  • Takiguchi Shuzo and Miyawaki Aiko Ca.1960 Mainly Exhibiting from Andre Scheerle’ S Collections
TEL : +81 (0) 75-417-4041 E-mail : [email protected] URL : www.artozasa.com Takiguchi Shuzo and Miyawaki Aiko ca.1960 Mainly Exhibiting from Andre Scheerle’ s Collections AIko Miyawaki Work 8 1958-59 AOO is pleased to present an exhibition “Takiguchi Shuzo and Miyawaki Aiko ca.1960” . Takiguchi Shuzo (1903-1979), a well-known poet and art critic, was interacted with varieties of artists before and after the war. Based on surrealism, he developed vigorous review activities as the mental and theoretical pillar of avant-garde art movement in Japan, and continued to stimulate a lot of contemporary artist through applying to “Yomiuri Independent Exhibition” (1951) and “Jikken Kobo (experimental workshop)” (1951) and planning exhibitions at the Takemiya Gallery (1951~). After 1960, however, he doubted the possibility of critical works on the newspapers or magazines, and consequently, he quitted all of those works at 1963. Seeking for his own expression style, he held the first solo exhibition at the Nantenshi Gallery (1960) with sketches, decalcomanias and burnt drawings which are today being more appreciated as his original expressions. Miyawaki Aiko(1921-2014) was an artist who was in rapport with Takiguchi Shuzo. In 1953, Kamiya Nobuko, Aiko’ s sister in law, introduced Aiko to Abe Nobuya and Saito Yoshishige who would later become her masters. After her first solo exhibition at the Yoseido Gallery (1958), according to Shuzo’ s recommendation Aiko moved to Milan Italy, where she started artistic activities in earnest, interacting with many artists as Lucio Fontana, Enrico Castellani, Piero Manzoni, and Man Ray. In January 1962, she temporarily went back to Japan and held a solo exhibition at Tokyo Gallery.

"WHELPLEY CARL ZIGROSSER The Guggenheim International Exhibitions had their origin in 1956. While all previous shows of this series presented surveys of painting, the subject of the cur- rent selection is sculpture. The hopes for the Exhibitions have been from the outset that they would be signifi- cant in the field of art and also would be an important manifestation of international good will. The methods and rules for the Guggenheim Internationals have been modified over the years as we have sought constantly to find a formula that would achieve these objectives as nearly as possible. In the current show, there are two major departures: one is the abandonment of a rigid system of national quotas; the other is the substitution of purchase awards for the originally established prize structure.

  • Reappraising the Visionary Work of Arata Isozaki
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Portsmouth University Research Portal (Pure) ACCEPTED FINAL ARTICLE ON ARATA ISOZAKI 10 May 2017 5,700 words Overlooked but not forgotten: Reappraising the visionary work of Arata Isozaki by Steffen Lehmann Summary This article analyses the work and presents a portrait of Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. His designs and buildings span over six decades and it is suggested that these can be categorised into four distinctively different phases. As a former collaborator of Isozaki during the 1990s, the author is able to draw from first-hand observations and knowledge to explain relevant projects. As the discussion points out, in its absorption of a multitude of influences and interdisciplinary approach, Isozaki’s work is highly unusual, original, complex and personal, so that one could say he has created ideas and concepts for spaces that defy characterisation as any single school of thought. Key words Japanese architecture; Arata Isozaki; museums and libraries; Post-war Tokyo; Post- modernism; Kenzo Tange; Metabolism; Hans Hollein; James Stirling; composition in urban design; artistic influences. Introduction With a very productive career that spanned over six decades, with over 100 built works, and a heterogeneous oeuvre that is unusually diverse and original, writing about the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki (born 1931 in Oita, South Japan) can be a real challenge. However, now 86 years old and globally admired, Isozaki’s work is due a timely reappraisal, as it has recently been overlooked, for instance, by the Pritzker Prize jury. In 1990 that I left the office of Jim Stirling, where I worked in London, to move to Japan and work as a young architect for Arata Isozaki in Tokyo.

Its formidable range and depth amply reflects Ms. Brunhammer's distinction as one of the leading scholars in the world in these areas. Focusing above all on Art Nouveau, on Art Déco, and on Modern design from the interwar period to the start of the twenty-first century, it covers all aspects of the decorative arts, including furniture, glass, ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, textiles, rugs, and related crafts; as well as fashion and costume design, the graphic arts, including posters and advertising design; and the design of the built environment, including architecture and architectural design, interior design, industrial design and product design. • Reappraising the Visionary Work of Arata Isozaki: Six Decades and Four Phases
Article Reappraising the Visionary Work of Arata Isozaki: Six Decades and Four Phases Steffen Lehmann Cluster for Sustainable Cities, Faculty of Creative & Cultural Industries, University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth PO1 2UP, UK; [email protected] Academic Editor: Marco Sosa Received: 20 May 2017; Accepted: 29 June 2017; Published: 7 July 2017 Abstract: This article analyses the work and presents a portrait of Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. His designs and buildings span six decades and it is suggested that these can be categorised into four distinctively different phases. As a former collaborator of Isozaki during the 1990s, the author is able to draw from first-hand observations and knowledge to explain relevant projects. As the discussion points out, Isozaki’s work is highly unusual, original, complex and personal in its absorption of a multitude of influences and its interdisciplinary approach; thus, one could say that he has created ideas and concepts for spaces that defy characterisation as belonging to any single school of thought. Keywords: Japanese architecture; Arata Isozaki; museums and libraries; post-war Tokyo; Post-modernism; Kenzo Tange; Metabolism; composition in urban design; artistic influences 1. Introduction With a very productive career that spanned over six decades, over 100 built works and a heterogeneous oeuvre that is unusually diverse and original, writing about the Japanese architect Arata Isozaki (born 1931 in Oita, South Japan) can be a real challenge. However, now 86 years old and globally admired, Isozaki’s work is due a timely reappraisal, particularly as it has recently been overlooked, for instance, by the Pritzker Prize jury.
