H::tving recently submitted for general information an abstract of the Agricultural Statistics for the year 1858, shewing the aggregate results for the several counties and pastoral districts of the Colony, I now t..'tke leave to present some Supplementary Tables shewing in detail the cultivation, the classification of the holdings, with the distribution and description of the Live Stock · These Tables are replete with matter of the highest interest to the public, and are well deserving of an attentive analysis, considering especially the important position which ' agriculture is rapidly attaining in this country. It appears that in March, 1858, the additional quantity of purchased land of which the occupiers had entered into possession during the preceding twelve months, amounted to 580,785 acres. .As the population had increased during that period 58,871 persons, or from 410,766 to 469,637, it follows that for every individual added to the gross population very neurly ten acres were occupied for agricultural purposes, either of grazing or tillage. -

In the Shadow of Metropolitan Planning Local Plan Making in Melbourne, 1946 to 1976 Dr Benno Engels School of Global, Urban and Social Studies RMIT University Victoria, Australia [email protected] Melbourne has evolved and changed over time in response to the many challenges that this city has faced over the last century and a half. Some of this change was due to forces that lay beyond the control of those who governed it whereas other changes had been guided by local government acts and a handful of metropolitan level strategic plans. Largely absent from the historical narratives that have been written about the planning of Melbourne is what had happened to urban planning at the local level. This is a serious gap in our understanding of Melbourne’s historical urban development when it is remembered that local councils and shires had been charged with enforcing metropolitan strategy since 1955. It was at the local government level that the detailed strategic and statutory planning was undertaken but it was also here at the local level that a city’s capacity to respond to any newly emerging challenges were either expedited or stymied. In an attempt to shed some light on this much neglected facet of Melbourne’s urban planning history this paper proposes to investigate how much urban planning took place at the local level and what forms it took between 1944 to 1976, plus what factors may have impacted upon the local plan making process. Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Cowes to Stony Point Vehicle Ferry Business Case Will there be a 200m “exclusion zone” around the proposed Cowes vehicle ferry terminal and jetty? A 200 metre exclusion zone on either side of a jetty is not common practice in Victoria. An exclusion zone is typically used for vessel safety (including all craft such as jet skis). If one is applied it is often, but not always, applied to the area of the jetty where the vessel docks for safety reasons, depending on the needs of the vessels using it. Similarly, an exclusion zone is typically only applied to the berth (i.e. at the end of the jetty to the seaward side) not the remainder of the jetty or the beach. It is too soon to determine whether an exclusion zone will be needed for the berth, this would be decided in the approvals process and in consultation with the proponent ferry operator, if the project proceeds. Will pedestrians be able to walk along the beach under the Cowes terminal design being that is being considered? The project team is conscious of the importance of the beach as both a community and tourism asset and has aimed to provide project options that minimise shoreline impact. For this reason, the current design being considered for Cowes does have capacity for pedestrian access underneath the jetty along the beach, however this will be looked at in more detail should the project proceed to the detailed design phase. Detailed Design as well as all future steps will mean that the community has an additional opportunity to have direct input. -
