Anlässlich des 40. Jahrestages der legendären Verkostung (siehe unten) in Paris, als Stag’s Leap SLV die großen Namen aus Frankreich auf die Plätze verwies, legten britische Weinkritiker um den Master of Wine Richard Bampfield das Thema nochmals neu auf. Es wurde wieder blind verkostet: Bordeaux: 2001 Haut-Brion, 2001 Montrose, 2001 Mouton-Rothschild, 2001 Léoville-Las-Cases Kalifornien: 2005 Ridge Vineyards, Monte Bello, 2005 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars - SLV, 2001 Clos du Val, 2005 Heitz Wine Cellars - Martha's Vineyard, 2002 Mount Veeder - Mayacamas Vineyards, 2001 Freemark Abbey. Das Ergebnis? Platz 1 bei den Rotweinen : 2005 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars – SLV Vor Haut Brion, Mouton oder Las Cases (siehe unten). Natürlich sollten Sie die Möglichkeit haben, einen solchen Kalifornier, der sich in einer Blindprobe vor die 1er Cru Classé schiebt, auch zu erwerben. Es gibt weltweit nur noch vereinzelt Flaschen. Aber Dank meinem Besuch 2011 auf dem Weingut und dem ausgezeichneten Kontakt seit jener Zeit, konnte ich mir die letzten 180 Flaschen des Weinguts sichern, die das Weingut bereit war, an mich abzugeben. Nur noch einige Kisten für spätere Proben wurden zurückbehalten. Mittlerweile hat Stag’s Leap Anfragen aus aller Welt wegen dem 2005er. Aber keinen Wein mehr. Den hat sich der Grimm mal wieder für seine Kunden gesichert. Import läuft. Allerdings hat Stag’s Leap einen Mindestpreis im Internet verlangt. -

2013/2014 VINTAGES Dear Friend, Fifteen years ago, my father purchased a small organic farm on the extreme Sonoma Coast and embarked on his journey to grow world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Upon Helen Turley’s declaration that this area was destined to be “the La Tâche of California”, he and David Abreu planted thirty acres with a diverse and thoughtful selection of clones and rootstocks. Set at high-density intervals, the vines burrow deeply and produce concentrated berries. Today, we are reaping the benefits of their vision and hard work, with mature vines that produce a vibrant spectrum of single vineyard fruit. The full expression of the site can be best enjoyed in our estate vineyard blends, the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Chardonnay and the 2014 Wayfarer Vineyard Pinot Noir. This vintage is open and generous right out of the bottle, possessing soft tannins, great acidity and a distinctive minerality. Each year we set aside small amounts of Pinot Noir from those clones which display exceptional character and balance, and bottle them as four stand-alone cuvees: “Mother Rock” shows a deep, earthy flintiness and velvety texture; “Golden Mean” is aromatic and bold with a bright acidity; “Paige’s Ridge” is rich and ripe, most true to a California-style; and “The Traveler” is ethereal and provocative, the most Burgundian in style. For the next five years, we recommend that you decant these wines for at least an hour before serving. Our sincere thanks for your eager support of Wayfarer. Its opulent, brooding purple hue is accentuated with aromas of ripe black and purple fruit, black pepper and subtle hints of toast. The palate displays a seamless integration of intense flavors that include chocolate, toffee and blackberry. The wine has a rich yet powerful mouthfeel marked by focused, silky tannins and a long, lingering finish. Expect this Cabernet Sauvignon to age gracefully for an additional 5-10 years. HARVEST After a somewhat frenetic growing season marked by dry periods, heavy rains, cold spikes and heat waves, harvest began on August 20th with Pinot Noir for our highly-limited Rosé program and ended with the harvesting of our final Cabernet Sauvignon lots on October 6th. The skies opened up on Oct 13th, dumping more than three inches of rain in the valley in fewer than 24 hours, damaging much of the fruit remaining on the vines. Fortunately for us, all of our fruit was harvested before the rains. -

David Ramey interview Elin McCoy | June 9, 2018 | Magazine: July 2018 Issue With an early career influenced by some of the most respected names in the world of French wine, this classically minded innovator went on to become one of the key figures in wine in California. Elin McCoy meets the Ramey Cellars founder... David Ramey and his wife Carla ‘Okay, we’re an American success story,’ David Ramey admits with a satisfied smile as I look at the line-up of 27 bottles on a table at Ramey Cellars in Healdsburg. Most are current releases. ‘Our winery is like a chef-owned restaurant,’ he explains. The wines are signature dishes; he’s ‘the chef of the cellar’. At 6’ 1”, white-haired and casually dressed, Ramey could easily be mistaken for a laid-back Western rancher – but he is one of California’s most accomplished winemakers, known especially for his lush-textured Chardonnays. Over the past 40 years, he’s built the reputation of half a dozen famous wineries, achieved his artistic vision at his own Ramey Cellars, and now, at 67, still has the enthusiasm to embark on new projects. But there’s more. As a pioneer of traditional winemaking techniques and champion of the idea of terroir, he heavily influenced the direction of California wine as both he and the industry were coming into their own. Like so many winemakers of his generation, Ramey didn’t grow up with wine. He attended the University of California Santa Cruz, where he hated science and was no good at calculus, so studied American literature instead.
