González 255 Contributors 263 Conference Program 265 Preface Cartagena de Indias was a spectacular conference location for the forty- eighth Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and facilitated the choice for the conference theme. Because the conference took place in Latin America, and more particularly on the Caribbean coast, I chose a theme that would highlight the land and its people. "Celebrating Culture" placed emphasis on the elements and activities that influence the construction and production of culture, which are readily identified with a particular people or society: the cultural traditions, symbols, spaces, and leisure activities that enrich the quality of life and the physical, social, and moral environments in which the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean live. Paper themes gave a taste not only of Latin American and Caribbean cultural richness, but also of its life-enhancing qualities. Contact with these cultures and their cultural production, tangible or intangible, has enriched our lives—whether it be the music; the dance; the art; the architecture; the performing arts; the stories and language; the festivals and spaces; the beliefs, values, and practices; or the forms of knowledge and skill that give cultures their vitality. Panelists presented on a variety of topics that addressed many of these ele- ments of culture and tradition. Several papers published in this volume focus on individual artists, on art as testimony, and on religious architectural struc- tures. A second group highlights music, dance forms, and traditions including two papers on Colombian music from the Caribbean coastal region. The sec- tion on culture in audio and visual media includes papers with themes such as preserving the spoken word at the Library of Congress, promoting oral tradi- tion in the Mapuche communities of southern Chile, and representing the fam- ily in Argentine radio and television programs. Three papers from colleagues in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as a number of others in the volume, highlight cultural collections in libraries, preserving national cultural heritage and creat- ing spaces for cultural expression in society. The final group focuses on jour- nals and journal indexing practices. Only a selection of papers submitted for publication could be included in this volume due to space limitations of the published proceedings. I have cho- sen to publish the papers I believe to best represent the conference theme. Preface The conference program was a great success and much of that "éxito" must be credited to the individuals who assembled panels, who offered to present papers, and who arranged for and volunteered to serve as session rapporteurs. Art as Testimony: Writing History, Preserving Memory Cecilia Puerto "Art is a mask which unveils reality: It is a conduit through which we can feel—if we're willing to take the chance—as someone else has felt. It's a mask that we wear when we wish truly to understand what it is like to see as another sees." 1 "El arte utiliza la historia para volverla una creación subjetiva, en la cual el artista maneja dos relatos paralelos, el que le aporta la historia y el que el construye con su obra."2 Testimony as genre comprises a range of expressions and forms from the written word (autobiography, biography, reportage) to cinema and the visual arts, including photography, sculpture, and painting. A fundamental character- istic of testimonio (testimony) as considered in this paper is that it bears wit- ness to and records experience lived under extreme conditions—oppression, authoritarian rule, and violence—an act that is rooted in memory and history. Although my interest lies in exploring how Latin American visual artists have confronted and expressed these realities, I begin by briefly referring to other styles of testimonial expression as a backdrop for that discussion.
