Over the past 75 years, there have only been a few magazine articles on the gigantic Douglas XB-19 bomber, usually showing it in photos dwarfi ng the aircraft around it. Since the XB-19 project was top secret and there was only one example, there is litt le information remaining for researchers. William Wolf presents this enigmatic bomber, a “Flying Laboratory” that was the precursor to America’s fi rst intercontinental bomber, the Continental B-36 Peacemaker. Wolf has used original Douglas and Army Air Force documents and very rare (as few were needed for one bomber) Erection & Maintenance Manuals in this history, which also includes never-seen-before photos and color profi les. Th is volume is a must for the aviation historian, enthusiast, and modeler. William Wolf is a retired dentist whose consuming 45-year passion is WWII air combat and aircraft , having over 25,000 books and magazines, 1,000s of downloaded CDs, and three miles of microfi lm on WWII in his library. Th is book showcases a comprehensive catalog of restored WWII color Kodachrome slides. Many were taken during the heat of batt le by individuals trying their hand at capturing moments of wartime service with litt le or no previous photographic experience. Th ese images age with time, and vast numbers were stored in conditions not always conducive to long-term preservation. Th e restoration and preservation of these images is vital so that future generations can not only experience the paradox of beauty in wartime, but get a vibrant feeling and sense of the 8th AF’s involvement in the confl ict with clarity, as the photographers intended. Nathan Howland is a graphic designer that has worked closely with aviation museum archives, fi ghter and bomber group associations, along with various photographic collections around the world, to restore and help document vintage aviation images for future generations. Larson, USAF (Ret) • Traces the Cold War defense of North America • First history of the unit that protected SAC’s facilities at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota • Unit chronology and historical and present-day photos During the height of the Cold War, the United States started to develop and expand its air defense capabilities to knock down Russian Air Force nuclear-armed bombers fl ying over the North Pole, across Canada, and into the northern United States to att ack US military targets and major cities. Th e Air Defense Command created air command centers, radar stations, ground observer corps, and fi ghter-interceptor squadrons. Th e 54th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (54th FIS), based at Ellswortjh AFB, South Dakota, protected the Strategic Air Command’s assets at Ellsworth AFB (nuclear alert bombers and tankers and intercontinental ballistic missiles). From 1951 to 1960, the men of the 54th FIS protected North America from possible air att ack by long-range Russian Air Force bombers. Th e threat was deemed real at the time, only later shown to be less serious as the CIA overfl ew the Soviet Union with high-fl ying Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance aircraft . Lt. Col. George A. Larson graduated from Iowa State University and commissioned in the United States Air force in May 1969, retiring in 1992. He has writt en three books with Schiff er Publishing.
