  • Changes in Carabid Communities Along the Urbanization Gradient in Pyongyang (North Korea)
Muzeul Olteniei Craiova. Oltenia. Studii şi comunicări. Ştiinţele Naturii. Tom. 27, No. 1/2011 ISSN 1454-6914 CHANGES IN CARABID COMMUNITIES ALONG THE URBANIZATION GRADIENT IN PYONGYANG (NORTH KOREA) ŠUSTEK Zbyšek Abstract. The Carabids were pitfall trapped and individually collected in Pyongyang in 8 sites along the urbanization gradient from city margin to its centre in September – November 1986 and June – July 1990. Altogether 51 species were recorded, representing 14.7% of the species known to occur in Korea. The communities consisted exclusively of middle and small species (up to 20 mm). There was not found any species of the genus Carabus. Absence of non-flying species probably also results from very intensive agricultural exploitation of Pyongyang surrounding. Most species belonged to the genera Amara and Harpalus, characteristic also in Korean conditions for fields and orchards. The humid climate was reflected by the occurrence of several species of the genus Chlaenius even in the very city centre. Urbanisation gradient was manifested by decline on number of species, individuals and diversity index and by increase in relative representation of Transpalaearctic species Dolichus halensis, Pseudoophonus tardus and Ansisodactylus signatus. There can be defined some pairs or groups of vicariant species taking the same position in the (peri)urban ecosystems in East Asia and Europe: Platynus magnus x Platynus assimilis, Nebria coreica x Nebria brecollis. Pseudoophonus sinicus + P. simplicidens + P. coreanus + P. jureceki x P. calceatus, Curtonotus nitens x Curtonotus aulicus. Generally, the rules of forming the carabid communities in urban conditions in both parts of Palaearctis are very similar. Keywords: Carabids, communities, urban fauna, Pyongyang, North Korea.

  • Important Bird Areas of the Eu Importance in Latvia
    4. ES NOZĪMES PUTNIEM NOZĪMĪGĀS VIETAS LATVIJĀ | IMPORTANT BIRD AREAS OF THE EU IMPORTANCE IN LATVIA Skaits un platības | Numbers and size coverage In total, 71 Important Bird Areas have been identified in Latvia (Fig. 4-2, Table 4-1), 64 of those are inland territories with a total of 534,056 hectares comprising 8.3% of the country’s land surface. The other 7 areas are marine territories with a total coverage of ca. 339,470 hectares of the Baltic sea and Riga gulf waters. These marine sites are listed for information only, but they are not included in the site accounts. The individual area sizes of the inland IBAs range from 184 ha to 92,322 ha (on average 8345 ha), though most of them (56 sites, 88%) are below 15,000 ha. The number of IBAs in different area size groups is shown in Fig. 4-1. In comparison with the previous national IBA inventory (Raèinskis & Stîpniece 2000), the number of the inland IBAs has increased by 10 sites with their total extent increasing two-fold by 274,368 ha. All marine IBAs have remained unmodified, as the application of the BirdLife IBA criteria at sea are still under development. The long-term changes in number of IBAs in Latvia and their relative area size, compared to the country’s land surface, is illustrated in Fig. 4-3. • (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and Habitat Fragmentation
REVIEW Eur. J.Entomol. 98: 127-132, 2001 ISSN 1210-5759 Carabid beetles (Coleóptera: Carabidae) and habitat fragmentation: a review Ja r i NIEMELÁ Department ofEcology and Systematics, PO Box 17, FIN-00014 University ofHelsinki, Finland e-mail:[email protected] Key words. Carabids, conservation, dispersal, forests, habitat fragmentation, habitat heterogeneity, metapopulations, species richness, generalists, specialists Abstract. I review the effects of habitat fragmentation on carabid beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and examine whether the taxon could be used as an indicator of fragmentation. Related to this, I study the conservation needs of carabids. The reviewed studies showed that habitat fragmentation affects carabid assemblages. Many species that require habitat types found in interiors of frag ments are threatened by fragmentation. On the other hand, the species composition of small fragments of habitat (up to a few hec tares) is often altered by species invading from the surroundings. Recommendations for mitigating these adverse effects include maintenance of large habitat patches and connections between them. Furthermore, landscape homogenisation should be avoided by maintaining heterogeneity ofhabitat types. It appears that at least in the Northern Hemisphere there is enough data about carabids for them to be fruitfully used to signal changes in land use practices. Many carabid species have been classified as threatened. Mainte nance of the red-listed carabids in the landscape requires species-specific or assemblage-specific measures. INTRODUCTION HABITAT FRAGMENTATION AND CARABID ASSEMBLAGES Destruction and fragmentation of habitats, overkill, introduction of alien species, and cascading effects of Effects of fragmentation on carabid assemblages species extinctions have been labelled the “evil quartet”, Habitat fragmentation is the partitioning of a con i.e.

  • Gradients of Latvian Magnetic Anomalies
Scientific Journal of Riga Technical University Sustainable Spatial Development 2011 __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Volume 2 Gradients of Latvian Magnetic Anomalies Vladimir Vertennikov, Riga Technical University Abstract. This article discusses one of the most important and vertical gradients. It is possible to determine those geophysical factors, which produces an impact on the gradients by calculations or measurements using special demographic processes and reflects the nature of variability in instruments – magnetic gradiometers. Instrumented gradient the anomalous magnetic field intensity in space. The article characterises the horizontal magnetic gradients, which vary measurements are predominantly utilised in local areas during within the wide range: from 10 to 2400 nT/km. It distinguishes prospecting and exploration for minerals. In regional magnetic scale and magnetic gradient areas. The article gives an investigations, to which concrete operations associated with ecodemographic evaluation of the territory of Latvia by the investigating the impact of geophysical factors on gradience of the anomalous magnetic field. demographic processes belong, horizontal gradients are the main factor; they are determined by calculations. Keywords: horizontal magnetic gradient, magnetic scale, magnetic gradient area, ecodemographic evaluation of territory by magnetic gradience. CHARACTERISATION OF HORIZONTAL MAGNETIC GRADIENTS The magnetic field is represented in the Latvian territory by a complex set of anomalies with different signs, intensity, size The gradient is an important parameter of anomalous and morphology. The transitions from one anomaly to another magnetic field. The discussion deals with the spatial intensity are expressed through changes in the field intensity and are variations. The thing is that the intensity of the anomalous either gradual, occurring step-by-step, or abrupt.
