SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF SPRINGTIME PRESCRIBED FIRES ON ADULT POPULATIONS OF SOIL-EMERGING WEEVILS IN CENTRAL APPALACHIAN HARDWOOD STANDS David P. McGann, David W. McGill, Thomas M. The relattonshrp between fire and acorn werrJils IS unknom, but acorn weevils are significant contributors to regeneraon problems in some oak stands and may be vuineraMe to fire at certain life stages. As part of a broader tnvest~gationof ftre use as a silvicuitural tool, we examined presctibed fire impacts on acorn weevils (genera: Cumuiio and Conotractieius)that inhibit oak (Quemus spp.! regeneration by lam! consumption of embryonic or newly dropped acorns. We prescribe burned two stands on the Fernow Experimental Forest in north-central West Virginia: One was burned April, 2002, and the other Aprii, 2003. We placed soil emergence traps under oak and other tree species on five plots within each burn treatment and four adjacent unburned plots. Arthropod samples were collected April to October in 2003 and 2004. We collected 233 weevils representing 11 species from 9 genera. CuwIio and Cyrtepistomus species predominated; Gono~chelusspecies were notable. Our preliminary data indicates that acorn weevil emergence may not be reduced following a stngle spring fire. Herein, we describe the pattern and intensity of acorn weevil emergence during the first 2 years of our study. -

Based on collections assembled by Dutch expeditions to the Northwest African region, including the offshore islands in the neighbouring Atlantic, a taxonomic monograph of sponges of the genus Mycale is presented. Additional material from the region borrowed from the Zoologisk Museum of the Univer- sity of Copenhagen and incidental samples made by individual collectors were also included. The com- bined collections contained sixteen species, nine of which are new to science: Mycale (Aegogropila) syrin gosimilis spec. nov., Mycale (Aegogropila) tenerifensis spec. nov., Mycale (Arenochalina) africamucosa spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) atropha spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) guineensis spec. nov., Mycale (Naviculina) cruzi spec. nov., Mycale (Paresperella) janvermeuleni spec. nov., Mycale (Rhaphidotheca) verdensis spec. nov. and Mycale (Zygomycale) sierraleonensis spec. nov. We briefly reviewed six Mycale species known from the region, but not represented in our material, making the faunal diversity twenty-two species. We present a key to all species of Northwest Africa and the neighbouring offshore Atlantic islands. -

By the time you receive this the recording season should be under way and hopefully those cold and miserable winter days will be but a mere memory. Also underway will be the Invertebrate challenge programme of training days, a three year project funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund and The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which will be running around 100 events in total concentrating on the identification of some of Shropshire’s most under-recorded and under-studied invertebrates. It will also enable Shropshire Entomology to continue for the next three years, as well as enable my involvement with the SEDN as manager of the invertebrate database. Many thanks once more to everyone who has contributed to this edition. It can only function as a ‘newsletter’ if people contribute articles of news and views, so please do consider submitting articles that relate to entomology in Shropshire or entomology in general. Received: 9 October 2020; Accepted: 28 October 2020; Published: 30 October 2020 Simple Summary: Several wood-associated insects are inadvertently introduced every year within wood-packaging materials used in international trade. These insects can cause impressive economic and ecological damage in the invaded environment. Thus, several countries use traps baited with pheromones and plant volatiles at ports of entry and surrounding natural areas to intercept incoming exotic species soon after their arrival and thereby reduce the likelihood of their establishment. In this study, we investigated the performance of eight trap colors in attracting jewel beetles and bark and ambrosia beetles to test if the trap colors currently used in survey programs worldwide are the most efficient for trapping these potential forest pests. In addition, we tested whether trap colors can be exploited to minimize inadvertent removal of their natural enemies. -
