Volume – 25 Number – 3 September to November 2018 Edition Steam locomotive 3801 (4-6-2) was operated by the New South Wales Government Railways between 1943 and 1976. It is arguably Australia’s most famous steam locomotive, being the only one to have visited all main line states and territories. The 38 Class numbered 30. The first 5 units, with the streamlined design, were built by Clyde Engineering, Granville, New South Wales. The other 25 units were built, semi-streamlined, at the New South Wales Eveleigh (even numbers) and Cardiff (odd numbers) Locomotive Workshops. 3801 entered service on 22 January 1943 and worked the “Newcastle Flyer” for the first time on 23 February 1943 to express passengers to and from Sydney. 2018 celebrates the 75th anniversary of this iconic steam locomotive. The “What the Font” web-site cannot identify it. Art Deco fonts were all the rage for railways of that era - most notably Gill Sans, which was actually created for a railway—the LNER—by Eric Gill. The text illustrated above appears to be an attempt by the Victorian Railways printing works at North Melbourne to create its own font style. -

World Heritage Site – Kalka Shimla Railway an Introduction
WORLD HERITAGE SITE – KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY AN INTRODUCTION Ambala Division is the proud custodian of “WORLD HERITAGE SITE-KALKA SHIMLA RAILWAY”. The heritage status to KSR was awarded on 7th July, 2008 by UNESCO. Shimla (then spelt Simla) was settled by the British shortly after the first Anglo- Gurkha war and is located at 7,116 feet(2,169m) in the foothills of the Himalaya. By the 1830s, Shimla had already developed as a major base for the British. It became the summer capital of British India in 1864, and also the Headquarters of the British army in India. The Kalka- Shimla Railway was built to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the Indian rail system. “The Guinness Book of Rail facts & feats” records Kalka Shimla Railways as the greatest narrow gauge engineering in India. It is indeed true, construction of 103 tunnels (102 Existing) aggregating five miles and over 800 bridge in three years, that too in rough and hostile terrain was not an easy task. The Historic, approximate 111 years old KLK-SML Railway line which was opened for public traffic on 9th Nov.1903, became UNESCO Declared world Heritage Railway line, when it was conferred Heritage status on 10th July 2008 & listed under “Mountain Railways of India”. The idea of a Railway line to Shimla dates back to the introduction of Railways in India. It is said that in The DELHI GAZETTE, a correspondent in November, 1847 sketched the route of railway to Shimla with the estimates of the traffic returns etc in appropriate style. -

George Karpouzis was chief economist at RailCorp and is now a consultant economist Abstract The value of rail time is an important economic parameter in the evaluation of many rail infrastructure projects, translating travel time savings into dollars to compare against project costs. For Sydney, the value of onboard train travel time has been estimated through Stated Preference market research. Three surveys have been undertaken over the last two decades. The first was undertaken in 1992; the second in 2003 and the third in 2010. Between 1992 and 2010, the value of time has been updated by reference to movements in fare and latterly by reference to wage rate indices. -

Place Names of Casey and Cardinia Casey Cardinia Libraries have compiled this list of place names and their meanings from the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire and related neighbouring areas. It includes early schools in the area, as school names often reflected the fluidity of town names in the early days. They also indicate the locations of towns that no longer exist. Army Road, Pakenham Army Road marks the location of the Salvation Army boy's home established in Pakenham in 1900. It subsequently became a home for Girls and then an Old Men's Home. The home closed in the 1920s. The Army Road School. No.3847, operated intermittently form 1914 until 1947. (W, V) Avonsleigh John (J.W) and Anna wright owned a guesthouse called Avonsleigh House at the corner of Emerald-Macclesfield and Emerald Roads. The name was adopted in 1911. The area was previously known as East Emerald. See also Wright Railway Station. (C) Balla Balla The Balla Balla run on Rutherford inlet was taken up in 1839 by Robert Innes Allan. The meaning is uncertain. Ballarat is aboriginal for resting or camping place from balla 'resting on one's elbow; and arat 'place', so it could mean 'resting'. Another possible meaning is 'mud'.There is a Balla Balla river, near Whim Creek, in the Pilbara Western Australia which was first recorded by Surveyor, Alexander Forrest in 1879. The name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal word parla, from the Kariyarra language, meaning 'mud'. (B) Ballarto Road John Bakewell retained ownership of the Tooradin run in 1856 when his partnership with John Mickle and William Lyall dissolved. -
S Oldest Railway Roundhouse at Curzon Street Archaeological Site
HS2 uncovers world’s oldest railway roundhouse at Curzon Street archaeological site March 11, 2020 HS2 Ltd has unearthed what is thought to be the world’s oldest railway roundhouse at the construction site of its Birmingham Curzon Street station. The roundhouse was situated adjacent to the old Curzon Street station, which was the first railway terminus serving the centre of Birmingham and built during a period of great significance and growth for the city. Built to a design by the 19th century engineer Robert Stephenson, the roundhouse was operational on 12 November 1837 – meaning the recently discovered building is likely to predate the current titleholder of ‘world’s oldest’ in Derby by almost two years. HS2’s initial programme of trial trenching at Curzon Street revealed the remains of the station’s roundhouse, exposed toward the south-eastern corner of the site. The surviving remains include evidence of the base of the central turntable, the exterior wall and the 3ft deep radial inspection pits which surrounded the turntable. The 19th century station at Curzon Street is among the very earliest examples of mainline railway termini and the limited later development of the site means that any surviving remains of the early station represents a unique opportunity to investigate a major early railway terminus in its entirety. As the HS2 project heads towards Main Works Civils, the final archaeological excavations on the site are about to take place. HS2 will see the site become home to the first brand new intercity terminus station built in Britain since the since the 19th century. -
