ARAB TIMES, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places Books Pence memoir set for 2023 ‘Ask Iwata’ outlines vision for Nintendo TOKYO, April 13, (AP): Nintendo’s late president Satoru Iwata oversaw the video-game maker’s global growth as Super Mario and Pokemon became house- hold names. “Ask Iwata” was published after his death from cancer in 2015 at age 55. This month, VIZ Media is publishing the English translation of the book, which came out in Japanese in 2019. “On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer,” Iwata once said, one of many quotes that stand out in the book. Throughout the book, Iwata outlines his vision for Nintendo Co., which was to offer entertainment that everyone in the family could enjoy, regardless of age, gender and game playing skills. The company culture he fostered encouraged individual game creators, showing he was one of them at heart. Iwata was of a younger gen- eration than the vanguard of Japanese manufacturing lead- ers who have grabbed global attention: Soichiro Honda, founder of the automaker that carries his name; Momofuku Iwata Ando, inventor of the instant noodle; Akio Morita, who started Sony in a repair shop amid bombed out rubble. Kyoto-based Nintendo started out making tradition- al Japanese playing cards. Losben 1 Samantha Losben Handling Complex Media April 19, 2011 Assignment #1 Preserving Nintendo’s Duck Hunt In the mid 1980s, home video game systems began to revitalize after the game market crash of 1983 as a result of over saturation of the market. One of the leading game systems to emerge afterwards was the Japanese company Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Nintendo became a fan favorite with the introduction of popular games such as Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Paperboy, Donkey Kong, and many more. Several popular games were spin-offs of other games, for instance Donkey Kong led to a Super Mario Bros spin-off. Some games were sold as combinations, giving players an option to play different games on the same cartridge. One such popular “bonus game” was Duck Hunt, which was originally featured as a “B-Side” game on the original Super Mario Bros., which was often included with the original NES console. However, Duck Hunt was a unique game, which required additional hardware. Throughout the later part of the 20th century and early 21st century, gaming systems continued to advance. NES, along with its competitors such as Sony Playstation and Sega introduced several models and different generations. Nintendo introduced Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and most recently Nintendo Wii. Several classic and popular games from the original NES were re-introduced or re-imagined on the newer consoles; however, some games remain only a memory to the gaming fan base. Duck Hunt was a unique game that is physically attached to the original NES. As a unique gaming experience that was never truly Losben 2 replicated, Duck Hunt is a historic game experience that needs to be preserved.

With a half-dozen others from the University of Maryland Repertoire Orchestra, she founded GSO to achieve that dream. By the time of the ensemble’s first public performance in spring 2006, its size had quadrupled. Today GSO provides a musical and social outlet to 120 members. It is the world’s first college-level ensemble to draw its repertoire exclusively from the soundtracks of video games. The ensemble is entirely student run, which includes conducting and musical arranging. In February GSO had a special role at the Video Games Live perfor- mances at the Strathmore in Bethesda, Md. The National Philharmonic performed GSO’s arrangement of “Korobeiniki” from Tetris to two sold-out houses. Aside from its concerts, GSO also holds the “Deathmatch for Char- ity” every spring. All proceeds from this video game tournament benefit Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. GSO has also fostered the creation of two similar high school-level ensembles in Rockville, Md., and Damascus, Md. To begin with, unlike other scoring activities, game scoring depends on — in fact, it arguably is — software programming. The game scorer’s choices are thus first-and-foremost limited by available gaming technology, and the “programmability” of their musical ideas given that technology, at any given historical moment.

Among the few global Japanese home entertainment companies, Nintendo truly represents video game culture, and it is a well-known brand throughout the world. Our basic strategy is the expansion of the gaming population, which is to encourage as many people in the world as possible, regardless of age, gender or gaming experience, to embrace and enjoy playing video games. In 2004, Nintendo launched a handheld game device called Nintendo DS with dual screens including one touch screen, and has been expanding the diversity of consumers who enjoy video games by releasing applicable software titles in a range of genres that went beyond the then-current definition of games. In addition, Nintendo launched a home console game system called Wii in 2006, which lowered the threshold for people to play games by providing more intuitive gaming experiences with motion controllers. Nintendo offers home entertainment that enables family members and friends to have fun together in their living room and continuously strives to create an environment where everybody can enjoy video games.

MOTHER By Gabriel Bennett MOTHER/EarthBound Beginnings by Shigesato Itoi, HAL Laboratories, and Nintendo FADE IN: EXT. SPACE - NIGHT In the sparse light of the galaxy, a smooth, dark figure slides through the vacuum. Its shape is indeterminate, but menacing. It doesn’t move too quickly, but it doesn’t move slowly, either. A hatch opens up on its side, revealing a sort of antennae or satellite, which rotates mechanically until it finds what it’s aiming for. A light on the satellite flashes red as it recedes back into its hatch. More hatches open up on the ship’s back--a couple of thrusters pop out and begin sparking. After a moment of this, the thrusters come on, full blast. The ship moves much faster. Much like a wet bar of soap along the shower floor, the spaceship makes its way toward a familiar destination: a small blue dot in space orbiting a medium-sized star, accompanied by a few rocky, celestial neighbors. As the ship nears planet Earth, it comes to a smooth stop a few hundred-thousand miles away. As the spaceship has stopped, letters appear around the Earth. Using the planet as the letter "O", the word that is spelled out is "MOTHER", the title of this film. 2. INT. SPACESHIP - NIGHT The spaceship itself is fairly large in scope. All of the interior is a dark, smooth, bullet-gray color and texture. There are no signs of life on the ship as we tour its sleek, glossy halls and alien ship-board computer interface. Various lights blink and flash with alien lettering, and a few screens display technical diagnostics on the ship...as well as something else.
