SAINT ANDREW THE APOSTLE PARISH

Prayer to Saint Andrew the Apostle

O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were the first to recognize and follow the Lamb of God. With your friend Saint John, you remained with for that day, for your entire life, and now throughout eternity. As you led your brother to Christ and many others after Him, draw us also to Him. Teach us to lead others to Christ solely out of love for Him and dedication in His service. Help us to learn the lesson of the cross and to carry our daily crosses without complaint so that they may carry us to Jesus. Amen.

Thirty - three years after the dark cloud of communism had settled over Eastern Europe, on a crisp autumn night, heavy bells across Poland began to sway and toll in their high towers. Their clangs peeled down the valleys, thundered through the town squares, and reverberated off every city street. Men and women spilled like water into the streets. Songs, Candles, Prayers, Flowers, Tears, Flags, Embraces, and Champagne. Could it be true? A son of Poland had been elected ! The impossible had become possible! In the town of Wadowice, Fr. Edward Zacher late at night, slowly opened up the sacramental register of the parish, he leafed through the yellowed pages back to May 1920. Caro- lus Joseph Wojtyla. Father Zacher had taught him catechism as a boy. The register duly noted, in Latin, Karol’s dates of Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, Priestly and Episcopal Ordination, and Consecration as Cardinal. In a margin at the bottom of the page, the old priest’s hand trembled as he made a new entry: Die 16 X 1978 in Summum Pontificem electus et sibi nomen Ioannem Paulum II imposuit.”

This Thursday we honor this amazing Saint in our daily liturgy. As the Pope - John Paul II made this universal ministry an enduring part of every pope’s profile. He said Mass on the Altar of the world, where humanity itself was his congrega- tion. He had the piety of a humble Mexican peasant and the sophistication of an erudite German Professor No one, and no type was a stranger to him. An assassin’s bullet almost killed him on May 13, 1981, but he survived, barely. The physical effects of his injuries, and other illnesses. Laid bare his sufferings for all to see. On the night of April 2, 2005, this giant, this father to the world, this Moses to the Slavs, died as tens of thousands gathered in prayerful vigil outside his window in Saint Peter’s Square. His funeral Mass was timeless and supernatural in a manner felt by all, but difficult to capture in words. He was canonized in 2014 and is buried in a side nave of Saint Peter’s Basilica.

Saint Pope John Paul II, you laid your superabundant gifts on God’s altar as a teen, and God used them to the fullest extent until your death. Help all Christians to put their talents at God’s service to help lead others to Christ and His Church.

Excerpt II from Bishop David Zubik’s Letter to Faithful Regarding Election

Over the course of the past thirteen years since becoming your Bishop, during each one of the presidential election years I have written to you about who we are as Catholics. I have provided opportunities for you to be informed so as to have a well-informed conscience. Once again, and in an effort to help you make a good "conscience" decision about the 2020 elections, we as a diocese have posted political guidelines and resources on our diocesan website (https://diopitt.org/ catholic-voter-guide). On that website, you will find a video with a message from myself, guidelines for political activity at parishes and schools in our diocese and a variety of parish resources on voting and on civility. These guidelines and resources are intended to help you vote with a view to the principles that reflect us as the Church, the Body of Christ.

As we are all being bombarded with messages regarding the elections, I want to point out that the only guidelines approved by the diocese are located on the diocesan website. You will note that information speaks to the issues and not for or against any of the political contenders. Not all material from other organizations delivered to your mailbox, left under the windshield wiper of your car, sent as text messages or in your email inbox claiming to be Catholic reflects the fullness of Catholic teaching. Some of these may distort and misstate Catholic teaching or advocate for the election of one candidate over another. I have already received many angry complaints from our priests and parishioners that such materials are being distributed. I want to remind everyone that it is diocesan policy that no political materials may be distributed at or posted on church or parish property. In addition, read and reflect upon the document "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship" (2020 Edition) prepared by us bishops to help you as you pre- pare to vote.

You should also be aware that I am reminding and encouraging our priests and deacons not to speak for or against any candidate, particularly from the pulpit. In a separate letter to them I have written: "While it is not for the Church to endorse specific candidates or political parties, it is part of our role as ordained clergy to carry out the teaching mission of the Church, which involves educating people about issues relating to Church teaching and the importance of voting with an informed and well-formed conscience." As we face the next weeks preparing to vote, I thank you for taking into consideration the thoughts that I have shared with you in this letter. Please vote! Please vote with an informed conscience! Please vote with the whole truth in mind. And finally, this election season will most surely continue to heat up. When things seem especially confusing or overwhelming, as we make conscientious decisions about voting, you and I must continue to love each other despite our differences. As we approach this election, if we do not act with love toward each other, then we will all have lost. Grateful for our continued efforts together in being On Mission/or The Church Alive!, and for our belief that "Nothing is Impossible with God," I am

+David A Zubik Bishop of Pittsburgh 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 18, 2020 Fundraising Highlights Thanks to some star volunteers and leaders within our Parish, St. Andrew the Apostle has been able to turn up the heat on fundraising as we step into fall. We modified our lenten fish fry to happen again on 9/25 and 10/2 as a drive by event and it was a huge success. The majority of our orders were preordered and prepaid, and the team learned a lot about accepting payments through Venmo and we began processing credit card payments for the first time.

All in, these two Fridays' food sales totaled $12,350.

Adding to that, our new fundraising coordinator, Michele Vidnjvich was on site both days and offered chances to win a wide variety of cash and prizes, some of which carried over to our virtual audience via Facebook. Michele's efforts for those 2 days yielded $2,790 for the church.

Donations have always been a staple of the fish fry and this year, parishioners donated $1,655. This combined with the food sales and fundraisers, our two day total haul was $16,795. The team at St. Andew the Apostle wants to recognize Ron Pergola and the Fish Fry Committee along with all of the volunteers that made this event possible. For the record, this group, under Ron's direction, have raised a total of $56,139 (when adding in the monies raised during Lent before the shut down). This is very impressive and much needed for our Parish.

St. Andrew the Apostle would also like to recognize Colleen Bullock and team for hosting a donut sale on 10/3. They were delicious, and brought in $1,763 for the church. We are in need of volunteers if we want to offer the World Famous Donuts in the Future! Please call the rectory if you can help once a month!! And let's not forget Germaine Sickels and Patty Forsyth's Apple Dumpling Sale (10/15-10/17) which has already garnered hundreds of preorders.

As we continue to face the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic, please take a moment to review the steps taken by St. Andrew the Apostle Parish.

These are the protocols mandated by the CDC, Commonwealth of PA, and the Diocese of Pittsburgh: All individuals who enter the Church for any reason (such as private prayer, the Celebrations of Mass or Confession), MUST WEAR A MASK, covering their nose and mouth. Masks are available at all entrances. All are asked to PLEASE USE HAND SANITIZER upon entering the church building. All are asked to be attentive to the seating restrictions, sitting at least 6 feet from anyone else in the pew, the exception being that you can sit in closer proximity to the people you came with (i.e. spouses, family members, etc.). We are allowed to seat 50% of our seating capacity. Be attentive to those pews taped off.

Additional steps we are facilitating here at St. Andrew the Apostle: We have instituted Pandemic Porters, who help the parish ensure Safety Compliance and Accountability. All clergy have been wearing masks to distribute Communion. While you may exit the church by any door, you will find that each church will only have ONE set of doors opened: Charleroi - please use the main doors with the handicap ramp. Monongahela - please use the side door with the handicap ramp. Donora - please use the front door of the Church. To assist in the safety of everyone in the congregation, if you choose to receive Holy Communion on the tongue, please wait until everyone in the Congregation has received Communion. Afterward, you may come to the priest or deacon so that he may sanitize properly. Finally, we are still providing an Online Mass for the Weekend, as noted in the bulletin. Check the parish website at https://saintandrewmidmon.org. PLEASE IF YOU FEEL SICK, WE ASK THAT YOU STAY AT HOME.

PARISH EVENTS

Did you know that you will find two flags inside every ?

The origin of the display of the American flag in many parishes in the United States appears have its origins in the offering of prayers for those who served during the Second World War (1941-1945). At that time, many bishops and pastors provided a book of remembrance near the American flag, requesting prayers for loved ones – especially those serving their country in the armed forces – as a way of keeping before the attention of the faithful the needs of military families. This practice has since been confirmed in many places during the Korean, Viet Nam and Iraqi conflicts.

The flag of interchangeably, as the flag of the .[was adopted on 7 June 1929, the year Pope Pius XI signed the with Italy, creating a new independent state governed by the Holy See. The Vatican City flag is modeled on the 1808 and flag of the earlier , to which a and keys were later added.

Most recent Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish in Charleroi also received a new American Flag to be used outside the Church. We are grateful for Herman Bigi who donated the Flag and Bob Whiten who put the Flag on the Pole outside the Church.

Family Connection

Payment of taxes is unlikely to be a disputed issue in your family. Yet families can still learn something from this Gospel reading. Jesus’ answer to the Herodians and Pharisees redirects their question to focus on the issue of greatest importance: loving and honoring God. Taking this perspective can help us make good judgments about the competing issues of importance in our lives.

As your family gathers, make a list of the activities that your family spends time doing together, such as household tasks, jobs, academics, and recreational activities. Talk about the importance of each of these activities. Ask what would happen if there were an imbalance in our attention to these activities and we spent too much time on one activity at the expense of another. In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds us of the necessity of giving things their proper importance. Read Matthew 22:15-21. The Herodians and Pharisees were giving too much importance to the issue of the payment of taxes. Jesus reminds them that loving and honoring God is of greater importance. In family life we do many important things, but we remember that God is of the greatest importance in our lives. Pray together that your family will learn to keep things in proper perspective, remembering to keep God first in your lives. Pray together today’s psalm, Psalm 96. ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE
