They excluded the Pinyon/Juniper woodlands and higher elevation plant communities. I have included the same geographical region but also the ants that occur at higher elevations in the desert mountains including the Chuckwalla, Granites, Providence, New York and Clark ranges. Snelling, R and C. George, 1979. The Taxonomy, Distribution and Ecology of California Desert Ants. Report to Calif. Desert Plan Program. Bureau of Land Mgmt. Their keys are substantially modified in the light of more recent literature. Some of the keys include species whose ranges are not known to extend into the deserts. GENERAL HOUSEHOLD PESTS Ants are some of the most ubiquitous insects found in community environments. They thrive indoors and outdoors, wherever they have access to food and water. Ants outdoors are mostly beneficial, as they act as scavengers and decomposers of organic matter, predators of small insects and seed dispersers of certain plants. However, they can protect and encourage honeydew-producing insects such as mealy bugs, aphids and scales that are feed on landscape or indoor plants, and this often leads to increase in numbers of these pests. A well-known feature of ants is their sociality, which is also found in many of their close relatives within the order Hymenoptera, such as bees and wasps. Ant colonies vary widely with the species, and may consist of less than 100 individuals in small concealed spaces, to millions of individuals in large mounds that cover several square feet in area. Functions within the colony are carried out by specific groups of adult individuals called ‘castes’. Most ant colonies have fertile males called “drones”, one or more fertile females called “queens” and large numbers of sterile, wingless females which function as “workers”. Many ant species exhibit polymorphism, which is the existence of individuals with different appearances (sizes) and functions within the same caste. For example, the worker caste may include “major” and “minor” workers with distinct functions, and “soldiers” that are specially equipped with larger mandibles for defense. Almost all functions in the colony apart from reproduction, such as gathering food, feeding and caring for larvae, defending the colony, building and maintaining nesting areas, are performed by the workers. -

We also explore the taxonomy and distribution of Dorymyrmex in Colombia. We list, diagnose, and key nine species in the country, including three new species: Dorymyrmex amazonicus n. sp. Cuezzo & Guerrero, Dorymyrmex xerophylus n. sp. Cuezzo & Guerrero, and Dorymyrmex tuberosus n. sp. Cuezzo & Guerrero. We provide a detailed description of these new species based on the worker caste and, where possible, other castes. All localities where Dorymyrmex was collected or cited in the literature were mapped to provide a graphical view of its range. -

Our surveys yielded a combined total of 34 different ant species: Brachymyrmex cf. depilis, Campon- otus anthrax, C. clarithorax, C. hyatti, C. semitestaceus, C. vicinus, C. sp. near vicinus, C yogi, Cardiocondyla ectopia, Crematogaster califomica, C héspera, C. marioni, C. mormonum, Dorymyrmex bicolor, D. insanus (s.l.), Formica la- sioides, F. moki, Hypoponera opacior, Leptothorax andrei, L. nevadensis, Line- pithema humile, Messor chamberlini, Monomorium ergatogyna, Pheidole califor- nica, P. hyatti, Pogonomyrmex subdentatus, Polyergus sp., Prenolepis imparis, Pseudomyrmex apache, Solenopsis molesta (s.l.), Stenamma diecki, S. snellingi, S. cf. diecki, and Tapinoma sessile. The ant species form a substantial subset of the mainland California ant fauna. "We found only two ant species that are not native to North America, C ectopia and L. humile. Ward Department of Entomology & Nematology University of California, Davis, CA 95616 [email protected] This list of ants from the UC Davis Arboretum, Yolo County, California (approximately 38º33´N 121º45 ´W) is based on observations made over a thirty-year period between 1985 and 2015. During this time there has been a steady decline in populations of native ants and an increasing dominance by the introduced Argentine ant, Linepithema humile. When this water-requiring species invades an area it is well known to eliminate most species of native ants (Ward, 1987; Holway, 1995; Suarez et al., 2001).
