This small beetle has become a major pest on ash (Fraxinus spp.) where it has been introduced in USA, Canada, and European Russia. The pest feeds on several species of ash, including the species found in Norway, Fraxinus excelsior, also known as common ash or European ash. Ash trees are eventually killed by the feeding damage between the bark and the wood. Since the first North American record in 2002, A. planipennis has spread to 23 states in USA and two provinces of Canada. At the epicenter of its introduction in Michigan, the mortality of ash exceeds 99 %. In European Russia, this pest was first detected in Moscow during 2002-2003. Following yearly range expansions and killing of ash trees, A. planipennis has now been recorded 466 km from its European epicenter. The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (VKM) has been asked by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) to assess the probability of: a) entry of A. planipennis into Norway through different pathways; b) establishment of A. planipennis in Norway; c) the further spread and potential damage of A. planipennis on ash trees in Norway. In addition, an evaluation of the effectiveness of the risk-reduction measures described by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) and the European Union (EU) has been requested. VKM considers the probability of entry of A. planipennis by natural spread low, mainly because of the geographical distance and sea barriers between Norway and the infested areas. Among the human-assisted pathways of entry, via commodities containing ash wood, the probability of entry is considered to be: moderate for wood chips, wood in the rough and plants for planting; low-to-moderate for fuel wood; and low for waste wood and wood sawn or chipped lengthwise. In the Republic of Moldova, the ash tree is a common forest species, used in the reforestation and afforestation of woods and territories, and widely used as an ornamental tree in cities and along roads. For more than ten years, our ash tree woods have been severely defoliated by the ash weevil Stereonychusfraxini (De Geer, 1775) from Curculionidae family. In the vegetation period of 2018 and 2019, defoliation was seen on ash trees, caused by unknown sawfly larvae species from the Tenthredinidae family. The analyses showed that these pests belong to the Hymenoptera order – the privet sawfly – Macrophya punctumalbum (Linnaeus, 1767), and Tomostethus nigritus (Fabricius, 1804), the last one being a new species for the fauna of the Republic of Moldova. The biggest ash defoliations caused by the Tomostethus nigritus larvae were recorded in the centre of the country, especially in the Nisporeni and Tighina Forest Enterprises and in the “Plaiul Fagului” Scientific Reserve, as well as in the urban space. Mai bine de zece ani, pădurile de frasin sunt defoliate anual de către trombarul frunzelor de frasin Stereonychus fraxini (De Geer, 1775) din familia Curculionidae.

Abstract Common alder (Alnus glutinosa) is an important tree species, especially in riparian and wet habitats. Alder is very common across Ireland and Northern Ireland, and provides a wide range of ecosystem services. Surveys along the river Lagan in Belfast, Northern Ireland led to the detection of several diseased Alnus trees. As it is known that Alnus suffers from a Phytophthora induced decline, this research set out to identify the presence and scale of the risk to Alnus health from Phytophthora and other closely related oomycetes. Sampling and a combination of morphological and molecular testing of symptomatic plant material and river baits identified the presence of several Phytophthora species, including Phytophthora lacustris. A survey of the tree vegetation along an 8.5 km stretch of the river revealed that of the 166 Alnus trees counted, 28 were severely defoliated/diseased and 9 were dead.

These insects can cause impressive economic and ecological damage in the invaded environment. Thus, several countries use traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles at ports of entry and surrounding natural areas to intercept incoming exotic species soon after their arrival and thereby reduce the likelihood of their establishment. In this study, we investigated the performance of eight trap colors in attracting jewel beetles and bark and ambrosia beetles to test if the trap colors currently used in survey programs worldwide are the most efficient for trapping these potential forest pests. In addition, we tested whether trap colors can be exploited to minimize inadvertent removal of their natural enemies.

Glavni cilj specijalističkog rada je objediniti sve objavljene i neobjavljene podatke o nalazima vrsta kukaca na ova četiri močvarna staništa te kvalitativno usporediti entomofau nu pomoću Sörensonovog indexa faunističke sličnosti. Na području Parka prirode Kopački rit utvrđeno je ukupno 866 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 84 porodice i 513 rodova. Na području Parka prirode Lonjsko polje utvrđeno je 513 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 24 porodice i 89 rodova. Na području delte rijeke Neretve utvrđeno je ukupno 348 vrsta kukaca razvrstanih u 89 porodica i 227 rodova. Za područje Crne Mlake nije bilo dostupne literature o nalazima kukaca. Velika vrijednost Sörensonovog indexa od 80,85% ukazuje na veliku faunističku sličnost između faune obada Kopačkoga rita i Lonjskoga polja. Najmanja sličnost u fauni obada utvrđena je između močvarnih staništa Lonjskog polja i delte rijeke Neretve, a iznosi 41,37%.

However, this paper reported a new mechanism of the wasp to parasitize the host borer Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Observation on their parasitic behavior and their offspring growth discovered that the wasp needs 6 steps to complete its parasitic process, i.e. host-biting and-fighting, host-subduing and-nursing, host-liquefying and-feeding, wasps’ berried and oviposition, larval sucking and developing, cocooning and wasps’ emerging. Host-biting and host-liquefying are the key steps which would evolve an amazing array of mechanisms to create a liquid nutrient reservoir inside the borer body cavity for the parasitoid larvae’s sucking and developing. This mechanism suggests that S.guani is a species of ectoparasitoid 13 wasp, with the characteristic of extra-oral digestion; the nature of subduing is to fully liquefy the borer internal material and help their offspring smoothly sucking the liquid nutrient from the host for development. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species.
