The Desire to Feed or the Desire to Be Fed?: The Entangled Relation Between Bloom and the Maternal ♣ Figure in Ulysses Tsung-huei Huang National Taiwan University Abstract The question as to whether Leopold Bloom, for all his gentleness and generosity, tends to have a biased conception of “woman” is a controversial one. Instead of charging Bloom with politically incorrect gender assumptions, this paper will argue that Bloom does not see all women through a distortional speculum. Woman’s role as a mother, for one thing, is far from being the target of Bloom’s disparagement. What significance does Bloom envisage in the maternal figure that prompts him to exempt the mother from the category of the threatening other? Seeking to penetrate into Bloom’s complicated relation with the maternal figure, this paper first sketches how Bloom shows his sympathy to- wards women whenever they are thought of as caretakers or murderers. I proceed to argue that his eagerness to identify with the mother can hardly escape our attention if we track Bloom’s desire to feed. Reading Bloom’s desire to feed from a psychoanalytic pers- pective, I demonstrate how this desire is entangled with womb envy and how Bloom’s own fantasy of becoming a mother can help him handle the trauma of losing his son. Further, I contend that Bloom’s identification with the mother is vindicated by his desire to be fed as well. The desire reveals Bloom’s underlying wish to be impregnated by the mother and thereby become a mother himself. -

Recent feminist work has challenged canonical claims about the role of women and has developed new methods of analysis and critique, and in doing so has reinvigorated central areas of philosophy. Loren, Scott Abstract: Though the films of David Cronenberg might not always be concerned with gender froma social constructivist or performative perspective, I think one readily agrees with Linda Ruth Williams’ claim that “for Cronenberg, anatomy is anything but destiny”3. For decades, his characteristic mutations of gendered bodies have repeatedly accompanied the destabilization of fixed notions about gender. It seems that the most fixed notion of gender to be found in his work is that gender is mutable. Likethe physical boarders to bodies in his films, gender is repeatedly undone, constantly shifting, threatening to become something else. For Cronenberg, a perpetual undoing and rearticulation of gender raises the question of when a man becomes a man in a rather unconventional manner. His films initially encourage us to ask other questions, like: “When does a man become a walking, speaking anus?” (Naked Lunch); “when does a man become an insect?” (The Fly); “when does a man become a machine?” (Videodrome, The Fly, Crash, eXistenZ). Of course one would also have to ask: “When does a man become a woman?” (Crimes of the Future, M. Butterfly) “When is a man completely unable to enter manhood?” (Spider) “When is a man a monster?” and “Is a man ever ‘simply’ a man?” (most of his films). It seems that with the release of each new film, one must rearticulate inquiries into the staging of gender in Cronenberg’s work, which is precisely what I wish to do here. -

Ifwe rethink the problem of a specificity of women's cinema and aesthetic forms in this manner, in terms of address- who is making films for whom, who is looking and speaking, how, where, and to whom--then what has been seen as a rift, a division, an ideological split within feminist film culture between theory and practice, or between formalism and activism, may appear to be the very strength, the drive and productive heterogeneity of feminism. 1 It's difficult to believe that after over 30 years of feminist theory "breaking the glass ceiling" is still a term often heard from women professionals. Still, while women continue to make up a trifling percentage of CEOs in Fortune 500 companies, and are continually paid 72% of the wages of their male counterparts,2 small advances continue to be made by women in both these areas? Yet, one profession that stands out as persistently keeping women on the outside looking in is mainstream filmmaking, especially directing. -

Ecofeminist Ethics for Sustainable Urban Public Space Rucha Newalkar, Iowa State University, United States Andrea Wheeler, Iowa State University, United States The IAFOR International Conference on the City 2017 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract Throughout history, the public urban space has reflected the city’s social, economic, cultural and environmental well-being. In the broader discussion of urban environmental sustainability, however, there has been a pronounced dualism and an implicit hierarchy of value while looking at the city-ecology paradigm. This corresponds to political-social, human- nature and subject-object divisions within the western philosophy. General conversations on the sustainability of urban public spaces have predominantly used urban policies, planning theories and architectural engineering approaches to privilege quantitative aspects like morphology and energy, over qualitative aspects like experience, well-being, and equity; thus, giving greater value to the former. But in challenging such dualities, this paper adopts a critical and eco-feminist perspective, to philosophically investigate planning theories related to urban public spaces and to build a holistic definition of urban environmental sustainability for open public spaces. The methodology adopted uses contemporary feminist philosophy to critically investigate eco-feminist discussions of sexuate difference and ethics of care, in the context of design for environmental and sociopolitical sustainability within urban public spaces. In this paper, firstly, we discuss the ethic of sexuate difference while establishing that addressing sexuate difference through design can create a new way we occupy, experience, explore and perceive the urban public space. Secondly, we elaborate on the ethics of care to imply that ‘caring’ as a core value can create equitable spatial and community experience as well as address the micropolitics of human-nature relationship more amicably. -

Enif Robert Despite the obvious misogyny ("il disprezzo della donna") ingrained in the agenda of the 1909 Manifesto del futurismo, Enif Robert, as other (albeit few) women writers, not only engaged in a discourse with Futurism, but sought out a space amongst "i poeti che all'umanità lo ritoglieranno."' After some debate on the issue, Marinetti qualified "il disprezzo della donna" as a "contempt" for woman as the icon of decadence, which he attributed to ìhefin-de-siècle writers (specifically Gabriele D'Annunzio). Marinetti and Robert converge in their "contempt" for the unhygienic/decadent positioning of woman as the "femme fatale," the bourgeois wife and the nurturing mother (mammismo). As a result, both Robert and Marinetti glorify virility and aggressiveness. However, the two Futurists' contempt of the un-hygienic diverges in respect to Marinetti 's fear of the engulfment of not only "uomo-torpediniera," but also the "follarisacca" in the "donna-golfo." Robert reacts not to a fear of the "vagina dentata," but to the socially conditioned "debolezza" -

Women of the Future: Gender, Technology, and Cyborgs in Frank Herbert’s Dune Mémoire Carrie Lynn Evans Maîtrise en littératures d’expression anglaise Maître ès arts (M.A.) Québec, Canada © Carrie Lynn Evans, 2016 Résumé Cette thèse défend les mérites d’une lecture cyborgienne de l’œuvre de science- fiction de Frank Herbert, Dune, où la vision particulière des sciences et technologies nous permet d’interpréter plusieurs personnages en tant que réitération Nouvelle Vague du cyborg. Publié en 1965, Dune introduit des personnages féminins atypiques pour cette époque compte tenu de leurs attributs tels qu’une capacité intellectuelle accrue, une imposante puissance de combat et une immunité manifeste contre la faiblesse émotionnelle. Cependant, le roman reste ambivalent en ce qui concerne ces femmes : en dépit de leurs qualités admirables, elles sont d’autre part caractérisées par des stéréotypes régressifs, exposants une sexualité instinctive, qui les confinent tout au mieux aux rôles de mère, maitresse ou épouse. Finalement, dans le roman, elles finissent par jouer le rôle du méchant. Cette caractérisation se rapproche beaucoup de celle du cyborg femelle qui est d’usage courant dans les productions de science fiction pour le grand public des décennies plus récentes. Par conséquent, cette thèse défend qu’une lecture cyborgienne de Dune complète et accroisse une analyse sexospécifique, car cette approche comporte une théorisation essentielle des réactions à l’égard de la technologie qui, selon Evans, sont entretissées dans la réaction patriarcale de ce roman à l’égard des femmes. Bien que ces créatures fictives ne soient pas encore communes à l’époque de la rédaction de Dune, Jessica et certains autres personnages du roman peuvent néanmoins être considérés comme exemples primitifs des cyborgs, parce qu’ils incarnent la science et la technologie de leur culture et qu’ils possèdent d’autres éléments typiques du cyborg. -
