It was Kobasew’s 19th career game- winning goal. *Craig Adams, who was appearing in his 800th NHL game, scored the 50th goal of his NHL career. *Olli Maatta made his NHL debut along the blue line, blocking three shots and recording one on goal while posting an even rating in 14:44 minutes. *With Kris Letang sidelined, Paul Martin paced the team with 24:26 minutes; Matt Niskanen had one assist and led the team with a plus-2 rating and five blocked shots; Brooks Orpik was plus-1 with four hits and four blocked shots. *Pittsburgh went 32-22 (59%) on faceoffs, led by Sidney Crosby who was 15-7 (68%).

EXACTING REVENGE For the second-straight game the Penguins will be looking to exact revenge on their opponent based upon last year’s season series. Tonight’s opponent, the Buffalo Sabres, were one of just two teams (New Jersey was the other) to post winning records against Pittsburgh in 2012-13. The Sabres went 2-1 against the Penguins, with both wins coming at CONSOL Energy Center. The first of Buffalo’s two wins –a 4-1 win on April 2 –ended Pittsburgh’s 15-game winning streak. Pittsburgh’s lone victory last year was a 4-3 win on Feb. 17 on a Paul Martin game-winning goal. In the season series, Chris Kunitz led the Penguins with four points (1G- 3A), with Pascal Dupuis scoring a team-best two goals.

PROTECT THIS HOUSE The Penguins look to continue their home dominance tonight against the Sabres. Since the beginning of last season, the Penguins have gone 19-6 in 25 games at CONSOL Energy Center. That ties them with the Blackhawks and for most home wins in the NHL during that stretch. Since CONSOL Energy Center opened during the 2010-11 season, Pittsburgh has posted a 73-30-4 (.701 pct.) home record. The Penguins’ 73 home wins during that span is the highest total in the NHL –three more than second-place Chicago (70). Pittsburgh’s .701 points percentage is the top figure in the Eastern Conference and the third-highest in the NHL behind Vancouver (.708) and San Jose (.706).

NEARLY UNBEATABLE Pittsburgh’s impressive stretch of winning hockey at CONSOL Energy Center is due in large part to the quality netminding it has received from Marc-Andre Fleury. In his last 16 home starts dating back to Feb. 2 of last season, Fleury has gone 15-1 with a 1.71 goals-against average (27 GA/946 MIN) and a .937 save percentage (404 saves/431 shots). During this stretch, Fleury has allowed two or fewer goals in 11 of the 16 games. His only home loss was a 4-2 setback to Buffalo on April 23 when he stopped 29 of 32 shots.

PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF Sidney Crosby scored the Penguins’ second goal on Thursday night against New Jersey –the first time he has tallied on opening night since a 3-2 win against the Rangers on Oct. 2, 2009 at Mellon Arena. In his last 18 full regular-season games dating back to Feb. 24 of last season, Crosby has at least one point in 16 games, tallying a total of 32 points (9G-23A) for an average of 1.68 points per game. **(Excluding March 30 when he was injured 51 second into his first shift)** Crosby enters tonight’s game with a 14-game point streak against the Buffalo Sabres that dates back to Dec. 29, 2007. He has eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points in those contests. During his career, Crosby has collected at least one point in 20 of 22 games against the Sabres.

NUMBERS AGAINST THE SABRES The Penguins enter tonight having scored a total of 44 goals in their past 13 games against the Sabres (9-4 record), including three or more goals in eight of the 13 contests. As a result, several Penguins carry impressive recent point totals against the Sabres into tonight:

*Evgeni Malkin has a six-game point streak against the Sabres dating back to Dec. 17, 2011 (4G-7A-11PTS). He has 28 points (7G- 21A) over his last 18 meetings (1.56 avg.) *Chris Kunitz has six points (2G-4A) in his last six games *Pascal Dupuis has 12 points (4G-8A) in his last 14 games –including at least one point in nine of 14 meetings *Chuck Kobasew has six points (3G-3A) with two game-winning goals over his past eight games *James Neal has eight points (5G-3A) in his last eight games *Brandon Sutter has nine points (5G-4A) over his last 11 games

DID YOU KNOW… Pittsburgh has won 16 of its past 18 home games at CONSOL Energy Center dating back to Feb. 22, 2013. During that stretch the Buffalo Sabres are the lone team to defeat the Penguins, having done so twice near the tail end of last season on April 2 (4-1) and April 23 (4-2). The last team other than Buffalo to beat the Penguins at home during the regular season was the Philadelphia Flyers (6-5) on Feb. 20, 2013.

TONIGHT’S GAME SABRES at PENGUINS -This is the first of three meetings between the Sabres and Penguins this season. -Last meeting: Buffalo defeated Pittsburgh, 4-2, in Pittsburgh on April 23. -The Sabres are 4-6-0 in their last 10 games vs. the Penguins; 4-6-0 on the road. -This is the 174th game all-time between Buffalo and Pittsburgh; Buffalo has a 64-68-41 series record. -The Sabres are 24-44-19 on the road against the Penguins all-time.

THIS DAY IN SABRES HISTORY •The Sabres are 4-2-1 all-time on October 5. •October 5, 2000: J-P Dumont scores in his first game with the Sabres, a season-opening, 4-2 win at home against the Chicago Blackhawks. •October 5, 2005: Thomas Vanek makes his NHL debut in a season-opening, 6-4 home win against the New York Islanders, recording an assist.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW •October is the Sabres’ second best month since 2005-06; they have a 38-22-6 October record (.621) in that span, including a 0-2-0 record so far this season. •With their win the last time these teams met, the Sabres won consecutive regular-season road games against the Penguins for the first time since they won both games in Pittsburgh in 2005-06. It was just the fifth time in franchise history the Sabres have won two or more consecutive games in Pittsburgh. Tonight, the Sabres will look to win a third consecutive road game in Pittsburgh for just the second time in franchise history (last: four straight, 1/5/80 to 2/21/81). •Thomas Vanek leads all Sabres with 20 points (12+8) in 28 career games against the Penguins. •Several Sabres were point-per-game players against the Penguins last season: Vanek (2 GP, 3+2), Hodgson (4 GP, 2+2), Pysyk (2 GP, 0+3), Ott (3 GP, 3+0), Porter (2 GP, 2+0)

WELCOME TO BUFFALO With his goal on Wednesday at DET, Zemgus Girgensons became the first Sabres player to score in his NHL debut since TJ Brennan did so on Nov. 23, 2011 vs. BOS. The Sabres have now had a newly acquired player score in each of their last three season-openers: Steve Ott (Jan. 20, 2013 vs. PHI) and Ville Leino (Oct. 7, 2011 vs. ANA). Each player scored on his first shot of his Sabres career.

YOUTH MOVEMENT With Zemgus Girgensons, Mikhail Grigorenko and Rasmus Ristolainen playing on Wednesday at DET, the Sabres have already dressed three teenagers during the course of a season for the first time since 1995-96, when they had five (Jay McKee, Martin Biron, , Vaclav Varada, Curtis Brown) suit up for the team. If Nikita Zadorov (currently sidelined with a finger injury) sees time this season, the Sabres would be the first NHL team to ice four rookies since those 1995-96 Sabres. Florida (4) and Winnipeg (6) also dressed at least four teenagers that season.

BACK-TO-BACK Tonight’s game wraps up Buffalo’s first of 13 sets of back-to-back games this season after a 1-0 loss vs. OTT last night. The Sabres were 4-3-2 in the first game of back-to-back sets in 2012-13 and 3-5-1 in the second. Buffalo’s point breakdown in last season’s back- to-back sets was: four points (2), three points (1), two points (2), one point (2) and zero points (2).

FEARLESS LEADERS •Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott have each been selected to wear the captain’s “C” for the Sabres in 2013-14, becoming the 17th and 18th full-season captains in franchise history (excludes rotating captaincies in 2003-04 and 2007-08). •In total, 23 different players have previously served as captain of the Sabres for at least a one-month period; the duo will bring the total to 25. •Vanek will serve as captain for the team’s home games and Ott will serve as captain on the road. The Sabres last employed a two- captain rotation in 2005-06 and 2006-07, when Chris Drury and Daniel Briere served as co-captains. •Christian Ehrhoff has been named the team’s lone alternate captain; he will wear the “A” in every game, with one of Ott or Vanek wearing the other.

2013 PRESEASON •Buffalo finished the preseason with a 4-2-1 record; 2-0-1 at home, 2-2-0 on the road. •Foligno (3+1), Girgensons (3+1) and Grigorenko (2+2) tied for the team lead with four points each. •Ryan Miller was 1-2-0 with a 2.40 GAA and .929 SV%; Jhonas Enroth was 1-0-1 with a 1.95 GAA and .932 SV%. •The Sabres were 1/26 (3.8%) on the PP; and 29/32 (90.6%) on the PK.

2013-14 ROSTER NOTES Of the 23 players on Buffalo’s opening night roster: •13 were originally drafted by the Sabres -- eight were first-round Buffalo selections (Vanek, 2003; Stafford, 2004; Myers and Ennis, 2008; Pysyk, 2010; Grigorenko and Girgensons, 2012; Ristolainen, 2013) and three were second-round picks (Tallinder [re- acquired via trade], 1997; Enroth and Weber, 2006) •Six were acquired in trades: Ehrhoff, Hodgson, Ott, Larsson, Tallinder, McBain •Five were signed as free agents: McCormick, Leino, Flynn, Scott, Porter •18 played in Buffalo at some point last season •Five are new to the Sabres this season: Rasmus Ristolainen was selected by the Sabres 8th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft; Zemgus Girgensons will make his Sabres debut after spending his first pro season with the (AHL) in 2012-13; Henrik Tallinder, Jamie McBain, and Johan Larsson were each acquired in separate trades.
