Officina Delle Arti’ Concerto-Evento Dei Cluster Il Più Importante Gruppo Di Elettronica D'avanguardia Nato Negli Anni '70 COMUNE DI REGGIO EMILIA Ufficio Stampa ________________________________________________________________________________ Martedì 12 febbraio 2008 Sabato 16 febbraio a ‘Officina delle Arti’ concerto-evento dei Cluster il più importante gruppo di elettronica d'avanguardia nato negli anni '70 Oggi ancora attivo nella sua formazione storica, il duo formato dai tastieristi Dieter Moebius e Hans Joachim Roedelius. Sabato 16 febbraio, dopo oltre 20 anni di assenza dall'Italia, i Cluster arrivano nel salone centrale dell'Officina delle Arti (via Brigata Reggio 29) a Reggio Emilia, con un concerto che avrà inizio a partire dalle ore 21. In occasione della performance verrà effettuata la presentazione della ristampa riveduta e corretta di Cosmic Dreams at Play, la bibbia della musica creativa tedesca scritta dal saggista norvegese Dag Erik Asbjornsen. La riedizione del testo è il primo libro pubblicato da 'Strange Vertigo', nuova iniziativa editoriale reggiana specializzata nel recupero di testi ormai irreperibili nel campo della saggistica musicale e cinematografica. L’evento è promosso da Officina delle arti, il centro per le arti contemporanee voluto dal Comune di Reggio Emilia-assessorato Cultura. Sponsor tecnico dell’evento è Pro Music. INFO: tel. 0522 456249 Cluster è il più importante gruppo di elettronica d'avanguardia nato negli anni '70, oggi ancora attivo nella sua formazione storica, il duo formato dai tastieristi Dieter Moebius e Hans Joachim Roedelius. La formazione viene fondata da questi assieme a Conrad Schnitzler nel 1970, con il nome di ‘Kluster’, sulla scia di esperienze artistiche, anche poetiche e figurative, condivise nel collettivo Zodiak nella turbolenta Berlino di fine anni '60. Dopo gli esordi ultrarumoristici del 1970, basati su sessioni di pura improvvisazione, dove strumenti distorti sono mixati ad utensili, sveglie e qualsiasi altro suono non convenzionale, Schnitzler se ne va, lasciando i ri-denominati ‘Cluster’ nella sua forma definitiva di duo. Con l'avvento dei sintetizzatori il sodalizio ‘Cluster’ produce per un decennio dischi che si sono rivelati pietre miliari nella definizione di nuovi generi elettronici. Muovendosi immediatamente, con Cluster '71, nella scia di una radicalizzazione del filone minimalista di Terry Riley e Philip Glass, l'ensemble tedesco attraverso il successivo Cluster 2, dà il via al genere ‘industrial’ sviluppato poi da Einsturzende Neubaten e altri negli anni '80. Zuckerzeit - contemporaneo ai lavori rivoluzionari dei Kraftwerk - definisce assieme a questi il suono da jingle pubblicitario dell'elettronica di consumo, basilare per l'avvio della new wave più sintetica e del techno pop. Dopo alcune altre emissioni discografiche di alta qualità, nel 1981 i due si separano, intraprendendo carriere soliste e collaborazioni con artisti terzi ricche di soddisfazioni. Negli anni '90, con la crescita di popolarità della musica ‘ambient’, ‘Cluster’ si riforma, per una collaborazione che dura tuttora. Ormai tutt'altro che giovani, questi artisti pionieri dell'elettronica non smettono di perseguire assiduamente la loro vena sperimentale, continuando ad esibirsi in performance ed a sfornare opere discografiche con immutata passione. Il loro prossimo CD, intitolato Live in Berlin uscirà la prossima primavera per l'etichetta indipendente 'Important Records'. /PP .

Using an array of exclusively analogue instruments, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock and Armin Metz have recorded eight tracks which, at one and the same time, are intrinsically hypnotic and sublimely beautiful. In principle, “Elemente” was created in much the same fashion as earlier Qluster albums: the three musicians met up in Schönberg, a remote hamlet in northern Mecklenburg. The eight pieces were distilled from the original recordings of their lengthy improvised sessions, with additional elements added to only three of the tracks in the production process: a synthesizer melody for “Zeno”, a prepared piano for “Xymelan” and a beat for “Tatum”. First special feature on the new album: the “tools of the trade”. In their choice of equipment, Qluster reach back to their own history as Cluster, more than forty years ago, when legendary albums like “Zuckerzeit”, “Sowiesoso” and “Curiosum” were made. “Elemente” has been crafted exclusively with analogue instruments: a range of analogue synthesizers, rhythm machines, a Farfisa organ, a Fender Rhodes piano and various effects devices plus – second special feature and making its debut in the band’s narrative! – a 1970s sequencer playing an endless loop of manually recorded melodies, fed through effects and equalizers to achieve that typically hypnotic sequencer character. Listen out for them on “Perpetuum”, “Xymelan”, “Tatum” and “Lindow”. By way of contrast, “Weite” and “Infinitum” unfold in vast echo chambers, free of metrics.

Clearly he had interpreted rock’n’roll’s development as moving in a circle and, accepting the punk wave as parallel to Beatlemania and the surrounding Pop Explosion of the early ‘60s, obviously the next step (after the Death of Punk) was going to be some kind of movement that equally paralleled the psychedelia that bloomed in the later 60s. Introduction Electric Junk: Krautrock’s Identity Crisis If there is any musical subculture to which this modern age of online music consumption has been particularly kind, it is certainly the obscure, groundbreaking, and oft misunderstood German pop music phenomenon known as “krautrock”. That krautrock’s appeal to new generations of musicians and fans both in Germany and abroad continues to grow with each passing year is a testament to the implicitly iconoclastic nature of the style; krautrock still sounds odd, eccentric, and even confrontational approximately twenty-five years after the movement is generally considered to have ended.1 In fact, it is difficult nowadays to even page through a recent issue of major periodicals like Rolling Stone or Spin without chancing upon some kind of passing reference to the genre.
