Magical as all Irish things can beBy Joyce M. TenerI discovered Frank Delaney when he began Chapter two of James Joyce's Ulysses where Mr Deasy and Mr Dedalus do battle in the pod cast online at Frank Delaney.com. Since I have read the book about 16 times and been in a discussion group for about five years and read Portrait and Dubliners, read commentaries and listened to tapes and am now slogging along on a Finnegan's Wake online discussion one page per week, still had not cracked the nut I was so surprised and delighted to see Frank, dear Frank, precious Frank actually made heads AND tails of the text. I won't claim it is the only heads and tails. I won't claim to be a master of it yet but I do see some cogent facts about the characters and a lot of esoteric references put there by Joyce for his own purposes...like isn't it all about his own purposes? What I like best about the pod cast is you tune in once a week and if you like you can return all week and listen again. It is audio and you can hear the Irish as well as the language of the book in your EAR. All very nice. That's the podcast. Now about the ebook. Excited I was to hear it had come out and I dusted off my Kindle which I have not used for over a year. It was rough getting that going and connecting with to buy the ebook. I even gave up once. However I got myself together, determined I was what being Irish and related to persecution in the first degree. I have not completed the entire edition but already I SEE Frank is there. Doing a chapter that I have not touched since my prior readings and discusion group. BUT I am enchanted with what I have because I SEE it and I can hold it still in my hand and I can copy off notes to paste in the book (which is tatter and torn and falling apart) rather than marring the margins. Note the spelling of his references. And the Irish is still coming through and it is top notch and magical as all Irish things can be. Thank you Mr Delaney as in Deasy and Dedalus. Ulysses is the Latin name for Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem Odyssey, and the novel sets a number of parallels between the poem and the novel, with structural correspondence between the characters and experiences of Bloom and Odysseus, Molly Bloom and Penelope, and Stephen Dedal and Telemachus, in addition to events and themes in the early 20th century. The novel is very centuries old, and also imitates the styles of different periods of English literature.
