The Telescope News and Covid-19 Thank you to all readers for your generosity

In the last Telescope issue, you will have seen that there are unexpected costs in getting the Telescope to you during the Coronavirus pandemic and we asked for your help. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our readers in donating to the Telescope during these difficult times. We are grateful to you all. Some of you may have tried to donate online via JustGiving and experienced difficulties as, to our surprise, the Telescope donations page first appeared, then disappeared from the JustGiving site. We are sorry this happened - we shall not be using JustGiving in future! As the pandemic continues, so do the Telescope's additional costs so if you feel able to donate, please do. You can do so in one of the following ways. Phone Tony on 01691 683667 to donate by credit or debit card. Send a cheque, payable to Telescope News to Angela Clarke, Brindlewood, Vicarage Lane, Kinnerley SY10 8DE

There is some more good news. The Telescope made a successful application to Shropshire County Council's Covid-19 Small Grants programme. This is in recognition of the Telescope's publicising local information about the Coronavirus restrictions and helplines. We shall continue to do this as the situation evolves, of course. The Telescope Team is grateful for this grant as it is enabling us to get the Telescope News to all households in our villages while we are unable to call on our wonderful volunteer distributors.

Finally… Our aim again this month is to keep you informed about initiatives within our communities, provide a little distraction and hopefully make you smile. Enjoy!

To all deliverers and potential deliverers The Telescope team would like to thank you for your extreme patience while we sort out the delivery of the magazine during the Covid 19 Lockdown. We hope that, by the August edition, we shall be able to revert to local delivery.

If you are a deliverer and prepared to resume your duties at the end of July, many, many thanks. If you would rather not resume delivering, that is fine. We understand perfectly. Either way, please would all deliverers notify Angela Clarke of their intentions, either by email [email protected] Or by phone 01691 683881 (if she’s out partying a message can be left) before 10th July.

If you are a member of our villages and would like to volunteer to deliver Telescopes to local people, usually about 20 copies a month, please ring Angela Clarke on 01691 683881.

Many thanks to all involved in delivering Telescope News. Angela

Once more thank you to our NHS and to all on the front line during this long Covid-19 crisis. Thanks also to those who are working so hard to get the country going again.

Anglican Church Lockdown news Greetings from the Rector July 2021 No, that isn’t a typo. This month’s message, as we come out of lockdown, is one possible vision for what the future might look like. Have a read, then have a think, what would your ideal future look like? Lets start the conversation. This month’s school leavers service marks the end of an incredible year for our local school. Having been postponed last year our Village Extravaganza makes a welcome return, with a weekend of activities celebrating the gifts and talents of our various villages. Our community café celebrates six months since opening, and the money raised is helping to support local charities. Our local pubs have re-established themselves as amongst the best in the country, and we’re delighted that our local shops continue to flourish in these difficult times. Since our schools and churches reopened last year it has been a difficult time for all of us, but we kept the community spirit and neighbourliness that got us through the pandemic and our village communities are all stronger for it. Our local cricket club continues to inspire and amaze us, and whilst we can never forget the lost season of 2020, 2021 might just be our best year yet. August’s community Arts festival promises to be a glorious celebration of the amazing local gifts and talents- with workshops and activities for all ages. I never realised how many talented people there are in our villages.

What has moved me the most during this past year is the way our communities have continued to support those made vulnerable through illness, lost income and bereavements. Those experiencing surplus have continued to support those in need and our communities are thriving because we look after one another. We have perhaps the most unprecedented opportunity to shape the future of our villages we will ever have, as we come out of lockdown, what would you like that future to look like? Yours in Christ, Revd Chris.

Online Anglican services during the lockdown During the next few weeks and months there will be no services in our churches because of the coronavirus On Sunday mornings services will be streamed live at 9.45 am from: https://www.facebook.com/kinnerleybenefice/

Mothers’ Union is an international Christian charity founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner. It seeks to support families worldwide. Its members are not all mothers or even all women. Our aims and objectives are to uphold Christ's teaching, support parents, and help those whose family life has met with adversity. Prayer underpins our organisation. We have over 4 million members in 84 countries worldwide. Kinnerley MU has been in existence for approximately 100 years. We meet monthly for fellowship with a speaker with a Christian theme. As a group we knit, sew for our local neonatal unit. We provide funds to send families on holiday who would struggle to get away. We provide clothing for the homeless and provide bags of essentials for new mums who are struggling. We collect used ink cartridges to be recycled, raising funds for projects here and abroad. To be a member you need to be confirmed into the Christian Church and abide by the aims and objectives. We meet on the first Thursday of the month in Kinnerley church at 2pm. You would be made very welcome.

Sadly there will be no Mothers’ Union meeting until the current Covid 19 crisis is over. Keep well and safe all of you. Sian

Have you any spare wool? I am knitting blankets and hats for premature babies at Telford and Nuneaton hospitals. I will come and collect from your driveway. Thank you.—Please ring Lesley Groom 01691 682370.

Can anyone recall the “Cooking Cannon?” He came to give a demonstration at Ruyton XI Towns Group WI meeting in 1986. The Competition was “A Wig”.

Judith Pearce from Kinnerley WI made one and Kinnerley WI won the 1st prize.

As you can see from the photograph she deserved to win. Her wig was all made from cotton wool.

KINNERLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWS JULY 2020 The Parish Council has recommenced formal meetings remotely using the Zoom platform, starting with the meeting arranged for 22nd June at 7pm. This arrangement will continue for the foreseeable future, and will follow the existing calendar of planned Parish Council meetings for the year. There will be the facility for members of the public to view the meeting and to contribute in the public participation part of the agenda. Instructions for how to do this will also be available on the website www.kinnerleyparishcouncil.org.uk

If you have an interest in a current planning application and wish to communicate your thoughts to the Parish Council, or wish to raise any other matter relating to the Parish, please contact the Parish Clerk in the first instance on [email protected].

DEATH OF COUNCILLOR JOHN PINDER It is with great sadness that the Parish Council heard of the death of Councillor John Pinder on 9th June. He had been an active member of the Parish Council for many years, taking a keen and vibrant interest in his local community and the wider parish. His detailed local knowledge will be greatly missed. The Chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr Nick Barclay, put on record his grateful thanks to Cllr Pinder for his service, and also for the many years of personal friendship they had shared.

The vacancy for a councillor in Edgerley Ward will be advertised in due course.

PLANNING MATTERS IN MAY One new application was determined under delegated powers in the May period, and comments submitted to the planning authority, , as follows:- 20/01791/FUL - Royal Hill Inn, Caravan Park, Melverley Road, Edgerley, SY10 8ES Partial Revision of internal layout and formation of new dedicated vehicular access to serve the existing holiday caravan park.

SUPPORT The Parish Council wishes to support a successful local business and we support the creation of the proposed new access dedicated to the holiday caravan park. However, in connection with the proposed revision of the internal layout, concerns have been expressed by parishioners about the consequences of flooding and levels of occupancy. We also note that there are currently no conditions as to numbers of pitches or the mix between static pitches and touring pitches. The site does become cut

12

KINNERLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWS (cont) off in times of flood, causing off-site parking of cars on the lanes, and increasing the risk to those unfamiliar with flood waters. We suggest that conditions be applied in order to regulate the numbers of static and touring pitches, and to limit the opening of the site to the stated season of March to November, bearing in mind the provisions of SAMDev policy MD11, particularly paragraphs 9 and 11.

KINNERLEY PLAY AREA The improvements and repairs to the Parish Council children’s play area to the rear of Kinnerley Parish Hall are now complete, barring a few small snagging items. This has included work to improve drainage in the fenced play area and to replace the chipped bark surface cover.

However it should be noted that the play area equipment still may not be used until Government guidance to the contrary is received.

PAVEMENT FROM MOUNTSIDE TO VILLAGE CENTRE Councillors have been made aware of problems with this pathway on many occasions. This includes longitudinal cracks creating unevenness in the surface of the pavement, overgrowing hedge, and soil erosion. Recent BT works have added to the problems with a poor infilling repair. This pavement is a trip hazard for anyone with mobility difficulties and has been reported on a number of occasions to the Environmental Maintenance Team at Shropshire Council dating back to February 2019. At one point it appeared the pavement had been inspected, when yellow markings appeared around the worst cracks, but these eventually washed away with no further action taken. Councillors are very concerned at the apparent lack of response from Shropshire Council, and want to assure local residents that they are pressing as hard as possible for the situation to be improved.

NEXT MEETING Remote meeting dates will follow the existing agreed calendar of meeting dates as far as is possible, i.e.:- 27th July at 7pm.

Please log on to the website for a downloadable agenda and instructions on how to participate in the meeting in the week before the scheduled meeting.

Pentre and Edgerley Millennium Garden With joy we can announce that Pentre and Edgerley Millennium Garden has had most of its makeover completed. Along with a revamped notice board we are looking smart again. A big thank you to the Parish Council for its support and to all the many volunteers who came to help. We also give thanks to the community for their donation of plants and to DJ construction for taking on the job. It has been lovely to hear so many cyclists and walkers stopping to have a look or take a rest on the bench.

Wonderful Tunes

You see- mad look- You might be going around and I might want to stand in the road with this wonderful tune in your head and shout: that you heard- I believe in life! and maybe I heard the same tune And you might be brushing the alley and feel the same way and thinking: only neither of us know I know there is more! because all this goes on I just know it! in our heads. And your song and my song sing on in I might think: silence That sunset makes me high! because it’s a silent world And you might think: at least- when it comes to I’ve never seen this before! sunsets and wonderful tunes.. And then hurry indoors before anyone catches sight of that Shirley McDermott

Considering this was the first time a virtual meeting had been held it went very well with one member of the public present along with Cllr Matt Lee also in attendance. Cllr Sandy Edwards was elected Chairman of the Parish Council along with Cllr Dave Roberts as Vice Chairman for 2020-21 2019-20 Accounts The 2019-20 accounts were reviewed and approved along with the internal audit report and Annual Governance and Accountability Return for 2019-20, the period for the inspection of accounts by electors will begin on 15.6.20. A request has been received to install gates at the Rolly Farm end of the village along with another vehicle activated sign and this will be looked into however there are concerns about the width of the verge in this location. Neighbourhood Fund Following the recent housing development in the Parish, the Council now holds a Neighbourhood Fund of £18,000 which is to be used for the development of facilities in the parish. Current ideas being considered are the purchase of some play equipment for the Amenity Area or traffic calming along the main road through the parish. However before any decision is made the Parish Council plans to seek the views of all residents on the best way to spend this money; a consultation will hopefully take place in the Autumn. Future Parish Council Meetings Until further notice all future Parish Council meetings will be held using the Zoom virtual meeting platform which can be accessed using the internet or by telephoning in. MAESBROOK

MAESBROOK GARDENING CLUB Just a short note to keep you up to date; it looks as if most things for the year will be cancelled. What a pity as we had such a good selection of things booked. Thank you to Colin Lawrence for selling loads of plants for the club. The trip to the Autumn Show at Malvern at the end of September is in the air. Perhaps the AGM could be combined with a cheese and wine and produce sale? We need to find a couple of new speakers for January and February; - any thoughts please contact the Committee. Best wishes to all members Gillian Mansell 682268

Every house has a history Mrs Ratcliffe – headmistress of the school – and her family built (1912) and lived in Ainsdale House, and several generations of the Ratcliffe family lived there until the present owners moved in in 1984. Stone plaques set in the exterior walls commemorate various family members. Even a comparatively modern house like this has its history and quirks – a mysterious window opening just inches above the floor level in one of the bedrooms – blocked doorways in peculiar places – caricatures of workmen drawn on the wall before wallpaper was put up – names written in wet cement in one of the sheds, alongside a cat's pawprints. An old map shows that there was a building – presumably a cottage – down at the end of the garden, where there is still an old pump and well. Red quarry tiles occasionally show up through the turf of the lawn. It looks as though one of our sheds has been built on the footprint of this old cottage. The brick floor may be original. Other outbuildings were found to contain the remains of a pigsty and a stable, both of them looking very much older than the present house. Working in the garden brings treasures to the surface – the copper face of a sundial, a tiny china milk jug, presumably lost from a teddy bear’s picnic, and the bones of a much loved pet dog. Maybe one day a future owner will find my wedding ring, which I lost thirty years ago, and will wonder who it belonged to. Digging out a vegetable patch just adjacent to the schoolyard fence, I found several empty ink bottles and old fashioned lemonade bottles, which presumably came from the school. In the same patch I also unearthed a couple of “handbag sized” brandy bottles …. perhaps teaching was as stressful then as it is now..... Wendy Gough

MELVERLEY Well another month has gone by. What is there to report? It doesn't look like we'll be having a Bar B Q this year so unless there are any major changes, the next event we have planned is currently for 19th of September which is another social evening. Fingers crossed. We are looking forward to the time when we can put a big sign up on the gate to say our next event is happening. Last year was a great success for us, so it's a shame we've had to put things on hold for a while and it also means we are not currently receiving any income to maintain the hall except for a few regular monthly donations. I have mentioned this before, but if anyone is happy to donate just one or two pounds a month on a regular basis towards the upkeep, it's always gratefully received and enables us to plan for things that need to be done with confidence that it can be covered. The hall is for the benefit of the whole village and is one of the only two remaining community places (the other being the church) that we have. Since I have lived here, we've lost the Chapel, the Post Office and the Pub and there are probably some of you that don't realise there was also a shop and another pub in the village many years ago. I'm sure we'll get there in the end as long as everyone stays well.

PAPER BANK This is now almost full and with one last push from everyone to clear out those papers and magazines, we should be able to get it collected.... and start all over again!

Some of us have been down to the village hall and done a little bit of weeding to try and keep the place looking tidy. If you like a bit of gardening and want to give us a hand anytime you're passing, 5 minutes of your time and a couple of weeds would be much appreciated. Many hands make light work!

How's everyone's garden coming along? We've been enjoying home grown lettuce, radishes, cucumber & potatoes so far. Peas & carrots not far behind and the garlic looks almost ready.

20

MELVERLEY Amazingly, our outdoor tomatoes survived the harsh frost we had and I'm putting that down to the heat that came from the walls where they are growing but unfortunately the beans took a beating. We've now planted more and they are coming well.

And finally....

Remember Colin? ️ Well, we think he is still here with us as there is a small squirrel running around the garden and when we shout out his name he stops and looks and seems quite tame. Unfortunately he seems to have brought a few friends with him and there have been times when there are at least four at once in the garden devouring all the nuts and seeds. I am pleased to say though, that three little blue tits fledged from the nest box on the shed and we were pleased to be able to watch them leave. Karen

NATURE NOTES Last Sunday (7th) while we were checking our trees and flowers by the river, the fields around us were being cut for silage. I don't know how they knew but all of a sudden the sky was filled with buzzards and at least 8 red kites. I know they aren't always popular but it was a lovely warm day and amazing to see them flying and swooping down over the fields. I can remember not that many years ago, that it was an event just to hear a buzzard never mind see them and kites too. Wildlife is certainly changing around here. Obviously they were looking for their dinner! Karen Davies

PENTRE AND EDGERLEY

Autojumble Hi readers, the answer to last month’s question is a little on the long side. The MG car was known as the MG Featherlite Saloon and was nicknamed "OLD SPECKLED HEN." To commemorate 50 years of the MG factory at Abingdon,. Morland Brewery, also at Abingdon, brewed an I P A style beer calling it OLD SPECKLED HEN. It became so popular that Morlands had to close down a line brewing lager to cope with demand. If you bought a can of OLD SPECKLED HEN at the time the story was printed on the can. For this month another MG that gained a nickname. It was an MGB registration number GRX 307 D that was prepared at the MG competition department.

Among its exploits in 1966 it finished the Monte Carlo Rally but not with a place, but to finish was quite an achievement. It won the G.T. category of the Targa Florio route in Sicily. At the Marathon de la Route at the Nürburgring, it won outright averaging 66-8 MPH for 84 consecutive hours. In 1967 it went to Sebring for the 12 hour race and finished 2nd in its class. *The question is “What was its nickname?” Fact. In the post war years MG used an advertising slogan" SAFETY FAST". A TRIBUTE TO JOHN PINDER

It is with regret that I have to tell you that John has passed away on the 9th.June. The Telescope News would like to extend our condolences to Sylvia and his family on their loss. John delivered the Telescope News to many of you in Edgerley. Over the years he was involved in many of the Pentre and Edgerley fund raising activities. He, along with Lorraine Jones, recently assisted in obtaining a grant for the Millennium Garden. He also served as the parish councillor for this area and was always available for advice and help. He will be missed by all of us. Geoff Shepherd

Family Tribute to John Pinder It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of John Pinder. He died peacefully at home on Tuesday 9th. June. Aged 77. John will be greatly missed by his wife Sylvia and his children Fiona, Andrew and Emma, and Polly the Cairn Terrier. We would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support and hope to celebrate John's life later on in the year, at Corner House Farm, with those who knew him, once the Covid 19 restrictions are lifted. Instead of flowers we know that John would prefer donations in his name to his favourite charity "Hounds for Heroes."

Please note that deliveries will be left outside your front door or in another suitably arranged venue. Please bear with us during this difficult time for everyone. Rest assured we are doing everything we can to ensure that we continue to offer the highest standard of care to all of our patients.

Facebook We now have our own Facebook page. You can find it by searching Knockin Medical Centre. We are posting updates relating to our service provision and any information relating to the current pandemic. Please “Like” and “Share” with as many of your friends as possible. IT Upgrade Thank you to all of you that were so understanding on 4th June when we had a lot of IT work carried out here which meant a slight disruption to our phone and internet that also impacted on how we were able to operate that afternoon. This work will result in us having a much better internet connection in the future. Please keep a look out on Facebook for notice of the final step which will again mean a small break in our usual service. I anticipate this to be at the end of June or beginning of July. We have also been able to relocate the phone from by the front Reception window to improve patient confidentiality Prescriptions We now have a white post box by the front door of the surgery for you to drop in your repeat prescription requests if you are unable to do this online. You can drop in

24

requests at any time of the day. The box will be emptied every day at 2 pm. We are still experiencing some difficulties in obtaining stock due to the pandemic so we would still request that you leave 7 full days between ordering and collecting your medication. Please try not to ring us “just to check” if your medication is ready. We are receiving a high volume of these calls and it is taking up a lot of the admin and dispensary team’s time. Please be aware that if we are experiencing difficulty in obtaining your item, Ann will send you a text or contact you. If you hear nothing please arrange collection 7 days after you request. We would also request that if possible you request via one of the online platforms. Ann and her team are working tirelessly to ensure that everyone can have the medication that they need. Please do not ask for items more than one week in advance. New Patients We are still taking on new patients living in our practice area. If you would like to register with us, you can visit our website or just telephone the surgery, one of the Admin team will be able to sort out your registration. We may ask you to have a telephone appointment with one of the team if you are living with a long term condition or have regular medication. Staff News Dr Murad will be leaving us at the end of June, we were very pleased that her time with us was extended. We will not be having a new Registrar until the beginning of August, we will then be joined by Dr Busola Omoseli, we hope that you will all make her feel part of Knockin like you did with Dr Murad. Dr Omoseli will be with us until the end of November 2020. Contact Details We are always trying to keep your details up to date. Please can you ensure that you tell the receptionist if you have changed your mobile number? This means we can send you a text message with details of future appointments and or specific health information. We can also keep you up to date with any advice regarding the current pandemic. Test Results As you can appreciate we have a lot of phone calls in the mornings. If you are ringing to find out the results of tests or investigations please can you ring in an afternoon, preferably between 2 and 6 pm. This gives the Doctor more time to view and comment on your result prior to your phoning. With the NHS App or the other online services can view results of blood tests and x-rays online without having to make an appointment to see the GP.

I would again, like to end on a positive note and say a huge thank you to all of our patients for being so understanding during this difficult period. We have received a lot of positive feedback from many of you which is very much appreciated.

SCHOOL NEWS

The start of June was a challenging time for staff and pupils at Kinnerley as the phased re-integration of pupils from selected year groups was begun after the school closed on 20th March due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Pupils from the youngest and oldest year groups and children whose parents are “key workers” were on site at Kinnerley from the first of June and the children and staff had to adapt quickly to the many new routines and procedures which had to be put in place to ensure that staff and pupils were able to remain safe while at school.

The children were brilliant and responded fantastically well as staff worked hard to ensure that they felt secure and happy in spite of the challenges presented by the current situation. It was good to see the children enjoying not only the opportunity to see and interact with their friends and teachers, but also enjoying their lessons too.

As well as being back at school teaching and supporting the pupils who were on site, teachers and teaching assistants also continued to provide online resources, tasks and activities for the children who are not yet eligible to return to school, or who had chosen not to return, to help them to continue their learning at home. Welfare calls to these families also continued to provide support and maintain the important connection between school and home at this difficult and unusual time.

Once again, it is impossible to say at the moment what changes and new challenges the coming weeks will bring but everyone at Kinnerley is committed to providing support for

26

the whole school ‘family’ while following Government advice and guidance about what steps should be taken and when.

With best wishes from all at Kinnerley School. Corinne

All best wishes to the teachers, staff and pupils returning to Kinnerley School and the parents for supporting them. It is so encouraging to see a small start of life after Lockdown and eventually we hope a retreat of the Covid 19 virus. Good luck to you all.

The Llanymynech Amateur Dramatic Society

During Lockdown So what has been happening with The LADS during these unusual times? You may think as an active drama group we haven’t been able to do much …… well you’d be wrong. During lockdown we have managed to Zoom play readings, sampling some of our original plays, written by Marg Kynaston as well as reading through more well known scrips such as ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ by Oscar Wilde. We have also been actively performing and recording monologues, poems and other pieces to go on The Holroyd Community Theatre site. The Holroyd is a new theatre at Morton Hall school, it is fantastic and we are delighted to be involved as a drama community link. We are looking forward to performing there in the future.

KNOCKIN TELESCOPE IN LOCKDOWN & AFTER

The more eagle-eyed amongst you may have noticed that the Knockin telescope has been in lockdown too. The first picture shows it during lockdown, the second was taken on 10th June and the 3rd on 13th June.

Many thanks to Caroline for her photographs. She wrote to Jodrell Bank and Dr Rob Beswick replied, confirming that there had been a temporary pause in observations with all their telescopes. He said that we will begin to see an increased level of movement and activity as they are now in the process of gradually restarting these facilities.

Chris the Postie cheering us up in Lockdown & after

Back in April, Chris Holgate who delivers to Kinnerley, Knockin and surrounding villages agreed to wear colourful, lively shirts on his round and invited donations for Hope House children's Hospice. This cheered up the residents on his round so much it was suggested he wear a dress. Chris agreed if the donations reached £500 and that he would top it with a Dolly Parton wig if £1000 was raised. Villagers rose to the challenge and not only hit the £1000 target before the end of April but continued to lend shirts for the daily rounds. Donations continued to pour in.

On 7th May (any connection with a full moon that night?) Chris lived up to his promise as the photograph shows. By then, the total raised by donations and employers' fund-matching schemes was almost £4500. By the time the Telescope went to press (13th May) it had reached an amazing £5510. To date the total has reached £7343. Well done, Chris. We always knew you were a star!

If you’d like to add to the total, it’s not too late: to sponsor Chris, visit hopehouse.org.uk/donate and mark your donation ‘Postie Chris’

ANOTHER LOCAL TELESCOPE When we first moved to Maesbrook just over four years ago we were intrigued by the title of the community magazine, because the word ‘ Telescope’ had a particular significance to us at that time. As well as buying a house in the area we had recently been involved in buying a horse. His name was TELESCOPE. Telescope wasn’t just a horse, he was a thoroughbred racehorse - and a very good one. His wins included big races at Royal Ascot and York. His racing record, along with a fantastic physique and sensational pedigree (thoroughbreds do like to boast about their ancestors - Telescope’s daddy is the greatest sire in the world today, Galileo, named after someone whose fame arose from his immense success in designing and using telescopes) marked him out as a prospective stallion. Since we breed thoroughbreds, with the aim of producing top-class Jumps racehorses, choosing the right stallion is an important part of the equation. In September 2015 we were on holiday in Turkey when the wonders of the internet revealed to us that Telescope had suffered an injury whilst in training and would have to be retired. Immediately we rang our friend Peter Hockenhull, who with his wife Emma owns Shade Oak Stud in Bagley (one of the country’s leading studs aimed at producing Jumps horses) to suggest that we go to see Telescope on our return from holiday to investigate buying him as a stallion. The arrangements were made; Telescope was viewed – sore but still magnificent – and after a tricky few weeks of negotiation he was purchased as a stallion for Shade Oak Stud. At the time we moved into our new home Telescope moved into his; but, whilst we were involved in arranging improvements to home and garden, Telescope had the even more arduous task of making his lady friends pregnant. A popular thoroughbred stallion tends to be a very busy boy from 14th February, when the ‘covering’ (mating) season begins, up to early July, when he takes a well-earned rest and returns to a life of celibacy until Valentine’s Day once more beckons. Artificial insemination is strictly forbidden in thoroughbreds, so it all has to be done Nature’s way. In his first season Telescope entertained over 100 ladies and this can take a bit of getting used to for a young stallion. This work programme has continued in each of the subsequent years. As he often tells us when we go to visit: “It’s a

32

tough job, but someone’s got to do it.” Telescope’s oldest produce are now three years old and Jumps horses mainly begin to race as four or five year olds, so we are yet to see any of his offspring leaping over hurdles or fences and striding majestically to the finishing post at Cheltenham. But over the next few years we expect many of them to represent him with honour, some hopefully in our pink and purple colours with red cap. So look out for the baby Telescopes if you go racing in the winter months, for they all began life in Shropshire! Bryan & Dorte Mayoh

Hints on Pronunciation for Foreigners….. (From Shropshire WI County News, March 2001)

I take it you already know Of tough and bough and cough and dough? Others may stumble but not you On hiccough, thorough, laugh and through? Well done! And now you wish, perhaps, To learn of less familiar traps?

Beware of heard, a dreadful word That looks like beard and sounds like bird, And dead: it’s said like bed, not bead – For goodness sake don’t call it “deed”! Watch out for meat and great and threat (They rhyme with suite and straight and debt)

A moth is not a moth in mother Nor both in bother, broth in brother, And here is not a match for there Nor dear and fear for bear and pear, And then there’s dose and rose and lose – Just look them up – and goose and choose, And cork and work and card and ward, And font and front and word and sword, And do and go and thwart and cart – Come, come, I’ve hardly made a start! A dreadful language? Man alive! I’d mastered it when I was five!

A moving experience, and putting things into perspective! How lucky we were to get away from the Shropshire floods for a week of sunshine in Madeira. At the end of our first full day we ambled into the local village of Sao Vicente and serendipitously stumbled upon a baroque concert about to happen in the church there. After grabbing a quick but delicious typical bite of scabbard fish, chips and fried banana at the café in the square outside, we joined the full house of those we had watched trooping into the church. There, we basked in what we later learnt was a rare outing in Madeira of the Funchal Baroque Ensemble, playing sublime music by Corelli, then Pergolesi, all amongst a highly decorated, be-statued and be-candled setting. However, part- way into the third piece, an intricate recorder concerto by the lesser- known Sammartini, the music was mysteriously accompanied by a loud rumbling noise and considerable but brief shaking and, when the church started quickly to empty, it dawned on us that we were in the middle of an earthquake! Could the church be about to fall down? The quick, albeit unpanicked exit of the congregation suggested this might be a frequent occurrence in these parts. But as we waited in the square hoping the concert would resume (it didn’t!) everyone was immediately on their mobile phones finding out that it was a 5.2 quake on the Richter scale and was the first in Madeira for 45 years. It turned out the concert was being videoed and you can amuse yourselves by watching the evacuation on YouTube by Googling “Madeira concert earthquake” (though we are out of shot in the left-hand aisle). It was talked about for the rest of the week, though there was no discernible damage, and we were doubly lucky to fly out at the end of the week just before the country locked-down, to be immobilised by the pestilence back home! How difficult it is to keep a sense of perspective in these strange times. A 5.2 scale earthquake was what the Bishop’s Castle/Clun earthquake was in 1990, which many readers might have experienced. But, on the logarithmic Richter scale, it was only about one five-hundredth as bad as

38

the 7.9 scale (proper) quake that our daughter Ros experienced in New Zealand at the end of 2016. And as for pestilence and perspective, the Office for National Statistics has just published an article on the history of the UK population over the last one hundred years. It is salutary to realise just how much things have changed within the lifetime of people, many of whom are still alive today, and with it our attitudes to human life and death. The three population pyramids below from that article show the change from the early 1900s, when average life expectancy was 45 for men and 49 for women, 14% of babies did not survive beyond their first birthday, and the most common cause of death was infectious disease (it is now dementia/Alzheimer’s). The UK population in 1900 was about 37 million and is now about 67 million, with some 6-700,000 deaths annually both in 1900 and now.

Keep smiling through this lockdown, national anxiety and Mad Era, as spring unfolds in the biosphere at large, oblivious to Covid-19! Sally and Charles Green

Walking for Health during Lockdown

To help suppress the spread of the Covid19 virus, all Ramblers Walking for Health activities have been suspended – including group walks, social activities and other meetings. All have been stopped until further notice .

Walking for Health

The latest government advice is that all group activities are suspended. The situation changes daily and we look forward to seeing regular and new members soon. We normally offer two walks per month leaving Kinnerley Parish Hall at 10 a.m. Walks will be 1 to 1½ hours long.

You can contact Ken 01691 682727, Dave 01691 682875 or Ann & Charles 01691 683834 for more information. We look forward to seeing you when we can resume our walks. In the meantime, you can find tips on keeping active at home from a variety of sources. Walking for Health website https://www.walkingforhealth.org.uk

KINNERLEY TENNIS COURT The Tennis Court is now open. It is free to use and like last year the gate will be left un- locked. Please respect a limited number of rules such as no playing football on the court whilst the net is up and no bikes. Make good use of this valuable community facility. It is an opportunity for excellent socially distanced exercise! If you need to report any issues please contact either: Tim Hammond (Church House) – 682 780 or Carol Barclay – 682 832

Parish Paths Partnership (P3)

Kinnerley P3 All P3 activities across the county remain closed down for the moment. As this edition of the Telescope goes to press, the council is about to review the situation. Their latest statement reads: - “We will be looking to Government for guidance and also liaising with partners within our sector in order to come up with strategies to get things underway in whatever the new “normal” will look like!” We will use the Kinnerley Footpaths Facebook page to pass on any further updates as and when they arrive. Our regular meetings have been suspended to comply with social distancing requirements but we will contact members with revised dates as soon as conditions allow. We're always happy to welcome new volunteers. Please contact Charles on 07548 283447 or email [email protected]

Knockin P3 From the way the paths have been trodden lately it’s clear that many people are taking advantage of the stile free circular route around Knockin. We have checked that all the gates are working well, but for obvious reasons we have had to put on hold further improvements, but that doesn’t mean we have forgotten them.

For anyone who has not found it, there is now a stile free route from Knockin Hall Farm to Kinnerley.

For any problems, help or suggestions, contact Pam Ward on 01691 682485, [email protected].

Nature Notes Well, what a spring we had! The sunshine went on and on … and on. It’s not really a surprise to learn from the Met Office that May was the sunniest calendar month on record. We had 266 hours of sunshine, exceeding the previous record of 265 hours in June 1957. Perhaps we felt we deserved it after finishing off a drenching winter with record amounts of rain in February. It certainly made lockdown more bearable. Scientists say this period of unusual weather is due to the jet stream holding the fine weather in place, just as it held the winter rainfall in place. It’s not known what influences the behaviour of the jet stream; some suggestions are the rapid warming of the Arctic, or the Indian dipole, an irregular oscillating current in the Indian Ocean. It really is a small world.

During the long, dry period I made sure there was plenty of water available for the creatures who use the garden. As well as the usual water for the birds I filled large terracotta plant saucers and put them near the entrances the hedgehogs use. We also made a small pond (well, to be truthful it’s a tiny pond) with a sloping gravel beach at one end. it’s an escape route for any creature in difficulties and I’ve seen wood mice drink and birds bathe here. I was sure the dog would drink from it/paddle in it/sit down in it but thankfully no; it’s probably too small to bother with. I read of a clever idea for a birdbath – take 1 old paint tray (the sort you use with a roller), cover the bottom with gravel and a few medium-sized pebbles and top up with water. I made one and stood it on the edge of the patio where it gets sunshine and shade at different times of the day. The birds love it - it’s been the most popular bathing place in our garden.

42

Nature Notes (cont.) A friend has a spotted flycatcher nesting in a very exposed place in her garden; on top of four fence posts, which are leaning against a sheltered wall. Unfortunately there are many rooks, ravens, magpies, squirrels and other predators about and she fears for any family that they may try to rear.

This is a picture of our local letterbox at Maesbrook Wood, which epitomises the rural nature of the Parish, as if having a small, wonky letterbox buried in the hedge didn't already epitomise it enough!

We never discovered what species was nesting, probably a robin.
