Over the past 75 years, there have only been a few magazine articles on the gigantic Douglas XB-19 bomber, usually showing it in photos dwarfi ng the aircraft around it. Since the XB-19 project was top secret and there was only one example, there is litt le information remaining for researchers. William Wolf presents this enigmatic bomber, a “Flying Laboratory” that was the precursor to America’s fi rst intercontinental bomber, the Continental B-36 Peacemaker. Wolf has used original Douglas and Army Air Force documents and very rare (as few were needed for one bomber) Erection & Maintenance Manuals in this history, which also includes never-seen-before photos and color profi les. Th is volume is a must for the aviation historian, enthusiast, and modeler. • Fascist Italy's Aerial Defenses in the Second World War
Fascist Italy's Aerial Defenses in the Second World War CLAUDIA BALDOLI ABSTRACT This article focuses on Fascist Italy's active air defenses during the Second World War. It analyzes a number of crucial factors: mass production of anti- aircraft weapons and fighters; detection of enemy aircraft by deploying radar; coordination between the Air Ministry and the other ministries involved, as well as between the Air Force and the other armed services. The relationship between the government and industrialists, as well as that between the regime and its German ally, are also crucial elements of the story. The article argues that the history of Italian air defenses reflected many of the failures of the Fascist regime itself. Mussolini's strategy forced Italy to assume military responsibilities and economic commitments which it could not hope to meet. Moreover, industrial self-interest and inter-service rivalry combined to inhibit even more the efforts of the regime to protect its population, maintain adequate armaments output, and compete in technical terms with the Allies. KEYWORDS air defenses; Air Ministry; anti-aircraft weapons; bombing; Fascist Italy; Germany; radar; Second World War ____________________________ Introduction The political and ideological role of Italian air power worked as a metaphor for the regime as a whole, as recent historiography has shown. The champions of aviation, including fighter pilots who pursued and shot down enemy planes, represented the anthropological revolution at the heart of the totalitarian experiment.1 As the Fascist regime had practiced terrorist bombing on the civilian populations of Ethiopian and Spanish towns and villages before the Second World War, the Italian political and military leadership, press, and industrialists were all aware of the potential role of air 1.

The meeting was between Anna-Patricia Kahn, who is the director of CLAIRbyKahn, and Catherine and André Hug, who are the renowned owners of their eponymous gallery in Paris. And the enchantment took place the instant Catherine and André were shown the Erich Hartmann oeuvre. Then and there, they decided to give a "carte blanche" for a Hartmann show to CLAIRbyKahn, the gallery which represents the photographer’s archives. Hartmann (b. 1922 in Munich, d. 1999 in New York) is celebrated for the subtle, mysterious poetry that emanates from his photography, the play of shadow and light that is captivating yet respectful. He embraced places, objects, and people with his camera, never unsettling the moment, always capturing it in a way that allowed it to be rediscovered. The Poetry of Daily Life exhibition features 27 images by Hartmann that magnify the glory of the ordinary and the dignity of the routine. The photographs on display are all vintage prints that have the unique quality of being developed by Hartmann’s own hand. This will be a momentous year for the Erich Hartmann archives as there will also be two major museum exhibitions consecrated to the legendary photographer: in Bale, Switzerland from February to July 2019 as part of a collective exhibition Isrealities; and then in November 2019, his Irish portfolio will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin.

  • Arado Ar 234 "Blitz" in Soviet Service Armstrong Whitworth "Albemarle" In
This production list is presented to you by the editorial team of "Soviet Transports" - current to the beginning of January 2021. Additions and corrections are welcome at [email protected] Arado Ar 234 "Blitz" in Soviet service Soviet troops captured one example of the world's first jet bomber in northern Germany in spring 1945 (Russian sources state that it was found at Pütnitz in March, but Pütnitz was occupied by the Red Army only on 2 May). The aircraft underwent short trials at Rechlin in early 1946, but suffered from repeated engine problems. As the Soviet specialists involved in the trials were not impressed by the "Blitz" they refrained from sending it to the Soviet Union. It is probable that further Ar 234s (especially of the Ar 234C-3 version) fell into Soviet hands when the Red Army captured the Arado factory at Alt-Lönnewitz (Brandenburg) on 24 April 1945. One Russian source states that one Ar 234B and one Ar 234C were despatched to the Soviet Union where they underwent comprehensive study - in particular, one of the aircraft was thoroughly examined by BNT, the Bureau of New Technology. One of the captured Ar 234s was restored to airworthy condition in 1946 and used by the LII for testing brake parachutes. 140355 no code Ar 234B-2 Soviet Air Force f/f 30nov44 previously opb KG 76 of the German Air Force; in dark green/brown purple camo c/s with light grey undersides, the last letter of the unit code may have been an 'F'; captured by Soviet troops in damaged condition (after a forced landing) reportedly at Pütnitz mar45, but
