AN EARLY ACCOUNT OF THE~RUSSIAN DISCOVERIES ,IN THE NORTH PACIFIC TRANSLATED AND EDITED By JAMES W. VANSTONE INTRODUCTION Although the remnants of Bering's second expedition returned to Kamchatka during the summer of 1742, it was not until 1758 that the first connected narrative of this and other Russian discoveries in the northern Pacific was made available to readers in western Europe. In that year, George Frederich Muller, Professor of History in the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and member of Bering's expedition iIi Siberia, published an account based on records in the government files at Irkutsk and J akutsk, together with documents collected after his return to Russia. This work, written in German and translated into English (Muller, 1761) and French, is the standard narrative of what Masterson and Brower (1948, pp. 3-4) have referred to as the first chapter in the history of Alaska which ended with the return of Bering's expedition.! In 1774, Jacob Stahlin von Storcksburg, also of the St. Petersburg Academy -of Sciences, published an account of the post-Bering discov eries that was translated into English the same year (Stahlin, 1774). This work contains vague and confused references to the expedition of Lieutenant "Syndo" and a very inaccurate description of Kodiak Island and certain islands in the Aleutian chain.Resale There is nothing in the tex t to suggest that any of the islands were discovered before 1765. This work is accompanied by a map which is equally confused and inaccurate. In 1915, the family relocated to Anchorage, which was then just a tent city thrown up to house workers on the Alaska Railroad. McCutcheon began taking photographs as a young boy, but it wasn’t until he found himself in the small town of Curry, AK, working as a night roundhouse foreman for the railroad that he set out to teach himself the art and science of photography. As a Deputy U.S. Marshall in Valdez in 1940-1941, McCutcheon honed his skills as an evidential photographer; as assistant commissioner in the state’s new Dept. of Labor, McCutcheon documented the cannery industry in Unalaska. From 1942 to 1944, he worked as district manager for the federal Office of Price Administration in Fairbanks, taking photographs of trading stations, communities and residents of northern Alaska; he sent an album of these photos to Washington, D.C., “to show them,” he said, “that things that applied in the South 48 didn’t necessarily apply to Alaska.” 1 1 Emanuel, Richard P. -

Behringer Jr2 1Virginia Institute of Marine Science, The College of William & Mary, Gloucester Point, Virginia 23062, USA 2Department of Biological Sciences, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia 23529, USA ABSTRACT: A pathogenic virus was diagnosed from juvenile Caribbean spiny lobsters Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys. Moribund lobsters had characteristically milky hemolymph that did not clot. Altered hyalinocytes and semigranulocytes, but not granulocytes, were observed with light microscopy. Infected hemocytes had emarginated, condensed chromatin, hypertrophied nuclei and faint eosinophilic Cowdry-type-A inclusions. In some cases, infected cells were observed in soft con- nective tissues. With electron microscopy, unenveloped, nonoccluded, icosahedral virions (182 ± 9 nm SD) were diffusely spread around the inner periphery of the nuclear envelope. Virions also occurred in loose aggregates in the cytoplasm or were free in the hemolymph. Assembly of the nucleocapsid occurred entirely within the nucleus of the infected cells. Within the virogenic stroma, blunt rod-like structures or whorls of electron-dense granular material were apparently associated with viral assembly. The prevalence of overt infections, defined as lethargic animals with milky hemolymph, ranged from 6 to 8% with certain foci reaching prevalences of 37%. The disease was transmissible to uninfected lobsters using inoculations of raw hemolymph from infected animals. Inoculated animals became moribund 5 to 7 d before dying and they began dying after 30 to 80 d post-exposure. -

At the same time, the pictorial record, indigenous oral lore, and archaeological data point to uninter- rupted use of kayaks well into the beginning of the twentieth century. Drawing on the analysis of kayak data from four archaeological sites, this article reconstructs structural details and discusses the history of the St. Lawrence kayak over the last millennium; it also analyzes the values of these data for understanding prehistoric maritime networks of the Bering Sea. A Review Of The Impact Of Diseases On Crab And Lobster Fisheries Jeffrey D. Shields Virginia Institute of Marine Science, The College of William and Mary, Gloucester Point, VA 23062 Abstract Diseases are a natural component of crustacean populations. Background levels of various agents are expected in fished populations, and there is good reason to establish baseline levels of pathogens in exploited fisheries before they become a problem. Such baselines are often difficult to fund or publish; nonetheless, outbreaks are an integral feature of heavily exploited populations. Mortalities or other problems can arise when an outbreak occurs, and all too often the underlying causes of an outbreak are poorly understood. A variety of stressors can lead to outbreaks of disease or contribute to their severity. Pollution, poor water quality, hypoxia, temperature extremes, overexploitation have all been implicated in various outbreaks. This review focuses on epidemic diseases of commercially important crabs and lobsters as well as a few examples of other disease issues in crustaceans that are ecologically important, but not of commercial significance. ABSTRACT This report describes the subsistence use of birds and eggs in the Bering Strait region of Alaska, based on surveys of households and bird hunting experts in fifteen communities. The geographic area covered includes the coastal regions of Norton Sound, the Seward Peninsula, and St Lawrence, Diomede and Kings islands in notthwest Alaska. The report presents information on species harvested, timing of harvests, and numbers of birds and eggs harvested by community. The report also provides general information on subsistence use patterns for -each community, based on interviews with local bird experts. The report represents the first comprehensive description of subsistence bird patterns for communities in the Bering Strait region. Overall, about 1,203 households (52.2 percent) in the Bering Strait region harvested birds during the survey year. -
