Appendix List of Challenger Parties Operationalization of Challenger Parties A party is considered a challenger party if in any given year it has not been a member of a central government after 1930. A party is considered a dominant party if in any given year it has been part of a central government after 1930. Only parties with ministers in cabinet are considered to be members of a central government. A party ceases to be a challenger party once it enters central government (in the election immediately preceding entry into office, it is classified as a challenger party). Participation in a national war/crisis cabinets and national unity governments (e.g., Communists in France’s provisional government) does not in itself qualify a party as a dominant party. A dominant party will continue to be considered a dominant party after merging with a challenger party, but a party will be considered a challenger party if it splits from a dominant party. Using this definition, the following parties were challenger parties in Western Europe in the period under investigation (1950–2017). The parties that became dominant parties during the period are indicated with an asterisk. Human rights violations. reported to us by a number of reliable sources. have put Northern Ireland on an unenviable par with some of the most barbarous regimes of communist commissars or tinhorn Latin American dictators. The British are trampling on the rights of Irish citizens in a manner reminiscent of Oliver Cromwell's iron-fisted rule more than three centuries ago." So wrote Jack Anderson in a column published in more than 800 newspapers throughout the United States in October 1978. Because of its policies in Ireland. the United Kingdom earned the dubious honor of becoming the first nation to be found guilty of violating Article 3 of the Human Rights Convention by the European Court of Human Rights. Amnesty International and more recently. the International League for Human Rights. have charged that Britain continues to violate civilized standards in north-east Ireland. Despite this. many in the communications media continue to label the defenders of the victims as terrorists. while those who have murdered tortured and intimidated are promoted as peace keepers! We give in this pamphlet facts about the British Army and the Irish Republican Army. We include also excerpts from a statement made by Meurig Parri, one of a growing number of former members of the British Army now active in the Northern Ireland Veteran's Association and the Troops Out Movement We believe that all who weigh the evidence will have no difficulty in identifying the real terrorists in occupied Ireland. -

Harknett, Ph.D. Abstract The British Government has been engaged for more than thirty years in a struggle with terrorism related to Northern Ireland. During what is euphemistically called the Troubles, the British government has implemented a series of special emergency laws to address the violence. Drawing upon the political context and debate surrounding the implementation and development of the emergency legislation this research examines the overall effect of British anti-terrorism legislation on both respect for civil liberties and the government’s ability to fight campaigns of violence. Drawing heavily upon primary sources, high profile cases of miscarriages of justice and accusation of an official ‘shoot to kill’ policy this project explores three distinct areas related to a government’s balancing of the exigencies of individual liberty and societal order. -

Opening statement in Tranche 1 Phase 2 to the Undercover Policing Inquiry on behalf of: Richard Chessum 'Mary' James Scobie QC | Garden Court Chambers Piers Marquis | Doughty Street Chambers Paul Heron | Public Interest Law Centre 14th April 2021 Opening Statement in Tranche 1 Phase 2 on behalf of Richard Chessum and ‘Mary’ We represent four Core-Participants who are directly affected by Undercover officers whose evidence is to be heard in this Phase. Richard Chessum and ‘Mary’ were spied upon by Detective Constable Richard Clark. We are using his real name because it is one of the few that the Inquiry has disclosed. Every other officer that we refer to, and there are many, is referred to by their cover name. We also represent Lindsey German and John Rees. They were spied upon, at the very least, by ‘Phil Cooper’ and ‘Colin Clark’. The evidence of other officers impacts directly on the Socialist Workers Party, the organisation in which they held Central Committee Roles. We were directed to provide this written Opening Statement by the 14th April 2021. That direction was made on the basis that the Inquiry would disclose the evidence of these officers by the 4th March 2021. That was not done. The material in respect of Clark was not provided until the 1st April 2021 At the time of writing, the Inquiry has still not served a witness statement from ‘Colin Clark.’ It has not served a single page of disclosure in respect of ‘Phil Cooper.’ We have asked that these officers be put back to the next phase, to give those who were spied upon a chance to contribute. -

Morgan © 2016 Brian Drohan ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Brian Drohan: Rights at War: British Counterinsurgency in Cyprus, Aden, and Northern Ireland (Under the direction of Susan D. Pennybacker) This study analyzes the role of human rights activism during three post-1945 British counterinsurgency campaigns in Cyprus (1955-1959), Aden (1963-1967), and the Northern Ireland “Troubles” (emphasizing 1969-1976). Based on material gathered from 15 archives in four countries as well as oral history records and personal papers, this study demonstrates that human rights activism shaped British operational decisions during each of these conflicts. Activists mobilized ideas of human rights to restrain counterinsurgency violence by defining certain British actions as illegal or morally unjustifiable. Although British forces often prevented activists from restraining state violence, activists forced government officials and military commanders to develop new ways of covering up human rights abuses. Focusing the analytical lens on activists and the officials with whom they interacted places rights activists on the counterinsurgency “battlefield” -

UNITED KINGDOM Date of Elections: June 18, 1970 Characteristics of Parliament The Parliament of the United Kingdom is composed of two Houses: — The House of Commons, which consists of 630 members elected for 5 years. — The House of Lords, which has approximately 850 hereditary peers; 16 peers elected for each legislature by the hereditary peers of Scotland; the survivors of the 28 life peers elected by the hereditary peers of Ireland prior to 1920; 155 peers appointed by the Crown; 9 Lords of Ordinary Appeal, high magistrates appointed for life; and 26 Lords Spiritual (the 2 Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the 3 Bishops of London, Winchester and Durham and the 21 Bishops of longest standing). The functions of President of this upper House are exercised by the Lord Chancellor who is appointed by the Prime Minister and is not necessarily a peer. British citizens were called to the polls on June 18, 1970, to elect the 630 members of the House of Commons, prematurely dissolved on May 29,1970. Electoral System All British subjects or citizens of the Irish Republic, of either sex, are entitled to vote, provided they have reached the age of 18 by the day on which the elections are held, and are registered on the electoral list (revised annually) of the constituency in which they are resident. A person whose 18th birthday will fall in the 12 months following the publication date of the electoral lists may be registered on them, but may not vote before reaching the required age. However, members of the House of Lords, the mentally deficient, criminals sentenced to more than 12 months' imprisonment, or any persons who, during the 5 years prior to the election, have been found guilty of electoral corruption or fraud may not exercise their right to vote. -
