Hence, computer systems that can adapt to the user by displaying a familiar socio-cultural identity are expected to raise the acceptance within certain contexts and target groups dramatically. Although the currently prevailing statistical paradigm has made possible major achievements in many areas of natural language processing, the applicability of the available methods is generally limited to major languages / standard varieties, to the exclusion of dialects or varieties that substantially differ from the standard. While there are considerable initiatives dealing with the development of language resources for minor languages, and also reliable methods to handle accents of a given language, i.e., for applications like speech synthesis or recognition, the situation for dialects still calls for novel approaches, methods and techniques to overcome or circumvent the problem of data scarcity, but also to enhance and strengthen the standing that language varieties and dialects have in natural language processing technologies, as well as in interaction technologies that build upon the former. What made us think that a such a workshop would be a fruitful enterprise was our conviction that only joint efforts of researchers with expertise in various disciplines can bring about progress in this field.

    Abstracts and Biographies in Alphabetical Order by Author’s Surname Paola Baseotto (Insubria University, Italy) Prophecy, Vision and Human Flourishing in Spenser’s “Faerie Queene” I will discuss Edmund Spenser’s masterful use of the literary, scriptural and philosophical implications of the topoi of prophecy and vision in The Faerie Queene. The poem is characterized by a profound “orientative impact,” to use the terminology of art psychology, which expands “the observer’s awareness of meanings, implications, and even potentialities for action.” (Hans Kreitler) I argue that Spenser’s narratives of prophecy and vision stimulate aesthetic peak experiences in readers who are offered philosophical and ethical lessons about the meaning of human flourishing, i.e., the unfolding of a well- functioning, virtuous personality. Spenser’s texts provide interesting illustrations of views of the function and meaning of rapture and revelation by modern positive psychologists such as Abraham Maslow and Mihály Csíkszentmihályi. Paola Baseotto holds a PhD from the University of Reading (UK) and teaches English at Insubria University, Italy. Her research interests centre mainly on the works of Edmund Spenser and on the theological, legal and medical treatises of the Renaissance period.     October at the Museum! October brings Family History Month and Hallowe'en! This month, we will be hosting multiple spooky events to honor the Celtic Festival of Samhain of course, but did you know that October is also Family History Month? Lisa Walsh Dougherty, our resident genealogist, is available in the museum on the last Wednesday of every month to answer your questions, or help you solve family riddles. But this article has lots of helpful places to start your search if you are beginning to trace your family roots. There has never been a better time to research Irish family history. A revolution in access to Irish genealogical records has taken place over the past decade. From being a laggard in providing online record transcripts, Ireland has become one of the world leaders. Some credit must go to competition in the marketplace to meet researchers' demands. But most of the change has been driven by the Irish and Northern Irish public sectors. Their increased awareness of the huge numbers who descend from emigrants, and who cherish that historic connection, has had a dramatic effect. Politicians and public servants now accept that it should be as easy as possible for members of the Irish diaspora to unearth the historical detail of the connection, their family history. Publicly-funded websites such as IrishGenealogy.ie, genealogy.nationalarchives.ie, askaboutireland.ie, databases.dublincity.ie and nidirect.gov.uk/proni have gone about supplying the tools to make that possible. The result is that most people of Irish origin can now take their family back to the second quarter of the 19th century quickly and easily and, for the most part, without payment.
