He is in his sixth season with the organization, spending one season as an assistant for Detroit (2011-12) and three seasons as head coach of the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins (2012-15). With the Griffins, Blashill led the club to the three most successful seasons in franchise history, winning a 2013 and being named the 2014 AHL Coach of the Year. Twenty-four players who skated for him in Grand Rapids went on to play at least one NHL game. Blashill also won a championship during his first-ever season as a head coach with the USHL's Ice in 2008-09. He coached the Ice for two seasons before serving one season as head coach at Western Michigan. A former goaltender at Ferris State, he got his coaching start at his alma mater (1998-02) as an assistant and served in the same role for from 2002-08. He was born in Detroit and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
