wine philosophy In selecting wines to serve at Lahaina Grill, our focus is on the expression of varietal and regional integrity and the synergy achieved when matching food and wine. Like the food ingredients that we use, we look for wines that are true to their origin and reflective of their environment. The ultimate celebration of this is in the nuances that each wine highlights - the subtle expression of the grape variety, the terroir, the vintage and the wine maker. sommelier picks In an effort to present unique wines for you to enjoy, our sommelier Richard P. Olson III keeps himself busy traveling several times each year to meet with talented winemakers and growers around the world. This gives him a chance to discuss new and exciting techniques used in the vineyards and wineries. Recent wine trips include Australia, Italy, New Zealand, Santo Tomas, Mexico; Walla Walla and Columbia Valley in Washington State; Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Monterey, Santa Cruz wine regions. t yler wines, “zotovich vineyard” chardonnay, santa rita hills, california 2012 The 2012 Chardonnay Zotovich Family Vineyard comes from beach sand-like soils and has a structured, medium-bodied and layered feel on the palate. Showing plenty of mint, leafy herbs, mineral water and clean stone fruits, it builds nicely in the glass, has vibrant, beautifully defined aromas and flavors and a seamless texture, and long on the finish. They also consulted famed Burgundy winemaker Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. It is a blend from two plots at the Patricia Green Estate in Willamette Valley. This wine is very fresh and lively, delivering gorgeous aromas of fresh spring flowers, crushed rock, preserved plum, cherry cola, mint, raisin, ground coffee and damp forest floor. The mouthfeel is intense with ultra-fine tannins followed by a very long and lovely finish. This is one of the best valued wines I've tasted this year and can hang with some top 1er Cru burgundies. Wine Spectator (92 points) winemaker: Mike Etzel Jr. wineries worked: Chapter 24, Beaux Frères cases produced: 4,200 dakota shy vineyards cabernet sauvignon, napa valley, california 2013 This single vineyard bottling of one hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the spectacular 2013 vintage has classic aromas of dark cherry, black berry and chocolate with background notes of sage and tobacco. Massive and palate coating, with incredible power, texture and richness balanced on a fine thread of bright acidity. Flavors of cocoa, dark berries, vanilla, baking spices and herb with notes of mineral and black olive. Very long, powerful and seductive. This wine is a baby that can be enjoyed now. Steven Tanzer (92 points) winemaker: Tom Garrett wineries worked: Dakota Shy, Detert Family Vineyards, Ravana Family Vineyards, Turley Cellars cases produced: 575 mollydooker, “enchanted path” shiraz, mclaren vale, australia 2012 Initially, the Enchanted Path radiates the varietal Cabernet Sauvignon with nuances of fresh plum, clove and hints of chocolate mint. Only moments later the Shiraz chimes in voicing big red berry fruits, aniseed spice with layers of milk chocolate. Supple tannins and creamy mouthfeel allow the concentrated flavours to be enjoyed on the palate while maintaining beautiful balance and finesse. Don’t be fooled, this is a monster of a wine but one that can be tamed after being opened and shaken. Their focused study of these varietals has led them down many an interesting path at home and abroad. Along the way they’ve established fruitful relationships with growers, winemakers and lovers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Their journey convinced them that the best opportunity to consistently and successfully create the focused, textured, yet graceful wines they could treasure was in the Russian River Valley. They have made a serious and deep commitment to the region, establishing vineyards and a winery devoted to capturing the magical essence of Russian River Valley wines. chardonnay 2013 EnRoute Chardonnay, "Brumaire," is named for the fog that gently envelops the vineyards in the Russian River Valley, creating the perfect climate to nurture the fruit to ideal ripeness. A discrete group of select clones and growing areas combine to produce this wonderful chardonnay. The Wente clone benefits from the warmth of the northernmost vineyard along Westside Road and contributes an oily texture and tropical notes. The Rued clone, grown in the cool climate of Green Valley, brings beautiful perfume and floral notes to the wine. The Heritage clone provides notes of pear and citrus from a vineyard cultivated in the Goldridge sandy loam along Vine Hill Road in Sebastopol. pinot noir 2013 EnRoute Pinot Noir, “Les Pommiers” Pinot Noir draws its name from the apple orchards emblematic of the Russian River Valley’s agricultural history. At once elegant and intense, Les Pommiers is the consummate blend of fruit from their vineyards located primarily in the Green Valley and upper middle reach areas of the Russian River Valley AVA. The grapes are farmed according to organic principles and minimally handled at the winery. The wine is deftly shaped with a subtle combination of new and once- used French oak barrels. Les Pommiers captures aromatics of wild raspberry, black cherry, plum and floral notes that yield to mineral, spice and toasty oak. It has a juicy, coating entry, followed by more layers of raspberry and cherry fruit, and ripe, integrated tannins. vintages subject to change page 3 coravin system We have recently added a unique system to our wines by the glass program at Lahaina Grill. The Coravin System will change the way you enjoy fine wine. You now have the freedom to access any wine, any time, in any quantity you desire without ever pulling the cork, and you can go back to your favorites again and again, weeks or months later. Inventor Greg Lambrecht’s dream was to magically pour wine from bottles without ever pulling the cork. The remaining wine could then go back into his cellar, so that he could enjoy it again, whenever he desired. What followed was a decade of development and testing until he had a system that delivered great glasses of wine, indistinguishable from untouched bottles, while never pulling the cork. The cork stays in place and keeps oxygen out, allowing wine to evolve naturally. When the needle is removed, the cork reseals itself. The remaining wine never comes in to contact with oxygen, and continues to evolve naturally. I learned about this system while traveling in Italy over the summer. It gave me the opportunity to try unbelievable wines like Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Gaja, Solaia, and Masseto without breaking the bank! I thought it was an amazing opportunity for Lahaina Grill to offer special wines to our guests by the glass. château rieussec, premier cru, 90% sémillon, 8% sauvignon, 2% muscadelle sauternes, bordeaux, france 2005 Chateau Rieussec has a storied history, beginning several centuries ago with the Carmelite monks. The same order that gave its name to Les Carmes Haut-Brion owned Chateau Rieussec. Today it belongs to Domaines de Baron de Rothschild. Beautiful intense golden color. A pleasantly fresh bouquet, with jammy candied fruits, apricots and figs. This delicious wine is round and smooth on the palate, with candied notes and a long saturating finish. Robert Parker (96 points) marcassin estate , chardonnay three sisters vineyard, sonoma coast, california 2009 The 2009 Chardonnay Three Sisters comes from volcanic and sedimentary, fragmented soils. It exhibits the classic Old Wente clone nose of white peaches, damp stones, hints of apricot and brioche, and caramelized citrus. Medium to full-bodied and pure with underlying minerality and a nice layered mouthfeel, it should drink well for a decade. The visionary husband and wife team of John Wetlaufer and Helen Turley have created a largely unprecedented legacy of extraordinary quality that is unsurpassed by anyone else in Northern California. Robert Parker (94 points) tenuta san guido, “sassicaia”, 85% cabernet sauvignon, 15% cabernet franc bolgheri, tuscany, italy 2009 Sassicaia means “the place of many stones,” and refers to the region’s gravel soil. Intense, concentrated and deep ruby-red, this wine offers complex aromas of red and black fruits, with spice and wild herb notes. In the mouth, the rich flavors are dense, yet elegant, harmonious and graceful, with sweet but firm tannins. With a long finish, this wine’s depth and structure will ensure an extraordinary evolution in bottle.
