The Identity of Rauf de Boun, Author of the Petit Bruit John Spence Pembroke College, Cambridge The chronicle called the Petit Bruit was written by meistre Rauf de Boun in 1309. 1 The Petit Bruit is preserved in full in only one manuscript: London, British Library, MS Harley 902, ff. I' - II '.' It recounts the history of England from the arrival oflegendary Trojan founder Brutus down to Edward I, interspersed with legendary characters such as King Arthur, Havelok and Guy of Warwick. This might sound like a familiar pattern for a late medieval chronicle of England, but despite this the identity of the Petit Bruit's sources have remained unclear.' Many details of Rauf de Boun's account differ greatly from the legendary history familiar from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae and its descendants, and the Petit Bruit sometimes also distorts more factual material, as when Edward the Confessor is succeeded by his brother, the imaginary Miles, who in turn is murdered by Harold, who has also become Edward the Confessor's (and Miles's) brother.' It has to be said that Raurs grasp of the span of English history does not seem very firm, and he has been much criticised for this, most memorably by Sir Frederic Madden who ;n 1828 referred to him as a 'miserable History-monger'.' The anomalous nature of the Petit Bruit has perhaps led historians to undervalue the work, however. After all, playing fast and loose with Geoffrey of Monmouth's confection of British legends hardly disqualifies Rauf de Boun from being a capable chronicler of more recent history. -

Abstract of Monia Mancinelli's Work (RAMUS
Abstract of Monia Mancinelli’s work (RAMUS PhD - curriculum FITMU, XXIX cicle – XV o. s.) Title: “The Principle of Individuation in Landulph Caracciolus’s commentary on the Sentences. Text and study”. This research is aimed at reconstructing and studying the sections of Landulph Caracciolus’s commentary on the Sentences dedicated to the principle of individuation. Landulph Caracciolus is a Franciscan friar coming from Naples who lived in the XIVth century and who lectured the Sentences at Paris in the academic year 1318-1319. Recently, Christopher D. Schabel has underlined that, despite its widespread popularity and the important context of its composition, however, Landulph’s commentary on the Sentences has largely been neglected. From 1999 Christopher D. Schabel and Russell L. Friedman have been promoting a larger attention to Landulph’s commentary, showing that the Franciscan friar can be an interesting mean to trace the story of the reception of Duns Scotus and Peter Auriol’s doctrines at the University of Paris during the first twenty years of the XIVth century. The question of the principle of the individuation is about the research of the existence and the identification of the element responsible for both ontological determination and knowledge of the single entity. The first chapter of this work shows that the question explodes during the XIIIth century thanks to the Aristotelian corpus and to Avicenna’s and Averroes’s works, and many thinkers try to offer a personal solution to the problem, offering six main competing theories: 1) real natures are individual as such (William of Ware); 2) double negation (Henry of Ghent); 3) actual existence (maybe Roger Bacon, Peter of Falco, Peter of Alverny or Robert Kilwardby); 4) the collection of personal accidents/properties (ascribed to Boethius), and particularly quantity (Godfrey of Fontaines and Thomas Sutton); 5) matter (Albert the Great, Thomas of Aquin and Giles of Rome); 6) respectus ad agens (unknown). -
Information on Historical Epwell
Topology and History of Epwell Village in the 13th century This note attempts to provide some background to the discovery location of the recent Museum acquisition. It in no way implies any tangible connection between the Seal and Epwell. Various sources are used mainly Victoria County History Volume X. A complete gold medieval seal matrix of 13th century date and in exceptional condition. The seal matrix is oval in plan with an applied gold spine and suspension loop on the reverse. In the centre of the front of the matrix is an oval dark green jasper intaglio, intricately engraved to depict a female in profile. The female wears a long veil about her head with either hair, or possibly pearls, visible above the forehead. The matrix has a personal legend in Latin around the outer edge beginning with a six-pointed star and reads '*SIGILVM : SECRETI : hEN :', translated as the 'Secret sea… Topology As the crow flies, Epwell is situated half-way between the towns of Banbury and Shipston-on-Stour, on the Oxfordshire-Warwickshire boundary. Its companion villages are Swalcliffe, Sibfords Gower and Feris, Tadmarton, Shutford and Shennington. Its nearest town is Banbury, 6.5 miles away, but Epwell was always the most remote of its villages, in some periods over 4 hours by cart from Banbury. The village of 1140 acres lies 180 m. (600 ft.) above sea level with a sheltering ring of low hills reaching up to 220 m. (743 ft). The land is of a sandy brown, oolitic limestone which has formed layers of clay at the foots of the slopes. -

Băltuță, Leiden: Brill, 2020, pp. 73–110.] Introduction Is vision merely a state of the beholder’s sensory organ which can be explained as an immediate effect caused by external sensible objects? Or is it rather a successive process in which the observer actively scanning the surrounding environment plays a major part? These two general attitudes towards visual perception were both developed already by ancient thinkers. The former is embraced by natural philosophers (e.g., atomists and Aristotelians) and is often labelled “intromissionist”, based on their assumption that vision is an outcome of the causal influence exerted by an external object upon a sensory organ receiving an entity from the object. The latter attitude to vision as a successive process is rather linked to the “extramissionist” theories of the proponents of geometrical optics (such as Euclid or Ptolemy) who suggest that an entity – a visual ray – is sent forth from the eyes to the object.1 The present paper focuses on the contributions to this ancient controversy proposed by some 13th-century Latin thinkers. In contemporary historiography of medieval Latin philosophy, the general narrative is that whereas thinkers in the 12th century held various (mostly Platonic) versions of the extramission theory, the situation changes during the first half of the 13th century when texts by Avicenna, Aristotle (with the commentaries by Averroes), and especially Alhacen, who all favour the intromissionist paradigm, were gradually assimilated.2 It is assumed that, as a result, 1 For an account of the ancient theories of vision based on this line of conflict see especially D. -

The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Anne Levitsky All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky This dissertation explores the relationship of the act of singing to being a human in the lyric poetry of the troubadours, traveling poet-musicians who frequented the courts of contemporary southern France in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. In my dissertation, I demonstrate that the troubadours surpass traditionally-held perceptions of their corpus as one entirely engaged with themes of courtly romance and society, and argue that their lyric poetry instead both displays the influence of philosophical conceptions of sound, and critiques notions of personhood and sexuality privileged by grammarians, philosophers, and theologians. I examine a poetic device within troubadour songs that I term ‘personified song’—an occurrence in the lyric tradition where a performer turns toward the song he/she is about to finish singing and directly addresses it. This act lends the song the human capabilities of speech, motion, and agency. It is through the lens of the ‘personified song’ that I analyze this understudied facet of troubadour song. Chapter One argues that the location of personification in the poetic text interacts with the song’s melodic structure to affect the type of personification the song undergoes, while exploring the ways in which singing facilitates the creation of a body for the song. -

The early fourteenth century has become a particularly active area of research in medieval philosophy and theology in the last two decades. Interest in Oxford thought led the way. Building upon the earlier publication of the works of Richard Campsale, William of Ockham, and the Lectura Secunda of Adam Wodeham, we now have editions of the works of Walter Chatton and Henry of Harclay, and questions from Thomas Wylton, Walter Burley, Richard Fitzralph, and Thomas Bradwardine. As regards Paris, the ongoing critical edition of the opera omnia of John Duns Scotus and a portion of Peter Auriol’s commentary on the Sentences is now been followed by projects for critical editions of the rest of Auriol’s commentary and the Sentences commentaries of Durand of St. Pourçain, Francis of Marchia, and Gerard Odonis. Philosophical Debates brings together many of those who are leading the research field on Parisian thought in the early fourteenth century. The essays themselves are the result of a joint project between Stephen Brown at Boston College and Thomas Dewender at Bonn, who hosted two conferences on this theme at their respective institutions. -
