. In particular, he dealt with the question of how an artist could be modern and yet distinctly Latin American at the same time. For Siqueiros this issue was heavily tied in with the physical production of art and its being made public: “We want to create an art which will be physically capable of serving the public through its material form.”1 Changes to the institution of art and to Mexican society were equal to him and could be achieved by the same means: confrontation. Siqueiros consistently encouraged artists to challenge the capitalist status quo that he observed in the Americas and in Europe. The art world, dominated by European tradition, had stagnated in his opinion and had become a study in repression and alienation: in “Towards a Transformation of the Plastic Arts,” an article from 1934, he stated “we must use new, dialectic forms, rather than dead, scholarly, mechanical ones,”2 which was an echo of a similar declaration he made in his 1922 manifesto wherein he rejects “the so-called easel art and all such art that springs from ultra-intellectual circles, for it is essentially aristocratic.” Thus, mural making became the perfect medium for Siqueiros’ rebellion.

    I PAINT MY REALITY Surrealism in Latin America Through Spring 2021 The avant-garde Surrealist movement emerged in France in the wake of World War I and spread globally as artists and art works traveled, and ideas circulated through art journals and mass media. Dreams, psychoanalysis, automatism (creating without conscious thought), collage, assemblage and chance were among the methods the Surrealists used to tap into the unconscious mind and stimulate the imagination. The European Surrealists embraced their Latin American colleagues, who nevertheless expressed ambivalence about the movement. Mexican artist Frida Kahlo famously refuted being labeled as a Surrealist, stating that she never painted dreams, instead asserting, “I painted my own reality,” while Uruguayan Joaquin Torres-Garcia advocated for a modern art that was not beholden to European modern art. Latin America’s complex history, magical landscapes, indigenous cultures, archeological sites, mythologies, migrations, and European and African religious traditions shaped these artists’ reality. The rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s as well as the Spanish Civil War and World War II shifted the focus of Surrealism to the United States and Latin America, where many of the European artists sought refuge. These artists’ proximity to each other promoted friendships that were especially fruitful during this period and in the post-war years. While many of the exiled European artists who lived in the United States during the war returned home afterwards, those in Latin America and in Mexico in particular, tended to remain there for the rest of their lives. This exhibition is drawn exclusively from NSU Art Museum’s Latin American collection, including promised gifts from Fort Lauderdale collectors Stanley and Pearl Goodman.

    Joaquín Torres-García b. 1874 Montevideo, Uruguay - d. 1949 Montevideo, Uruguay When Torres-García arrived in Montevideo on April 30, 1934 after forty-three years of absence, Torres-García told the press that he had returned to his native country of Uruguay in order to "develop a wide range of activities, to lecture, to teach courses, to achieve... on walls what I have already achieved on canvas,... to create in Montevideo a movement that will surpass the art of Paris." These lofty ambitions were achieved through the creation of his world famous workshop, the Taller Torres-García, where he taught his theory of Universal Constructivism to future generations of Latin American artists. Before returning to Uruguay, Torres-García had arrived at the concept of Universal Constructivism after a long development during which his painting evolved from Mediterranean classicism through periods of Vibrationism, Cubism, and Fauvism. A truly global artist, Torres-García lived in Spain, New York, Italy, and Paris, where his theories and aesthetic style culminated into his characteristic incorporation of symbols located in a geometric grid based on the golden section. The uniqueness of Torres' proposal consisted of his incorporation of essential elements of indigenous American art into the basic principles of European constructivism and geometric abstraction.     Other Modernities: Latin American Art, Fall 2017 ARH 341N / LAS 327 Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays 2:00–3:00pm, DFA 2.204 Instructor: Professor Adele Nelson Email: [email protected] Office: DFA 2.524 Office hours: Monday, 3:00–4:15pm, Thursday, 1:45–3:30pm, or by appointment Course description: This course examines the various currents of modern art that developed in Latin America from 1900 to 1945, with particular emphasis placed on the artists and art movements of South America and Mexico. Discussions will focus on understanding the distinct social, political, and historical contexts of artistic production in various Latin American centers and how artists conceived of their work in relationship to local and international debates about modernity, modernism, the avant-garde, nationalism, identity, and colonialism. We will take advantage of the University’s rich collections of Latin American art, including those of the Benson Latin American Collection and Blanton Museum of Art. Some questions we will consider: What strategies did visual artists develop to assert their modernity from/in a region their contemporaries often considered a cultural backward? How did artists represent racial difference and emerging national identities in their work? How did art challenge, examine, and/or relate to the epochal societal and political changes underfoot in the period we will study, including the aftermath of the abolition of slavery in the mid- and late nineteenth century, the Mexican Revolution and World War I in the first decade of the twentieth century, World War II, and the urban transformation and industrialization of the region into the middle of the twentieth century?
