15.1 Origins

Kewley/Kinley appears to be derived from the Gaelic MacFhinonnlogha or Mac Fhionniaoigh, son of fair Lugh or son of fair hero. A possible distinct derivation for Kinley is from the Gaelic Mac Cinfaolaidh, son of Cinfaoladh, wolf head.

MacKewley is known in 1511, Kyuley in 1607 and the modern Kewley by 1611.

15.4.1 There is a possible baptism of a daughter on the 2nd of March, 1679. No name is given in the IGI, one of several such baptisms. The parish records should be consulted.

15.4.2 William Kewley (707) was born in 1681. He married Mary … (708), probably in 1698/9 at Braddan, although this has not yet been confirmed. There was at least one daughter, Dorothy (683), of the marriage and possibly two other childen, Jane and Robert. William died in 1721. See 15.5 for details of his descendants.

15.5.2 Dorothy Kewley (683), was baptized on the 15th of January, 1701 at Malew. She married Hugh Killey (682) on the 27th of April, 1723 at Malew. She was buried on the 13th February,1782 at Malew. See Volume I, 12.3 for details of her decendants.

15.5.3 Robert Kewley, a possible son of William, was baptized on the 31st of May, 1702. No further details are available.

15.5.4 Isabel Kewley (1372) was baptized on the 30th of October, 1704, at Malew.

15.7.1 Esther Kewley (1282) was baptized on the 8th of April, 1667, at Braddan. She married Thomas Gelling (see Volume I, 10.3.1) circa 1790. Her Will indicates that she died on the 6th of February,1694-5, though the transcript of the Braddan Burial Register indicates that she was buried on the 6th of January. See Volum I, 10.4 for details of her descendants.

15.7.2 John Kewley was born circa 1669. He was mentioned in the Will of his sister Esther.

15.7.3 Avrick Kewley was born circa 1672. She was mentioned in the Will of her sister Esther.

15.11 John Kewley—1760

15.11.1 John Kewley (1214) was born circa 1760. He has not been positivly identified as yet.

15.11.1.1 Alice Stowell (1213) was baptized on the 21st of December, 1768, at Onchan, the daughter of Philip Stowell (1212), born circa 1740.

15.12.1 William Kewley (430) the illegitimate son of John Kewley and Alice Stowell. William married Eleanor Waterson (see Volume I, 15.4.7) on the 8th of August, 1818, at Kirk Braddan. He died in Douglas on the 16th of April, 1871, when his age was given as seventy-two years, though at the census a few days earlier his age was given as seventy-three. See 15.13 for details of his descendants.

He was baptized on the 10th of December, 1797, at Lonan, under his mother’s name although his father’s name was also given in the Regiser. The church Presentments of the 9th of February, 1798, also refer.

No details of his early life are available. By the census of 1841 William was living with his family at Ballacubbon, Braddan, where he appears to have been farming. By 1851 the family is still living in Braddan at Kewaigue, but William is now a tailor. In 1861 the family is living at Kewaigue Inn and William if listed as an innkeeper and Eleanor as a labourer. In 1871 William, a widower, is still a publican but now at 67, Athol Street.

15.13.1 Elizabeth Kewley (71) was baptized on the 3rd of December, 1818, at Braddan. At the census of 1841 she was living with her parents.She married Robert Lawson (see 5.15.5) on the 6th of September, 1841, at Braddan. She died in 1847, intestate, and was buried at Onchan on the 30th of August when her age was given as 28 years. Her death was probably due to complications in childbirth as she died eight days after the birth of her son, Robert, who had been buried 4 days before.See 5.16 for details of her descendants.

15.13.2 Ann Kewley (1215) was baptized on the 3rd of December, 1820, at Kirk Braddan. She married Thomas Cain (see 11.20.1) on the 4th of April, 1841, at Kirk Braddan when the witnesses were Elizabeth Kewley (her sister), John Craine and James Corran, the Parish Clerk. In 1871, a widow, she was living at 22, Bigwell Street with three of her unmarried children and a grand–son, Robert, aged 4 years. In 1881 she was an inmate at the General Hospital on census night, at which time she was described as boot and shoe binder. See 11.21 for details of her descendants.

15.13.3 Eleanor Kewley (1216) was baptized on the 12th of January, 1823, at Kirk Braddan. In 1841 she was living with her parents. She married Thomas Duesbury (1224) of Davenham, Cheshire, on the 25th of April, 1848, when the witnesses were William Kewley, Joseph Cannell and Mathew James Backwell. There were at least two children of the marriage, both born in England:–Fanny born in in 1850 and Ellen born in 1855

15.13.4 Jane Kewley (1217) was baptized on the 31stof March, 1826, at Kirk Braddan. In 1841 she was living with her parents. She died in 1870 and was buried on the 26th of May.Her age was given as 43 and her address as Commercial Inn, Athol Street.

15.13.5 Catherine Kewley (1218) was baptized on the 29th of August, 1828, at Kirk Braddan.

15.13.6 William Kewley (1219) was baptized on the 8th of May, 1831, at Kirk Braddan. He died on the 17th of July, 1831.

15.13.7 John Kewley (1220) was baptized on the 22nd of September, 1833, at Kirk Braddan.

15.13.8 Sarah Kewley (1221) was baptized on the 17th of February, 1836, at Kirk Braddan. She married John Carran (1223), a miner, in 1864. Sarah died on the 4th of December, 1867, at Commercial Inn, Athol Street.

15.14 John Kewley—1775

15.14.1 John Kewley (6678) was born circa 1775 (65-9 at 1841 census). He married Catharine Killip on the 25th of April, 1808, at Marown. In 1841 he and his wife were livinga t Bigwell Street, Douglas, at which time he was described as a joiner. A possible burial on the 13th of September, 1850, at Braddan (aged 80) or Marown 1st August 1847 aged 74.

15.14.2 Catherine Killip (6679) would have been born circa 1787 if she was of age at her marriage in 1808. The 1841 census shows a Catharine aged 35-9 living with John & Ann. If this age is correct then Catherine is either a second wife to John or the eldest child, born 1808. If she was a second wife then the marriage would have taken place after 1819 assuming she was of age and at the upper end of the age range given in 1841. No evidence of a second marriage or of an elder child has been found, and certainly no earlier than 1815. For the time being it is assumed that the age is incorrect (though the fiche is quite clear) and probably due to an enumerators copying error for 65. Possible burial at Marown 20th August, 1848, aged 67.

15.15.1 Eleanor Kewley (6680) was baptized on the 28th of January, 1810, at Marown. This may be a late baptism, see Elizabeth.

15.15.2 Elizabeth Kewley (6681) was baptized on the 11th of February, 1810, at Marown. The IGI indicates an extraction but the parents’s name are given as “J. Kewley” and “Killip”.

15.15.3 John Kewley (6682) was baptized onthe 23rd of August, 1812, at Marown.

15.15.4 Margaret Kewley (6683) was baptized on the 2nd of January,1814, at Marown.

15.15.5 Catherine Jane Kewley (6684) was baptized on the 2nd of June, 1816, at Marown.

15.17.1 John Kewley (1648) was born in 1812 at Douglas. He did not survive infancey and was buried at Braddan on the 2nd of December, 1812.

15.17.2 James Kewley (1649) was baptized on the 24th of March, 1816, at Douglas. He married Elizabeth Kelly on the 12th of September, 1842, at Braddan.

In 1841 he was possibly living with his brothers Henry and John in Shaws Brow. At the 1851 census he was living at 7, Factory Lane with his wife Elizabeth and children James aged six, Elizabeth aged 5 (bp: 30th August, 1846, St. Barnabas) and Catherine aged 3. James was a stone mason. The family can not be identified in the 1861 census.

15.17.2.1 Elizabeth Kelly (1659) was born in 1821 at Douglas (her age was given as 29 at the 1851 census). She married James Kewley on the 12th of September, 1842, at Braddan.

15.17.3 Ann Kewley (1650) was baptized on the 4th of January, 1818, at Douglas. She died before 1833. No further details available.

15.17.4 John Kewley (1651) was baptized on the 5th of January, 1820, at St. Matthew, Douglas. He did not survive childhood and was buried at St. George, Douglas, on the 30th of November, 1821.

15.17.5 Elizabeth Kewley (1652) was baptized on the 18th of October, 1822, at St. Matthew, Douglas. She has not been positively identified in the 1841 census but may have been a servant to John Oates, miller, at Ballacreech, Onchan. She married William Callister on the 11th of February,1844 at Braddan. In 1851 she was living at 6, Bigwell Street with her family, Catherine aged 15, John aged 8, Elizabeth aged 5 and William aged 3. Given the age of Catherine, this is possibly a second marriage for William, Catherine being a daughter of the first marriage (? and John). Elizabeth’s widowed mother and younger brother, John, were also living at the same address.

15.17.5.1 William Callister (1660) was born circa 1815. He married, probably for the second time, Elizabeth Kewley on the 11th of February, 1844 at Braddan. A tailor, he was living with his family at 6, Bigwell Street, Douglas, in 1851.

15.17.6 William Kewley (1653) was baptized on the 29th of June, 1823, at St. George, Douglas. In 1841 he appears to be lodging with John & Elizabeth Kelly in Duke Street. In 1851 he was possibly lodging with Henry & Ann Kelly in Back Strand Street when he was described as an unmarried labourer.

15.17.7 Henry Kewley (1654) was baptized on the 13th of August, 1827, at St. Matthew, Douglas. In 1841 he was possibly living in Shaws Brow with his brothers James and John.

15.17.8 John Kewley (1655) was baptized on the 4th of April, 1829, at St. Matthew, Douglas. In 1841 possibly living in Shaws Brow with his brothers James and Henry. In 1851 he was living with his widowed mother at 6, Bigwell Street, Douglas, when he was employed as a Roper. No other members of the family are mentioned, though his married sister, Elizabeth, was living at the same address with her family, see 15.17.5 above.

15.17.9 George Kewley (1656) was baptized on the 11th of May, 1830, at Braddan.

15.17.10 George Kewley (1657) was baptized on the 28th of December, 1831, at St. Matthew, Douglas. In 1841 he was the eldest child at home with his parents in Bigwell Street.

15.17.11 Ann Kewley (1658) was baptized on the 4th of September, 1833, at Douglas. In 1841 she was living with her parents in Bigwell Street. Not identified in the 1851 census.

15.18 Philip Kewley—circa 1785

15.18.1 Philip Kewley (7264) was born circa 1785 at Lonan. He married firstly Catherine Cowin circa 1831 at Lonan and secondly Ann Kneal circa 1841 at Lonan. He was buried at Lonan on the 20th of May,1860, when his age was recorded as 65 years.

There may have been an earlier third marriage to Christian Cleator at Lezayre. No marriage records have been found for Philip.

In 1841 he and his three children were living at Baldwin, Lonan. It would apear that his wife had died at this time. Ann Kneale was living with the family as a female servant. Philip was employed as an agricultural labourer. In 1851 the family were living at Crone–e–Chule, Lonan. Ann is now recorded as his wife and he was employed as a labourer in the mines. In 1861 the family were living at 7, Ball–ne–Cregga, Lonan. Ann is a widow.

15.18.2 Catherine Cowin (7265) was born circa 1800. She married Philip Kewley circa 1831 at Lonan. She died circa 1840 at Lonan.

15.18.3 Ann Kneal (7266) was born circa 1810 at Marown. She married Philip Kewley circa 1841. She was a widow at the time for the 1861 census. She has not been found in the 1871 census.

15.20.1.1 Ellen Chadwick (7273) was born circa 1860 in Wales. She married Thomas Kewley on the 24th of June, 1894, at St. Paul, Ramsey.

15.22.1 Florence Mary Kewley (7279) was born on the 2nd of October, 1894, at Ramsey. She did not survive infancy and was buried on the 10th of August, 1895, at Bride when her age was recorded as 10 months.

15.22.2 Richard Walter Kewley (7280) was born on the 30th of September, 1895, at Ramsey. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 5, Ivy Lane, Ramsey.

15.22.3 Clara Ethel Kewley (7281) was born on the 6th of Sepetember, 1897, at Ramsey.In 1901 she was living with her parents at 5, Ivy Lane, Ramsey.

15.22.4 Margaret Ellen Kewley (7282) was born on the 3rd of December, 1898, at Ramsey. In 1901 she was living with her parents at 5, Ivy Lane, Ramsey.

15.23 John Kewley—1812

15.23.1 John Caesar Kewley (6263) was born circa 1812. He married firstly Ann Kennedy on the 23rd of June, 1833, at Patrick and secondly Eleanor Corrin nee Qune on the

18th of November, 1865, at Onchan. (Walter Quine Kewley of the second marriage, bp 16th October, 1867, at Onchan.)

John was an agricultural labourer. In 1841 the family seem to be living at Ballaspet, Patrick though his name and that of his son John are recored as “Thos”. William’s age is recorded as “3 months” though it was nearer 9 months. In 1851 the family were living at Glenspet, Patrick. By the census of 1861 the family had moved to Onchan. At this time John’s birthplace is given as “Lezayre” and Benjamin’s as “Onchan” though the IGI shows his baptism at Patrick.The 1871 census shows the family living in Onchan Village where John is now farming 10 acres. In 1881 the family is in Malew when John is once again described as an agricultural labourer.

15.23.2 Ann Kennedy (6264) was born circa 1815

15.23.3 Eleanor Quine was born circa 1822 in Onchan. She married firstly John Corrin on the 15th of December, 1836, at Onchan and secondly John Kewley on the 18th of November, 1865, at Onchan. She was buried at Malew on the 27th of December, 1882, when her age was recorded as 59 years.
