QLUSTER ELEMENTE CD / LP (+CD) / Digital / November 2nd, 2018 “Elemente” - album number seven from the third incarnation of the legendary krautronic project Kluster/Cluster springs a surprise with a minor sensation: sequencer lines! Using an array of exclusively analogue instruments, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock and Armin Metz have recorded eight tracks which, at one and the same time, are intrinsically hypnotic and sublimely beautiful. In principle, “Elemente” was created in much the same fashion as earlier Qluster albums: the three musicians met up in Schönberg, a remote hamlet in northern Mecklenburg. The eight pieces were distilled from the original recordings of their lengthy improvised sessions, with additional elements added to only three of the tracks in the production process: a synthesizer melody for “Zeno”, a prepared piano for “Xymelan” and a beat for “Tatum”. First special feature on the new album: the “tools of the trade”. In their choice of equipment, Qluster reach back to their own history as Cluster, more than forty years ago, when legendary albums like “Zuckerzeit”, “Sowiesoso” and “Curiosum” were made. “Elemente” has been crafted exclusively with analogue instruments: a range of analogue synthesizers, rhythm machines, a Farfisa organ, a Fender Rhodes piano and various effects devices plus – second special feature and making its debut in the band’s narrative! – a 1970s sequencer playing an endless loop of manually recorded melodies, fed through effects and equalizers to achieve that typically hypnotic sequencer character. Listen out for them on “Perpetuum”, “Xymelan”, “Tatum” and “Lindow”. By way of contrast, “Weite” and “Infinitum” unfold in vast echo chambers, free of metrics. -

Sabato 16 febbraio, dopo oltre 20 anni di assenza dall'Italia, i Cluster arrivano nel salone centrale dell'Officina delle Arti (via Brigata Reggio 29) a Reggio Emilia, con un concerto che avrà inizio a partire dalle ore 21. In occasione della performance verrà effettuata la presentazione della ristampa riveduta e corretta di Cosmic Dreams at Play, la bibbia della musica creativa tedesca scritta dal saggista norvegese Dag Erik Asbjornsen. La riedizione del testo è il primo libro pubblicato da 'Strange Vertigo', nuova iniziativa editoriale reggiana specializzata nel recupero di testi ormai irreperibili nel campo della saggistica musicale e cinematografica. Kraftwerk, Can, Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Cluster, Faust et bien d’autres mènent les musiques populaires AU-DELÀ « au-delà du rock ». Pour les musiciens aventureux d’Allemagne de l’Ouest, affirmer leur identité nécessite de transcender leurs influences, de s’émanciper des modèles dominants anglais et américains. Introduction Electric Junk: Krautrock’s Identity Crisis If there is any musical subculture to which this modern age of online music consumption has been particularly kind, it is certainly the obscure, groundbreaking, and oft misunderstood German pop music phenomenon known as “krautrock”. That krautrock’s appeal to new generations of musicians and fans both in Germany and abroad continues to grow with each passing year is a testament to the implicitly iconoclastic nature of the style; krautrock still sounds odd, eccentric, and even confrontational approximately twenty-five years after the movement is generally considered to have ended.1 In fact, it is difficult nowadays to even page through a recent issue of major periodicals like Rolling Stone or Spin without chancing upon some kind of passing reference to the genre. -

German rock, instead, invented a different kind of rock music. In fact, many German bands were not playing "rock" music at all. There is no question that the great era of German avant-rock was inspired by psychedelic music, but the German interpretation of psychedelic music had little to do with reproducing the effects of drugs: German musicians saw a relationship between psychedelic experiments and the German electronic avantgarde (such as Karlheinz Stockhausen), a relationship that, in retrospect, was already obvious in the USA's psychedelia, but that no one had articulated before. In 1968 three young musicians, Conrad Schnitzler, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Klaus Schulze, founded the "Zodiak Free Arts Lab" in Berlin. This became the first venue for popular electronic music in Europe. That can be considered the moment when German musicians figured out that strategic relationship between psychedelic music and avantgarde music. -

Ihr Sound trifft bei Retro-Hörern auf Unverständnis. von uli krug In der Geschichte elektrisch verstärkter Popmusik sind 38 Jahre, also in etwa die Zeitspanne zwischen Elvis Presleys frühen Singles auf Sun Records und den ersten Love Parades, nahezu eine Ewigkeit. Da werden die musikalischen Ausdrucksformen einer weit zurückliegenden Subkultur selbst für ein aufgeschlossenes Publikum, das noch so sehr mit Retro-Attitüden kokettiert, beinahe unverständlich. Es ist heutzutage wohl schlicht nicht mehr nachzuvollziehen, wie groß der Kontrast war zwischen der Musik der einstigen Elektronik-Avantgardisten wie Ash Ra Tempel, Can oder Tangerine Dream und der analogen und klangarmen Alltagswelt jener Zeit, deren Rhythmus von Normalarbeitszeiten und Werksferien bestimmt war und deren musikalischer Anteil höchstens in einem von Ferne dudelnden Verkehrssender bestand. Wie fern dieser Kontext dem derzeitigen Rockpublikum ist, erfuhr zum Auftakt des Berliner Interface-Festivals für avantgardistischen Pop auch das Duo aus Hans-Joachim Roedelius und Dieter Möbius, das unter dem Namen Cluster mit Alben wie »Zuckerzeit« (1974) oder »Sowiesoso« (1976) längst in die Geschichte der elektronischen Musik eingegangen ist. Fast vier Jahrzehnte waren die zwei mittlerweile im Rentenalter stehenden Pioniere, die der Veranstalter schnoddrig als »legendäre Typen« bezeichnete, nicht mehr in der Stadt aufgetreten. Und nichts erinnerte mehr an die elektronischen Happenings für Keyboards plus allerlei damals möglicher Mittel zur Klangverfremdung, die Kluster, die sich 1971 in Cluster umbenannten, im alten Westberlin veranstaltet hatten. -

5 THE STEADY STATE THEORY: RECALIBRATING THE QUIDDITY OF AMBIENT MUSIC Simon Cummings “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” – Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr1 Introduction As the superstitions of religious interpretation have given way to the rational rigour of scientific investigation, so our understanding of the nature of the universe has fundamentally shifted. Symbolism, significance, order and limitation have been replaced by meaninglessness, insignificance, randomness and infinity. As we look up at the stars, gazing out and beyond what we think of as home, our perception passes ever further away from the specific to the generalised, an existence characterised by a uniform distribution of elements (homogeneity) appearing the same from all vantage points and in all directions (isotropy).2 From this universal perspective everything may be precious, but nothing is privileged. In tandem with our understanding of how things are, how they came to be has been similarly scrutinised. The twentieth century brought numerous theories regarding such origins (or lack of them), proposing either that the universe had no fixed beginning – Fred Hoyle’s ‘steady state’ model – or that it all began instantaneously in an enormous conflagration, the well-known ‘big 1 Les Guêpes January 1849 (6th series, 1859), in Oxford Essential Quotations, Sixth Edition, ed.
