Work on Pimperne Neighbourhood Plan is moving Pimperne Parish Council ahead. In 1661, aged only 16, Sir William Portman’s Shaw. It was the last of the grand stately homes to be built in . fortunes were flourishing. He was made a Knight of the Bath and also became the MP for Taunton. In 1662 he purchased Bryanston, Dorset. The Rogers family had owned it for more than 200 years but had no male heirs. Sir William had a distant connection with Bryanston – his father had stayed there in 1644 as a guest when Charles I and part of his army were there. Bryanston became the Portman family’s main home until the 20th century.

He was a keen agricultural reformer; in Bryanston he built a huge range of new farm buildings, cut back into the hill to provide space for easy movement of materials, and introduced barn machinery and a saw mill powered by a steam engine. Other innovations included the introduction of crop rotation. By 1883 he was one of the richest men in England. He died in 1888 at
