Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England. -

Commenters questioned the documentation presented from FamilySearch, but Memorantia Albion was able to find an example of Rummey in Journals of the House of Lords, Volume 10 (1647) found on Google Books at https://books.google.fi/books?id=5iQzAQAAMAAJ. There is a pattern in 16th century English names ending in ey also being written as simply ending in y; from Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources we find Audry/Audrey, Jeffry/Jeffrey, and Humphry/Humphrey. Given the precedent of 16th and early 17th century English surnames being used as given names, we are happy to register this given name with the submitter’s preferred spelling of Rummy. -

Abstract It is generally agreed that some numbers such as three and nine which appear frequently in the two Eddas hold special significances in Norse mythology. Furthermore, numbers appearing in sagas not only denote factual quantity, but also stand for specific symbolic meanings. This tradition of number symbolism could be traced to Pythagorean thought and to St. Augustine‟s writings. But the result in Old Norse literature is its own system influenced both by Nordic beliefs and Christianity. This double influence complicates the intertextuality in the light of which the symbolic meanings of numbers should be interpreted. -

In the Old English period any Christian influence on a poem would perforce be of a patristic and typological nature. I propose to give evidence that this statement applies also to 13Eio'!llJ..J,=:(, and to bring this information to bear particularly on the inter pretation of the two dominant symbols r Reorot and the dragon's hoardo To date, no attempt has been made to look at the poem as a whole in a purely typological perspectivec. According to the typological exegesis of Scripture, the realities of the Old Testament prefigure those of the new dis~ pensation. The Hebrew prophets and also the New Testament apostles consciously made reference to "types" or II figures II , but it was left for the Fathers of the Church to develop typology as a science. They did so to prove to such h.eretics as the lYIani~ chean8 that both Testaments form a unity, and to convince the J"ews that the Old was fulfilled in the New. -

Primary sources will be studied (in English translation) to provide an understanding of how this knowledge has been preserved and the inherent biases of such material. We will read introductory excerpts from non-Germanic sources including Tacitus and Ibn Fadlan. The major focus of the course, however, will be on medieval Scandinavian sources such as Saxo Grammaticus, Snorri Sturluson, the Icelandic Poetic Edda, and several Icelandic sagas. Examples drawn from archeological artifacts, art works, and movies will also be discussed. Course Objectives 1. To discuss the original sources that preserve knowledge of Norse mythology. 2. This dissertation presents the results of research into how agricultural strategies were modified during the spread of agriculture into Southwest China. By incorporating advances from the fields of plant biology and ecological niche modeling into archaeological research, this dissertation addresses how humans adapted their agricultural strategies or invented appropriate technologies to deal with the challenges presented by the myriad of ecological niches in southwest China. -

Hermann Ptilsson Aspects of Norse Place Nallles in the Western Isles I St. Gregory the Great (d. 604) has long been recognized as an outstanding literary interpreter, particularly by those who acknowledge the principle of polysemy or multiplicity of meaning. In a striking passage (quoted here from memory) he suggests that the words of Holy Writ could be compared to square stones; since it is impossible to observe all the sides of such a stone simultaneously, we must turn it over in order to see each of its facets. The same applies, he argues, to the words of the Bible: individual expressions have several meanings and functions, which we cannot properly grasp without observing them from different viewpoints. The learned pope is here, of course, concerned with the 'literal', 'allegorical', 'moral' and 'anagogic' meanings which were supposed to be a special quality of the Bible, but in recent decades the basic principles involved have become fashionable in certain critical circles dealing with secular literature as well (Frye 1957, 72 and elsewhere). Like the multi-faceted or polysemous words of the Bible, Norse place names in the Western Isles have several aspects to them, and it seems desirable that no facet should be omitted from consideration. It is proposed to use St. Gregory's exegetical principle as an intellectual framework for the purpose of organizing a systematic and comprehensive programme for the investigation of those names. When I allude to the three-dimensional Gregorian model in this context, I have in mind that each facet of our notional stone represents a particular area of research, and that once we have satisfactorily dealt with all six aspects of a particular name, the investigation of it has been completed. -

The story of a poor Icelander who travels to the old country to gain wealth and recognition is well known and has been translated to many languages. It has been considered as one of most classical examples of the Old-Norse short narratives, so-called þættir. The number of short narratives called today þættir varies depending on the criteria applied. As Elizabeth Ashman Rowe and Joseph Harris concluded in A Companion to Old-Norse Icelandic Literature and Culture: Because such short narratives are not always clearly labelled, whether with ‘þáttr’ or another term, and because other criteria for their recognition can be subjective, their exact number will always be a matter of controversy. We feel, however, that a conservative esti- mate would recognize between 75 and 100 short narratives as þættir.1 The research on this kind of narratives has a long history but is not yet exhaus- tive.2 The modern lexical defi nition of a þáttr points out the two modern meanings of the term: Þáttr m., (eig. “Taustrang, Kardeel”, Pl.
