I am especially beholding to Drs. Burl Noggle and Lewis P., Simpson for their insistence on the importance of this project and their careful attention to my work throughout my career as a graduate student. The other members of my committee, Drs. M. T. Carleton, Gary A. Crump, and Anne C. Loveland, have provided help in many ways, some of which they are probably unaware. Dr. John Loos, Chairman of the Department of History, has also been very en­ couraging, as was the late T. Harry Williams. Louis D. Rubin, Jr., and Cleanth Brooks graciously assented to interviews, and my conversations with them added inestimably to the dissertation. I was unable to discuss the Southern Re­ view with Robert Penn Warren, but his contributions to Southern letters supplied an inspiration that would otherwise have been lacking. My fellow graduate students in the History department at LSU have made acquiring a doctorate a very enjoyable experience. The discussions of baseball and movies with close friends prob­ ably had more to do with this dissertation that any one of us realizes. Graduate school, certainly, would not have been as much fun without our conversations, and the dissertation would iii not have been however good it is without my colleagues' encouragement. My parents, Lloyd H. Cabot and Marlene C. Finell, of course, have contributed in a more intangible fashion. Their respect for education, their financial and emotional support, and their love of history and literature are just a few of the many things they have given me. Of all the people I might mention I owe the most to my grandmother, Lillian Feldman, and my husband, Vincent Michael Tentarelli. My grandmother has long dreamed of a granddaughter with a doctorate, and I am happy if only because I was somehow able to make that dream come true. As for Vincent, his sar­ castic (I trust) remarks regarding the value, or lack thereof, of history, his incessant nagging at me to do my work, and his refusal to invest his entire person in my academic career, mean more to me than anything else. PREFACE In the spring of 1935 a new type of literary magazine appeared. Unlike the old literary quarterlies such as the Dial and the Hound and the Horn, it discussed political and economic matters. Unlike the more political magazines such as the New Republic and the New Masses, it discussed liter­ ature outside of a political context. Unlike older journals of the South such as the Sewanee Review and the Virginia Quar­ terly Magazine, this new journal self-consciously related poetry and politics to the twentieth-century South. This new literary magazine was the Southern Review, published by Louis­ iana State University from 1935 to 1942. If for no other reason, the Southern Review is important in the history of American literaty magazines. The Review merits consideration on other grounds as well. To begin with, it was a significant part of the so-called Southern Renascence, that apparently sudden and sustained literary activity that began in the late 1920s and ended sometime after World War II. The same forces that produced the Renascence in general brought forth the Southern Review in particular. Thus we can examine the Review in the same way we might examine Absalom! Absalom! or "Ode to the Confederate Dead," as a product of certain non- literary forces acting upon Southern thinkers in the first part iv i V of the twentieth century. In addition to being another of the literary commodities of the period, the Southern Review actively participated in the Southern Renascence. It published the fiction, poetry, and criticism of several major Southern writers. It evaluated these works in critical articles. And it introduced several new Southern authors to American readers. The magazine also shared with the Southern Renascence a point of view. The important writers of this period found the material promises of the "New South" neither real nor de­ sirable. Instead, these people and the editors of the Review regarded the relationships between past and present, tradition and change, individual and community as central to modern lit­ erature and society. They felt that exchanging a traditional past for modern conveniences and a higher standard of living was a bad bargain. They had sincere doubts about the advan­ tages of industrialism and capitalism, and they resented the control that cities of the northeast had over the literary marketplace. This distrust of the American economic and social system brings the Review out of a strictly Southern arena and places it in the midst of American intellectual history in the 1930s. Throughout the decade writers analyzed American society and found it lacking in one way or another. Most historians agree, however, that intellectuals in the 19 30s generally drifted toward the left of the political spectrum, the left ranging from the more socialistic aspects of the New Deal to communism. vi Although the Southern Review did not present only one opinion on the matter, and in fact published articlies by socialist Norman Thomas, Marxist Frederic Schuman, and leftist Sidney Hook, its perspective lay definitely to the right of most American thought in the period. In this way the Review serves as an interesting counterpoint to the mainstream of American intellectual activity in the thirties. In order to substantiate these claims of the Southern Review1s importance, I will examine the magazine's historical context and its contents. I do not intend to present an ac­ count of the history of the Southern Review — that has been done. Rather, I want to put the Southern Review in the context of American and Southern intellectual history in the 1930s and to analyze its contents as an expression of the specific themes and points of view of the Southern Renascence. This will in­ clude the examination of what appear to be strictly literary matters, but, as I trust will be made clear, strictly liter­ ary matters often have extra-literary implications, even for New Critics. ABSTRACT This is a study of the Southern Review, a cultural quarterly published at Louisiana State University from 1935 to 1942, and edited by Charles Pipkin, Cleanth Brooks, and Robert Penn Warren.

Allen Tate, Merrill Moore, Robert Penn Warren, John Crowe Ransom, Donald Davidson. Five balding white men, dressed impeccably in suits and ties, are seated outdoors, Iobviously posed by photographer Joe Rudis to appear as if lost in con- versation. Despite the artifice, the subjects seem relaxed and even playful, what with Moore practically sitting on Tate’s lap, Warren lean- ing in as if to insert a word edgewise, and the entire group looking to Allen Tate as if expecting a clever remark. It was a happy moment for the old friends. It was 1956, and after three decades of being ignored by the University, the Fugitives had returned to campus in glory for a colloquium devoted to their literary work. JosEPh MilliChaP 1 Robert Penn Warren and Photography JosEPh MilliChaP WEstErn kEntuCky univErsity Robert Penn Warren’s career and canon demonstrate his more than casual interest in photography, much like that of several Southern contemporaries. If not so directly as Eudora Welty, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison, who were all accomplished photographers, Warren became creatively engaged with photographic art during the 1930s and 1940s, along with other deracinated Southerners such as Erskine Caldwell, Richard Wright, and James Agee. Some of these literary figures were directly involved with books illustrated by photographs during these critical decades. For example, You Have Seen Their Faces (1937), combining Caldwell’s non-fiction and Margaret Bourke- White’s photography, became a national bestseller. In contrast, Hurston’s Tell My Horse (1937) and Wright’s 12 Million Black Voices (1941) never have been widely appreciated, while Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), a compilation of prose and photographyby Agee and Walker Evans, was initially neglected.

In some sense, the goal of this dissertation is to account for both the effects of and development of this gap in disciplinary history and in the process of doing literary criticism. Yet, if there is any genre of academic writing that is a consistent exception to this rule, it is the acknowledgments: a place where a critic tracks her encounters with institutional life and the unforgettable, invaluable actions of mentors, colleagues, and friends. Such entries are always woefully partial. Still acknowledgments remain the thing that many compose as they walk to and from campus. To imagine the ways we can give thanks to those who made the work possible is to imagine the completion of the work. Without this act of gratitude, the work could not be. I began this project as an undergraduate in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Excluding reviews, that is approximately one f publication by or about Warren every three days in 1980. By the time this bibliography is published-probably in late fall1981-the number of entries waiting for a possible revision will have increased proportionately.     33 ‘Dramatistic to the Core’: Allen Tate and A Grammar of Motives M. Elizabeth Weiser Ohio State University During the 1930s, Kenneth Burke and Allen Tate were much alike: both saw themselves as critics and artists, both earned their living largely through freelance writing, and both were involved in political movements that condemned the values of monopoly capitalism. When Tate was on the faculty of Princeton in the early 1940s, the Tate family were frequent guests at the Burke family homestead in Andover. Their private correspondence reveals that the two men admired each other’s minds— Tate telling Burke early in the decade that he was “the most philosophical of my friends. You are, my dear Sir, a constant source of pleasure to my reflections” (4/9/1931, ATP), and Burke excelling himself in witty puns and wordplays to keep his friend interested.1 Perhaps it was the intensity of their long-distance friendship that caused Tate the poet to care enough about Burke’s philosophy to be among those most opposed to Burke’s shift from literary to cultural critic in the 1930s. It was surely Tate the critic’s continued argument with Burke’s ideas throughout the early 1940s that influenced Burke’s particular brand of cultural criticism—the rhetorical theory he termed dramatism. Without Burke’s ongoing, sometimes rancorous, but always engaged dialogue with Tate and other New Critics, the specific methodology of dramatism may have remained the looser philosophy of symbolic action. It is a historical irony, therefore, that Tate’s eventual support for A Grammar of Motives may well have contributed to the obliqueness of its hortatory message and the confused reception of its critics—a reception of which we still bear the legacy today.
