Dear Senator:

Reaching back into history I found this.

If I can help in any way, it would be worth an old Nikon or two.

The very best of good wishes as you undertake this rescue mission. Embellishing a bit on Senator Dole's comment, your appointment constitutes a "home-run" not only for the President but for the Nation as well.

(Candor, however, compels me to mention that I attended to some other matters as well.)

Nonetheless, it was a distinct pleasure to meet you and an opportunity to wish you well in your future endeavors. I would only add that I, for one, did not find the new Mrs. Warner distracting - only amusing.

I trust you will permit me to call upon you on my next visit and, if I can ever be of service at this end, please know that I will be glad to respond.

To me your choice was to put country and party ahead of your personal goals. Noble, but I believe entirely sincere. Please don't let the President lose touch with the Republican "grass rootn people. Mr. Nixon lost touch with the people and without their support success is impossible. It's important that professionals like yourself guide our leaders, because all yellow brick roads in D. c. do not lead to OZ.

Yours was a selfless act, putting country before personal ambition.

I know you' 11 do a great job, not just in administering the White House, but in restoring the nation's confidence in the President and his Administration. As a White House staff veteran of sorts, let me observe that you have some real fine people in the Policy Development Office - namely Gary Bauer and Chuck Hobbs. Senator Howard Baker The White House Washington, DC

Senator Baker, the number of letters I've written to government officials can be counted on one finger, but I feel compelled to write to you expressing my elation at your decision to become Chief of Staff. Like many other Americans, I have watched in dismay as the wheels came off the Reagan presidency. I have tremendous respect for our President and think that he has put us back on the right track since 1981. But he and his staff badly botched the entire Iran-Nicaragua situation. During the years I lived in Memphis, I gained tremendous respect for the way you conducted yourself as a Senator and later as Majority Leader. I felt that you represented me with fairness and vision and, above all, absolute honesty. I wish you the best in your new work,
