Drillbit taylor parents guide Continue DRILLBIT TAYLOR (2008) (Owen Wilson, Nate Hartley) (PG-13) KVIK TAKE: Comedy: Three freshmen hire a homeless man who claims he can protect them from a high school bully who has been terrorizing them. THIS should be the biggest event of their lives, but the first day of high school for best friends Wade (NATE HARTLEY) and Ryan (TROY GENTILE), who now wants to be known as T-Dog, turns out to be a nightmare. And that's because Wade decides to step in and tell senior bullies Filkins (ALEX FROST) and Ronnie (JOSH PECK) to stop picking on diminutive freshman Emmit (DAVID DORFMAN). Thus, Filkins and his accomplice make the three boys a target for the continuation of the pursuit. Too embarrassed to tell his parents and unable to get a school principal (STEPHEN ROOT) to believe his story - especially since Filkins was all cheated that he was a good kid - Wade and Ryan decided they should hire a bodyguard for protection. After a round of interviews that go nowhere, they end up hiring former Army man Drillbit Taylor (OWEN WILSON) without realizing that he's really a homeless man who will say anything to get what he needs or desires. This includes enough money to get him to Canada, but his fellow homeless friend, Don (DANNY McBRIDE), convinces him to stay because getting the boys' trust will also get them access to their homes and possessions in it. He is distracted, however, by English teacher Lisa (LESLIE MANN), with whom he leads a heated affair. From that point on, and as Wade finds himself startled by fellow Brooke (VALERIE TIAN), the boys hope that the pointers and training Drillbit has put will allow them to cope with the bullies who terrorize them. WILL THE KIDS WANT TO SEE THIS? Preteens may not be interesting, but older teens and especially young teenage boys are likely to be, especially since they might view it as a PG-13 version of the same material found in Superbad. WHY MPAA RATED IT: PG-13 For crude sexual references throughout, strong bullying, language, links to drugs and partial nudity. CAST AS ROLE MODELS: OWEN WILSON plays a homeless army deserter who is up against boys in hireding him as their supposedly highly skilled bodyguard. Although he initially does it for money, as well as access to items in Wade's house that he and his buddies can steal, he eventually has a change of heart and wants to help them. He uses profanity. TROY GENTILE plays a chubby freshman in high school who, along with Wade and angers Filkins and Ronnie. He's a bit of a smart aleck, uses profanity, and is mean-ed and demeaning to Emmit. NATE HARTLEY plays his best friend, friend, a child growing up in a family filled with imperious stepfather and step brothers. Defending Emmit, he draws the wrath of bullies and then hires Drillbit as a defense. He then tries to use Drillbit's teachings and tips to deal with his tormentors, all the while in love with Brooke. DAVID DORFMAN plays their much smaller classmate who snaps at two and forces his friendship on them. ALEX FROST plays a leading bully whose parents live abroad, thereby allowing him the opportunity to throw parties in his home when not fooling the principal and other adults into thinking he is a good child, all while he loves bullying and tormenting others. He uses profanity and fights boys as well as Drillbit. LESLIE MANN plays an English teacher at the school who takes instant sympathy for Drillbit and then continues the sexual relationship with him, including at school. VALERIE TIAN plays a girl who attracts the romantic attention of Wade. DANNY McBride plays a homeless friend of Drillbit, who convinces him to play along as the boys' bodyguard to access Wade's home and his possessions. When Dilbit changes his heart, Don and his buddies rob Wade's place. JOSH PECK plays Filkins' partner in bullying, with an equally bad attitude. OUR WORLD TO PARENTS: Here's a brief summary of the content found in this PG-13 rated comedy. Profanity consists of at least 1 possible f word and 9 s words, while other expletives and colorful phrases are also pronounced. Sexually related dialogue and innuendo are present, while behind-screen sex is implied (with a brief fooling around in advance, and adjusting clothes afterwards - a lot of this happens at school behind closed doors). The man's bare butt is seen several times as he showers outdoors completely nude, and some teens are seen lying in bikinis. Different characters fight or hit others (some comedy are based, some are not), and these scenes (especially those associated with bullying) can be disturbing for viewers sensitive to such issues. There's some scatological humor (along with a chopped-up figure), while some bloody noses are present after the fighting. All kinds of bad relationships are present, especially from bullies and their actions, while there are many behaviors that can be tempting for some children to emulate (most of his bullying Some strenuous family material is present, and some drinking is happening, including teenagers at a party, while various drug links are made (but there is no use). ALCOHOL OR DRUG USE Driver gives Drillbit money on the street but tells him it's not for marijuana or rye whiskey, repeating that it's not for pot. One of Drillbit's homeless friends holds a sign that appears to be drug-related. Drillbit states that it is going to Canada, where the beer is twice as big. The term crack-head is used, but not for drug users. Not that it's literal, Ryan asks Drillbit, are you high? We see a beer bottle of Wade's stepfather. Drillbit has wine while in the bathroom. Wade's mom is concerned that he's doing drugs (because of the way he acts about being bullied as well as his training with Drillbit), and his stepfather asks if he's sure he's not high, commenting on how Wade was going for food as if he were munchies. Drillbit opens wine for Lisa and herself. On finding his household belongings in disarray, Wade's stepfather wondered if he was tall and if he and his friends had a marijuana party. High school students drink what is supposedly beer and/or other alcohol at a party Filkins throws. BLOOD/GORE During a montage of bullying, Filkins and Ronnie capture Wade and Ryan as they use neighboring urinals. Then they turn them to each other, so that their urine gets into each other (we don't see that part). After the bullies scare Emmit when they see all three boys walk down the hallway with big wet spots on the front of their pants. Later, Filkins grabs Emmit by the urinal and picks him up, and we see the boy's urine stream sprayed around the room. Filkins punches Wade in the face, lightly bloodied his nose and leaving him with a black eye. Once hit, Drillbit has a bit of a bloody nose and we hear a crackling sound as he tries to put it back in place. About some robbers Emmit tells Wade that one of them urinated in the kitchen. Drillbit catches a samurai sword thrown at the boys and we see his little finger go off (without blood) and then the car drives over this torn digits in the street. THE UNSOUTH/BAS ATTITUDE Drillbit lies to most everyone about who and what he is, including three boys. He agrees to be their bodyguard for a fee (not knowing what he's doing and lying about past clients), as well as being able to take things from Wade's house and then sell them to a pawnshop (an idea proposed and then carried by Don). He also misleads Lisa and begins a sexual affair with her, despite knowing that he is the kind of guy she despises (she thinks he's a doctor and a substitute high school teacher). Seeing Wade's room, his stepfather looks disgusting, saying: How about some chickens on the walls?, and that room is like a nerd's paradise. Ryan is talking to his father on the phone, we understand his doesn't live there, and he tells his mom: He's a piece sh-t anyway (seemingly more to calm her down than actually feeling that way). Various students make fun of Ryan and Wade when they inadvertently wear the same shirt on the first day of school. Filkins and Ronnie have a bad attitude as they are bullies, with the former almost psychotic in his behavior. This includes beating up young/smaller students, and even striking drillbit (when he is considered a substitute teacher). Seeing Ryan and Wade in matching shirts, Filkins calls them Siamese homosexuals, bitches, and he and Ronnie force the boys together in the same shirt, threatening to kill them if they kill him.
